The benefits of smiling

in Project HOPE3 years ago

A man goes to a job interview and asks about salary, and is told:

  • Well, you will start by charging $1,000 and later $2,000.
  • Ah, I'll come back later then.

Do you have WiFi?

  • Yes, I do.
  • And what's the key?
  • Having money and paying for it.

What did .gif say to .jpg?

  • Cheer up, man!

If I managed to bring a smile to your face, good for you! If not, I hope you have a lot to smile about during the day!

Now, let's get into the subject. In these days where we have had to learn to live with the daily use of a face mask, perhaps we have thought about how important it is to see a smile on a person's face, and I'm not just saying that because of the photos but because of what is expressed and how much it benefits us.

One of the things that makes me happiest is to hear my son's laughter, he does it with so much strength and so natural that it makes me happy in the moment, it makes my life happy and makes everything change.

Each one of us is responsible for our state of mind, if we are happy or not. As Charles Chaplin says "A day without humor is like a day lost". Every day we will be presented with many situations that we may not be able to control, but we must accept them, and not allow them to prevent us from enjoying other good moments.

We must always look for a way to be in a good mood to smile, because as time goes by this behavior changes. As children we smile an average of 400 times a day and as adults a small percentage of us smile about 20 times a day. If we knew how beneficial it is for our health, social life and self-esteem, perhaps we would focus more on smiling every day.

When the smile is sincere, authentic or genuine, known as a Duchenne smile, the face shows how the cheeks and the ends of the mouth are lifted, the teeth are shown and wrinkles are observed next to the eyes, reflecting honesty and confidence. However, there are people capable of faking a smile, although sometimes it is not very easy, they can use it to lie. That is not the purpose.

What are the benefits of smiling?

First of all, it is very beneficial for your body and brain. When you are happy, your brain sends the information to your muscles and makes a smile appear. However, the opposite also happens, even if you have a fake smile the brain receives that information from the muscles, it picks up that you are smiling and that there is a reason to be happy and starts to change to more optimistic thoughts, which can make you feel more cheerful.

Scientific studies reveal that smiling is a fundamental key to be happier, since it stimulates the brain, releases endorphins, serotonins and other analgesic substances produced by the body. Additionally you get to feel more relaxed, calmer, releasing tension from the body because it reduces the production of hormones such as cortisol, dopamine, causing stress.

When we smile in a natural and sincere way, we feel closer, more pleasant and this allows us to feel more confident. It is typical to arrive at a place and just by seeing someone smiling at you, you immediately feel more comfortable and it makes communication easier. Trust is very important in relationships between family, friends or acquaintances, it allows you to have a greater connection with the other person. It is also common to observe that people who do not smile so easily express their preference to distance themselves and belong to a higher status, bosses often prefer to stay that way in front of their employees.

Smiling is not only beneficial for you, but also for those around you, you may have noticed that when you smile even if it is to an unknown person, most likely you return the same gesture, thus achieving a change in the mood of that person. Studies reveal that if you are happy there is a greater likelihood that the people around you also do so.

Something curious is that it has also been studied that smiling can also help you to be forgiven when you make a mistake. When you lower your gaze with regret, and smile discreetly, you can empathize with others and it serves to obtain forgiveness more quickly.

In some jobs, it can help you earn more money, as in the case of waitresses, people who work in restaurants and others, since smiling can provoke positive emotions in customers and show more confidence. However, in those jobs where they have to do it more frequently such as event entertainers, hostesses can become exhausting as it can cause a contradiction between what you show and what you really feel. In short, when working with the public, keeping a smile on your face can help without going overboard, as it can be very expensive later on.

On the other hand, a relationship has been established between smiling more and living longer, this undoubtedly must be related to the attitude towards things that happen to us in life, it helps us to fight diseases and maintain positive thoughts.

Just like the quote from Charlie Chaplin, what should spice up your day is humour (and joy), otherwise that day is lost. The benefits of smiling is so much. Asides other aspects, it is good for the mental health and the physical health. I have proven this times and again and it is true.

Hi @emimoron! That's right, it's a way to gain trust and maintain good relationships with others. It also helps us to make friends quickly. Greetings!

Smiling keeps us in a positive state, and it has many benefits, in addition to allowing us to feel happier.

A person who smiles has a better chance of achieving success in a business, having a better environment, closing a deal, and surely feeling better physically and spiritually.

In addition, a pleasant image is projected to others and this means a lot.

Certainly smiling makes us feel happier and that helps us to stay healthy both physically and mentally. It allows us to maintain good relationships and that at a business level is important both with employees and customers. Thanks for commenting!
