Winning The Poke-Lottery!

Making the most of a medical trip to a southern city.

My wife, @arcticgypsy had to make a medical flight south for some minor troubles earlier this month. While down there, she came across a store that sold Pokemon booster packs and decided to buy a few. She purchased 6 Astral Radiance cardboard blisters and two boxes of promo Shining Radiance. After a few more days of anticipation, she returned home and we soon sat down to open up our packs. And boy, did she pick some good ones!

Apparently they send the Charizards to the north!

That's right! Both our Shining Fates booster packs featured a Shiny Charizard Vmax! A PSA 10 of these can go for over $275! And we got two!? What the front door! Even a loose card goes for $90-100 USD! I cannot believe our luck. These aren't our first Charizards, but they are our first pair. This particular Charizard is regarded as one of the strongest pokemon in the entire Sword and Shield era of cards.

We don't record pack openings or take pictures of all the other penny cards, but we do have a few more highlights for you. First up is a Hisuian variant Sneasler V card, with a roughly $1 value. And a Frosmoth Trainer card with a similar value. As is the case with pokemon cards, only the Charizards and cards worthy of being in a deck hold any real value.

Next we have a double holo set, the Galarian Weezing and a Dracovish. The latter of these is worth a whopping $1.45!

And the crowd went mild!

And below we have the two promo holos from the boxed booster sets, A Polteageist and a Galarian Mr. Rime. I'm honestly not even going to bother checking the price of these two cards since they will be as common as the amount of sets sold.

All in all it was just as fun as you would expect opening Pokemon cards to be, if you're into this sort of thing. Nothing gets better than opening a double Charizard set like that, though. I have a feeling we will be hard pressed to match those heights ever again.

That double Char pull is freaking amazing. What are the odds that you'd get those cards from the same shop? Wonderfully lucky!

How much are the booster packs to buy? Are these a new line of cards? I want to buy some now, I know it's unlikely I'll get a charizard, but I want one.

I have a bunch of pokemon cards from the late 90's early 2000's, plus yu-gi-yo cards. Wonder if mine are worth anything, I'll have to root them out.

You should definitely go through your old cards. Most aren't worth much but some are worth thousands. Boosters are $9 up here in Nunavut, not sure what their prices are in the real world.

One of the disappointing things to me about current Pokemon TCG is the breakneck speed at which they release new cards, it makes collecting a whole set nigh on impossible without spending a few thousand in booster boxes in a very short window.

Luckily we want the cards to play the game and will eventually spread the other, less expensive cards to our young family members as they age-into pokemon.
