The festive atmosphere continues in my city! Despite the rain and a bit strange weather for our latitudes:)
But in the city center lights are burning, tourists are having fun and in this atmosphere you forget about all your problems and troubles. Today I invite you to a tour of the past. After all, my city of Lviv is famous for architectural monuments of different eras, from the Renaissance to the present.

У моєму місті триває святкова атмосфера! Незважаючи на дощ та трохи дивну як для наших широт погоду:) Але у центрі міста горять вогні, веселяться туристи та львів'яни і в цій атмосфері забуваєш про всі свої проблеми і негаразди. Сьогодні я знову запрошую вас на екскурсію у минуле... Адже моє місто Львів славиться пам'ятками архітектури різних епох, від Ренесансу і до сучасності.

I really love this church and the whole surrounding complex. I go there from time to time, because there is a final tram stop nearby, which I use to get from my district to the city center. Not surprisingly, sometimes I am inspired to take a few photos of St. Andrew's Church and the Bernardine Monastery, which will be discussed today.
Я дуже люблю цю церкву і весь навколишній комплекс. Я періодично буваю там, адже поряд знаходиться кінцева зупинка трамваю, яким я приїжджаю з мого району у центр міста. Не дивно, що іноді я маю натхнення зробити кілька фото церкви Андрія і монастиря Бернардинів, про які сьогодні йтиме мова.
Bernardine monks appeared in Lviv in 1460, but first they had a wooden monastery, which burned down twice.
Therefore, in 1600-1630 a stone church and the buildings of the monastery were built. The obligatory condition was the construction around strong walls and ditches, because the complex was located outside the city fortifications.
The architects was the Italians Paul the Roman, Ambrose the Blessed (lower tiers) and the German Andreas Bemer (pediment). The church was painted in the 1740s by the monk Benedict Mazurkiewicz.
Wooden baroque altars were made at the same time by Polish masters from Yaroslav. Heavy metal doors were created by Ukrainian local blacksmiths.
Ченці-бернардини з'явились у Львові у 1460 році, але спочатку у них був дерев'яний монастир, який двічі горів.
Тому у 1600-1630 роках було зведено сучасну кам'яну церкву та корпуси монастиря. Дозвіл на будову давав король польський Сигізмунд І після детального вивчення проекту. І обов'язковою умовою було створення навколо потужних мурів та ровів, адже комплекс знаходився за межами міських укріплень.
Архітектори - відомі у нашому місті люди, італійці Павло Римлянин, Амвросій Прихильний (нижні яруси) і німець Андреас Бемер (фронтон). Храм був розписаний в 1740х ченцем Бенедиктом Мазуркевичем. Дерев'яні барокові вівтарі були зроблені у той же час майстрами з Ярослава. Важкі металеві двері створили українські місцеві ковалі.
In December we had a real winter, with snow lying on the ground and on the branches of trees. One day, quite spontaneously, having decided some business, I went for a walk around the city and found myself in the square near my favorite church...
At first I was attracted by the mystical combination of snow-covered trees and old thick walls of the monastery. All this was beautifully illuminated by yellow lights. It seemed that time was running back!
У грудні в нас була справжня зима, зі снігом, який лежав на землі та на гілках дерев. Одного разу цілком спонтанно, вирішивши якісь справи, я пішла прогулятися містом і опинилась на площі біля улюбленого храму... Спочатку мене привабило містичне поєднання засніжених дерев і старих товстих стін монастиря. Це все красиво освітлювали жовті ліхтарі. Здавалося, що час застиг!
I approached the lighted church and, as always, admired the facade.
The church is built in the form of a basilica with three naves traditional for the Catholic Church.
Its facade consists of three tiers, and the top is decorated with a pediment with various curls. In the niches of the second tier are statues of the Virgin Mary in the middle and the Apostles Peter and Andrew on the sides. There are several more sculptures of monks on the top and on the side facade.
At the entrance to the church is a bas-relief with a knight praying.
Згодом я підійшла до освітленої церкви і, як завжди, милувалась фасадом. Церква побудована у формі трьохнефної базиліки, що є традиційно для католицької церкви. Її фасад складається із трьох ярусів, а зверху прикрашений фронтоном із красивими завитками-волютами. У нішах другого ярусу розміщені статуї Діви Марії всередині і апостолів Петра та Андрія по сторонах. Ще кілька скульптур монахів є зверху на щипці та на бічному фасаді. Біля входу у церкву є барельєф із лицарем, який молиться.
That winter evening I froze a little and decided to go inside the church. It is almost always open to the faithful and to the many tourists who can enjoy the incredible beauty. To be honest, in my opinion this beauty is a little too much here:)
У той зимовий вечір я вже трошки змерзла і вирішила зайти всередину церкви. Там майже завжди відчинено для віруючих, і для численних туристів, які можуть побачити багато неймовірної краси. Якщо чесно, то на мою думку цієї краси тут трохи забагато:)
If the exterior of the monastery and the church are harmonious and cozy, then the interior is too much sculpture and decor. Art critics attribute this church to the styles of the late Renaissance and Mannerism.
In addition to the main altar in the center, there are about 16 side altars with so many sculptures of saints, bishops, Bible heroes and little angels with plump cheeks. Such an army of sculptures!!!
That's why every time I forget that it is a church and I perceive the premises more as a museum! I don't know how people pray here, because I look around and try to guess the plots on the darkened icons.
Якщо ззовні монастир та церква є гармонічними та затишними, то в інтер'єрі трохи забагато скульптур та декору. Мистецтвознавці відносять цю церкву до таких стилів як пізній Ренесанс та маньєризм.
Окрім головного престолу у центрі, тут є ще приблизно 16 бічних престолів із великою кількістю скульптур святих, єпископів, героїв Біблії і маленьких ангелів із пухкими щоками. Саме тому кожного разу я забуваю, що це є церква і сприймаю приміщення швидше як музей! Не знаю як люди тут моляться, адже я, скільки б не приходила сюди, розглядаю все навколо і намагаюсь відгадати сюжети на потемнілих від часу іконах.
The sculptures are made of wood and gilded. It creates a feeling of splendor, solemnity and luxury. The figures of the saints are mostly depicted in very dramatic, sharpened emotional poses, because they were created in the 18th century in the Baroque era.
Here are my favorite characters.
Скульптури зроблені з дерева та позолочені. Це створює відчуття пишності, урочистості та розкоші. Постаті святих переважно зображені у дуже драматичних, загострено-емоційних позах, адже вони були створені в епоху бароко. Ось мої улюблені персонажі.
Apostle Andrew, after whom the church is named. He is considered the founder of Christianity in Ukraine.
Апостол Андрій, на честь якого названа церква. Він вважається засновником християнства в Україні.
In the collage, Eve is on the top right and Adam is on the bottom.
На колажі справа зверху Єва, а внизу Адам.
The icon depicts the Nativity of Jesus, while the sculptural group is the three sages who brought gifts to the newborn Christ.
На іконі зображене Різдво Ісуса, натомість скульптурна група це є три мудреці, що принесли дари новонародженому Христу.
It is an allegory of Justice with scales and a sword and an allegory of Medicine with a snake.
Мої улюблені постаті жінок, які дещо нетрадиційні для церкви. Це є алегорія правосуддя із вагами та мечем і алегорія медицини зі змією. (Частіше змія є негативним персонажем у християнстві).
The vault of the temple is decorated with a fresco, with beautiful lush colors. On the choirs there is an organ, but unfortunately it is now out-of-use. I remember the period when the church was restored, about 17-20 years ago. Then I studied at the College of Music, which was located in one of the buildings of the former monastery.
Центральне склепіння храму прикрашене фрескою, із красивими соковитими кольорами. На хорах традиційно розміщений орган, але на жаль він тепер недіючий.
Я пам'ятаю період, коли церкву реставрували, приблизно 17-20 років тому. Тоді я навчалася у музично-педагогічному коледжі, який був розташований в одному з корпусів монастиря. (Наші заняття з вокалу чи диригування відбувалися у колишніх келіях).
For a long time I looked at the magnificent interior of the church, noticing new details that I had never seen before.
Then the service started and I sat on the bench for a while. It was warm, a little dark and cozy. I am constantly haunted by the thought that these sculptures would be enough for at least 5 temples:)
Я досить довго розглядала пишний інтер'єр церкви, помічаючи нові деталі, яких ще ніколи не бачила. Згодом почалась служба і я ще трохи сиділа на лавці. Було тепло, трошки темно і затишно. Мене постійно переслідує думка, що цих скульптур би вистачило принаймні на 5 храмів:) Але з часом я звикла до манірного маньєризму і заглибилась у власні думки...

Всюди тут дуже затишно і святково. У будинку 19 століття розташована квіткова крамниця.
The last touch in our journey will be a walk in the courtyard of the monastery. It used to be the edge of the city, so the whole complex was securely surrounded by thick walls, the remains of which we can see today.
It's a little scary here in the evening. It used to be possible to get out of here, but now there are repairs. Although there are great angles, but I will show them another time.
Останнім штрихом у нашій подорожі буде прогулянка у подвір'я монастиря. Колись це була межа міста, тому весь комплекс був надійно оточений товстими стінами, залишки яких ми можемо бачити і сьогодні. Ввечері тут трошки страшно. Раніше звідси можна було вийти назовні, а зараз тут ремонт. Хоча там чудові ракурси, але я їх покажу іншим разом.
А це кафе нагадало мені про спільноту Saturdaymemories) Якось туди зайду на каву.
In the distance I saw a light and heard a noise. I knew that there was a restaurant and went to consider the design. This is the "Restaurant of Meat and Justice". The name is a bit strange, especially for a person who does not eat meat... But I tried to abstract from it and enjoyed the beautiful exterior of this institution. Flashlights, swing, snow-covered trees. All the details are quite harmoniously combined with the old walls of the monastery behind. (This part now is the main historical archive of Lviv.)
Вдалині я побачила світло і почула галас. Я знала що там є ресторан і підійшла розглянути оформлення. Це "Ресторан м'яса і справедливості". Назва трошки дивна, особливо для людини, яка не вживає м'яса... Але я старалась абстрагуватися від цього і насолоджувалась гарним екстер'єром цього закладу. Ліхтарики, гойдалка, засніжені дерева. Всі деталі досить гармонійно поєднані зі старими мурами монастиря, які знаходяться позаду. У цій частині здається тепер знаходиться головний історичний архів Львова.
In the end, a funny thing happened to me. I saw an old car with a metal cage attached to it. There was a rustle from there. I thought there was an animal there. I looked in the cabin, and there was a boy aged 8-9. Little tourist;) We were a little scared of each other!

На кінець зі мною сталася смішна річ. Я побачила стару машину із прикріпленою до неї металевою кліткою. Звідти долинав шурхіт. Я подумала, що там тимчасово є якийсь звір... Ну всяке можливе у Львові. Заглянула в кабіну, а там пацан років 8-9. Маленький турист;) Ми трошки злякались один одного!
Ось такий красивий і контрастний наш Львів!
