Working at home and educating children

in Project HOPE3 years ago
In this last year, most of us parents faced the great challenge of educating our children academically at home which made us change our routine completely, since we also have to work from home.

This experience from my perspective has left us with many lessons, and especially has allowed us to share more with our children and contribute even more to their education, since it was previously shared between the school and the one received at home. At the beginning it was perhaps somewhat traumatic, between taking care of the home, the family, the work, the children's education and if we add the concern about the pandemic. However, as time has gone by, I have been able to organize myself better and fulfill our activities. It is true that in some countries they have adopted the measure of sending the children back to school under the biosecurity protocols, however, here at home we continue under the same scheme of distance learning and I think we will continue like this for a while longer.

I have talked to several mothers, and shared experiences in relation to how they have been handling this situation, that has led me to write about some tips that can help to combine working from home and educating children.

In my case, at the beginning of the pandemic we did not have a fixed time to get up, my son and I love to sleep late. However, if I followed that rhythm for too long I would not be able to do all the pending activities and fulfill my responsibilities, so we started to work following these recommendations:

It is very important that the children are aware that the routine is completely different, since the parents will work from home, so they require silence at certain times of the day to concentrate, to convey this information we must use words according to their age to make it easier for them to follow the rules and always remember them.

We can continue, establishing schedules, it is advisable to establish and comply with schedules to be able to structure the activities and avoid delays. It is important to set times to get up, go to bed and rest. This habit should be followed by all members of the family, so that there is no incompatibility between the schedules of children and adults. In the long run, this habit will be very useful for children when they return to their academic and work classes.

At home there are many distracting agents such as the radio, television, among others. For this reason, we must look for an adequate work and study environment. If possible, a room can be set up and be very clear that while working or studying there should be no interruptions. If they need more concentration to do their work, it is advisable to get up early, so that they can do the activities more quietly while the children sleep and increase their performance.

At the end of the activities or between activities can take a break at that time can be made snacks, this allows us to recharge energy, and we concentrate better to continue with the tasks of the day.

We can incorporate the children to participate in household activities, share the obligations, so they will be learning at the same time to be responsible and work to achieve the common good of the family. This is a lot of fun, we can integrate them in the preparation of food, desserts, drying the dishes, washing the yard, or cleaning the garden and maybe they will occupy less time.

Finally, we can do recreational activities on weekends to differentiate them from the rest even though we are still at home as a security measure. We can make crafts, paint, do exercises, play, watch a movie, in short, share as a family, since this is also an essential part of their education.

It should be noted that patience is one of our best allies, the important thing is that we do not get to stress and generate stress in our children, I believe that this is a very particular situation that we have had to live and we must make the most of it.

I hope you find these tips useful, see you next time!

Some really good tips here - thanks for sharing. My "big" kids are quite self sufficient but my biggest problem has been motivation and dealing with what can easily become depression. My daughter never had her prom, graduation or even exams. Years of her life she won't get back but years that didn't meet the expectations she had. It has been difficult to give them something positive to look forwards to. Life needs value and hope.

It has really been a difficult situation for children and young people to cope with and as you rightly say, these are moments that can no longer be lived and cannot be recovered. The hope above all is that we will soon return to our activities freely. Greetings
