The Church and The Well of Saint Vincent

in Architecture+Design11 months ago (edited)

Hello archi lovers!

Sometimes you have to change, do something different and this post certainly is different. Again we go around close, through our own city where we can continue to be surprised and discover curious corners. It is never too late to learn more about places we think we know.

We have already visited some of those places, the pleasant and impressive Colon Market: Modernism & Modernity.

And now we are going to a place that at first glance does not attract our attention because in reality we barely know that it exists. We pass almost randomly through a narrow street that does not get sunlight, in that dark street for a moment we look to the right, it seems that there is something, what is it?

We stop, there is a plaque where it says the name of the street, it is already different, unique and special, handmade and made in another time. A simple urban detail that already impresses us. Yes, the street is called "Carrer del Pouet de Sant Vicent" (written in the local dialect of the area and it means: The little well of Saint Vincent Street) and next to the beautiful tile sign we look and see other letters engraved in stone.

Because of the typology at first it is somewhat strange, but we read again here "El Pouet de Sant Vicent" ("El Pocito de San Vicente" in Spanish and "The Little Well of Saint Vincent" in English), the well of who is the patron saint of the city, of the city of Valencia in Spain.

It's funny, could it be possible that I've never been here? What will be inside? Can we visit it? The magic of discovering small charming places.

Charming, because we enter with curiosity, which increases with each step, because it's supposedly a church, but what is all that decoration on the walls? The whole wall is decorated with traditional painted tiles, something original, also with detailed history. A nice work of art that so many of us have ignored for a long time…

There they talk about the life of this saint, before he became one, even about his baptism, and much more, because there are some words that tell a story about water or the lack of it during a cholera epidemic somewhere and thanks to the generosity and benevolence of the people of this place distributed water (by train!) from the well in 1854. What well?

The little well that's still there, covered down there in some kind of cave. There are details of the history that stay with us even though we don't even know they exist, in this case, until now.

And we decided to see everything, also the church, because it is a church at the back, with the holy water font and behind it a closed altar like the one we find in many other churches and a main altar presided over by the statue of the holy apostle Saint Vincent Ferrer.

It is a small, charming and very well decorated church, with a beautiful roof with which we enjoyed looking up, and in which we enjoyed the tranquility, because at that time there was no one...

So we go back to the beginning, to the area of the tiles to look at them up close, all the details, to reflect on the history, on the essential that was that small well at the bottom during a specific and difficult time. And in the benevolence of those who lived there then.

The message of all this has a deep meaning and learning, never stop stopping somewhere that catches your eye, never stop fascinating with beautiful architecture and design, never stop discovering small places with history because you can be surprised even in a small dark street in the city that you thought you knew, there is always more...

The architecture of the buildings is among my biggest passion to admire whenever I travel to foreign countries. Of course, these have their own culture and points of interest but while history and some places might seem familiar, architecture is always unique

Yes me too, love to know about different places and also the history related to those constructions but I realize that we can discover many places when we travel but sometimes it is not necessary also close to us there are hidden surprises. 😉

It's looking historical. Nostalgic

Yes historical and artistic and the same time, a piece of local history, and curious...
Thanks!

these are beautiful, thanks for sharing.

Thanks! yes really a nice discovery!

Thanks a lot! Yes impressive, they took water from there and transported it by train to needed areas. And it's nice to see that living part of the history, the history of something good that people in the city did for other people. Happy you like it! !LUV

Hello @duvinca, what a great post, providing useful details and information for friends who see it.

I am very interested in seeing the tiles with pictures of the historical story. That seems very interesting, using the walls as historical literature that is interesting to read.

Thank you! What a nice comment 😊 I'm very happy you have liked the place and specially those tiles, it's interesting to learn some part of local history on those lovely walls. Happy Weekend!

Greetings @duvinca, what beautiful paintings on the tiles, the internal details of the dome are really impressive, the lines joined to the points create a beautiful design, I loved the circular windows in this area and its beautiful columns, you had a great adventure and "discoveries" by visiting this outstanding church.

Greetings!

Thanks a lot dear @belkyscabrera the tiles are lovely, we should explore more our own places that's true!
Have a great month! Happy Friday 🤗

I couldn't agree more that sometimes we need to embrace change and explore new things. This post truly offers a refreshing perspective. It's amazing how we can continue to be surprised and uncover hidden gems within our own city, even in places we thought we knew well. There's always room to learn and discover more about the places we call home.

Nice words and this is true, sometimes we want to explore and we think we have to travel far away but that's not like this... many times we forget that close to us we can find new places, just explore also other streets and corners, and when you don't expect something like this place can surprise you! 🤗

One of the most fascinating experiences of architecture is definitely a mysterious site that sparks our curiosity, isn't it @duvinca? Saint Vincent's Church and Well was indeed a historical adventure that lured you into discovering more heritage treasures within your home city of Valencia. 👍😊

Apart from the water well hidden inside that cave, what other aspect of architecture (not mentioned in your post) has intrigued you the most and why?

It's been a little impromptu discovery... and I think those moments and sensations there are worth it. Well, one of the most obvious facts that caught my attention is that there was absolutely no one there and everything was open, very quiet, it's a narrow and dark street, everything seems to be hidden, not just the well...
Then without a doubt, the most striking, those very typical and traditional tiles, specifically in the classic houses that were in the orchard around the city, houses called "Valencian barrack" (barraca valenciana). Everything fits, history, art and tradition.
I am happy that can be interesting, I felt good (and surprised) when I realized that I have never been there... even I was walking many times around those streets in downtown. We can live new experiences everywhere and anytime!

Wonderful! It's definitely worthwhile to explore more of our domestic territory because we'll never know what we may find. And those traditional tiles look like an interesting discovery. Other people tend to take them for granted due to their close proximity. However, I'm glad you've unlocked the mentioned architectural jewels and ended up with a satisfying experience. Cheers! 😊

Let's appreciate the beautiful things we have close, hidden gems around us 🤗
Enjoy this day and the weekend my friend!

I love how you took the photos they are stunning.

Thank you! I was impressed there, a nice discovery that deserved some photos! Happy you like them!
Have a nice June!
