The Zingg Passage / El Pasaje Zingg

Note that on the sides of the central staircase (made of cement) there are two electric ones (made of wood) which were the main attraction of the Zingg Passage at the time of its inauguration on May 6, 1953 and then they continue to be, until today. Those wooden and escalators were the first escalators put into operation in Venezuela.

Hola comunidad, les saludo con respeto y mucho cariño desde la República Bolivariana de Venezuela. Estoy por aquí para contarles parte de nuestra historia relacionada con la Ingeniería Civil, la Arquitectónica y el Diseño; historia de la innovación que hoy nos hace sentir orgullosos, historia de edificaciones importantes que le dieron paso a la modernidad en Venezuela y que hoy, a pesar de las vicisitudes del tiempo, siguen firmes, mostrando al mundo la excelente calidad de los materiales con el cual fueron hechas y, sobre todo, la dignidad y excelencia profesional de los arquitectos, diseñadores, constructores, financistas y de todos los involucrados en la construcción de esas estructuras que hoy son testigos silenciosos de nuestro pasado glorioso, el de la otrora Venezuela, la República pujante, de calidad, honestidad y excelencia.

I am here to tell you part of our history related to Civil Engineering, Architecture and Design; history of innovation that today makes us proud, history of important buildings that gave way to modernity in Venezuela and that today, despite the vicissitudes of time, remain firm, showing the world the excellent quality of materials with the which were made and, above all, the dignity and professional excellence of the architects, designers, builders, financiers and all those involved in the construction of those structures that today are silent witnesses of our glorious past, that of the once Venezuela, the A thriving republic, of quality, honesty and excellence.

El pasado 06 de mayo se cumplieron 68 años de la apoteósica inauguración del Pasaje Zingg, ese día quise escribir algo al respeto y publicarlo en esta maravillosa comunidad pero decidí no hacerlo, hasta tanto no tuviera la oportunidad de visitar la ciudad capital, Caracas, para tomar algunas fotografías del lugar. Hoy traigo para ustedes esta publicación. Antes de ayer, sábado 15 de mayo, mi esposa y yo fuimos a Caracas, aprovechando la semana flexible. Estando en el lugar pedimos permiso al jefe de seguridad del edificio, Señor Miguel Campos, y procedimos a tomar algunas fotografías que les mostraré mas adelante.

On May 6, it was the 68th anniversary of the apotheosis of the Zingg Passage, that day I wanted to write something about it and publish it in this wonderful community but I decided not to, until I had the opportunity to visit the capital city, Caracas, to take some pictures of the place. Today I bring you this publication. The day before yesterday, Saturday May 15, my wife and I went to Caracas, taking advantage of the flexible week. While at the site, we asked the building's security chief, Mr. Miguel Campos, for permission and proceeded to take some photographs that I will show you later.

Respetados lectores, después de esta breve introducción, comencemos con la historia del icónico edificio y el famoso pasaje. Lo primero que les informaré es el origen del nombre del edificio y posteriormente del Pasaje Zingg. Tanto el nombre del edificio como el del pasaje se debe a su dueño el Señor Gustavo Zingg pero ¿Quién fue Gustavo Zingg? Según la biografía publicada por la Fundación Empresas Polar, fue un Comerciante y empresario alemán que nació en la ciudad de Hamburgo el 19 de agosto de 1878 y falleció en la ciudad de Caracas el 5 de diciembre de 1963. Gustavo Zingg llega a Venezuela en abril de 1899 contratado por la casa comercial de Maracaibo, C.W. Christern & Co., fundada el 16 de enero de 1876. Gustavo Zingg adquiere la nacionalidad venezolana después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y se mantiene hasta su muerte, a la cabeza de sus empresas, especializándose en las industrias de tenería y de calzado.

Dear readers, after this short introduction, let's start with the history of the iconic building and the famous passage. The first thing that I will inform you is the origin of the name of the building and later of the Zingg passage. Both the name of the building and the passage is due to its owner, Mr. Gustavo Zingg but who was Gustavo Zingg? According to the biography published by the Fundación Empresas Polar, he was a German merchant and businessman who was born in the city of Hamburg on August 19, 1878 and died in the city of Caracas on December 5, 1963. Gustavo Zingg arrived in Venezuela in April from 1899 hired by the commercial house of Maracaibo, CW Christern & Co., founded on January 16, 1876. Gustavo Zingg acquired Venezuelan nationality after World War II and remained at the head of his companies until his death, specializing in the tannery and footwear industries.

En 1912, pasa a ser socio del establecimiento comercial donde trabaja, cambiándosele la razón social a la de Christern, Zingg & Co. Para el año de 1914, la firma figura como uno de los principales exportadores de café y cacao del país. En 1925, Gustavo Zingg funda la Cervecería del Zulia, una de las más importantes de Venezuela para la época, compra en 1930 la participación de la familia Christern en la casa comercial de la cual es socio, creando la firma G. Zingg & Co., cuya sede traslada a Caracas en 1932, manteniendo sucursales en Maracaibo y Puerto Cabello, donde instala un negocio de ferretería al por mayor.

In 1912, he became a partner in the commercial establishment where he works, changing his business name to Christern, Zingg & Co. By 1914, the firm was listed as one of the main exporters of coffee and cocoa in the country. In 1925, Gustavo Zingg founded the Zulia Brewery, one of the most important in Venezuela at the time, in 1930 he bought the Christern family's stake in the business house of which he is a partner, creating the firm G. Zingg & Co. , whose headquarters moved to Caracas in 1932, maintaining branches in Maracaibo and Puerto Cabello, where it installed a wholesale hardware store.

¿Qué es el Pasaje Zingg y por qué fue tan importante en la nueva arquitectura urbana de Caracas? El Pasaje Zingg es en realidad una especie de galería comercial ubicada en los niveles inferiores del Edificio Zingg, cerca del centro histórico de Caracas. Este Pasaje fue una gran innovación porque logra unir dos avenidas principales de la ciudad capital, al Norte con la Avenida Universidad y al Sur con la Avenida Este 6, su ubicación exacta corresponde a las siguientes coordenadas (0°30′14″N 66°54′50″O). Este pasaje fue el primer centro comercial que hubo en Caracas y además el primero en tener unas escaleras mecánicas de madera, un atractivo adicional para promover las visitas a los locales comerciales. Sin lugar a dudas, visitar el pasaje Zingg era una experiencia fascinante porque podías pasar del sur al norte y del norte al sur a través de él, especie de túnel que ofrecía una vista moderna al mejor estilo de los pasajes parisinos (muy de moda en Europa en esa época de esplendor, después de la segunda Guerra mundial.) Esta monumental obra, acompañada con otras de importancia, como la construcción de la gran Avenida Bolívar, principal arteria vial de Caracas, fueron de suma importancia porque cambiaron en su totalidad el antiguo urbanismo y su panorama arquitectónico por uno nuevo y moderno al mejor estilo de las grandes ciudades del mundo.

What is the Zingg Passage and why was it so important in the new urban architecture of Caracas? The Zingg Passage is actually a kind of shopping arcade located on the lower levels of the Zingg Building, near the historic center of Caracas. This Passage was a great innovation because it manages to unite two main avenues of the capital city, to the North with Avenida Universidad and to the South with Avenida Este 6, its exact location corresponds to the following coordinates (0 ° 30′14 ″ N 66 ° 54′50 ″ W). This passage was the first shopping center in Caracas and also the first to have wooden escalators, an additional attraction to promote visits to commercial premises. Without a doubt, visit the Zingg passage It was a fascinating experience because you could go from south to north and from north to south through it, a kind of tunnel that offered a modern view in the best style of Parisian passages (very fashionable in Europe at that time of splendor, after World War II.) This monumental work, accompanied by other important works, such as the construction of the great Avenida Bolívar, Caracas' main road artery, were of the utmost importance because they completely changed the old urbanism and its architectural panorama for a new one and modern in the best style of the great cities of the world.

El proyecto concreto presentaba una estructura de estilo parisino con espacio para cuarenta tiendas, que contaba con dos secciones: la primera al norte nivelada con la Avenida Universidad, y la segunda al sur con la Avenida Este 6. El proceso de construcción utilizó el estacionamiento del edificio original, y aprovechó el desnivel de elevación entre las dos avenidas que conectaba para instalar las primeras escaleras mecánicas del país, las cuales tenían un acabado de madera. Así mismo, albergó los primeros baños públicos, a fin de retener más tiempo a los transeúntes

The specific project presented a Parisian-style structure with space for forty stores, which had two sections: the first to the north leveled with Avenida Universidad, and the second to the south with Avenida Este 6. The construction process used the parking lot of the original building, and took advantage of the elevation gap between the two connecting avenues to install the first escalators in the country, which had a wood finish. Likewise, it housed the first public baths, in order to retain passers-by for longer.

Lamentablemente, en la actualidad, el otrora orgullo capitalino, está desolado, prácticamente abandonado, salvo algunos comercios que están resistiendo las vicisitudes del tiempo. El Pasaje aun se ve limpio pero se nota el poco mantenimiento, las escaleras mecánicas que tanto admiraron los caraqueños del ayer, hoy no funcionan, están ahí, detenidas, esperando a un "buen samaritano" que quiera invertir en ellas para recuperarlas. En fin, el Pasaje Zingg está silencioso esperando que la República Bolivariana de Venezuela vuelva a ser la República pujante y próspera que una vez fue. Gracias amigos lectores por llegar hasta aquí, ahora les invito a ver fotografías actuales del Pasaje Zingg.

Unfortunately, at present, the former pride of the capital is desolate, practically abandoned, except for some shops that are resisting the vicissitudes of time. The Passage still looks clean but you can see how little maintenance it is, the escalators that the people of Caracas admired so much yesterday do not work today. They are there, detained, waiting for a "good Samaritan" who wants to invest in them to get them back. In short, the Zingg Passage is silent, waiting for the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to once again be the thriving and prosperous Republic that it once was.     Greetings friend Marcos! The Zingg Passage is one excellent demonstration of smart urban planning and strategic business decisions. It serves as a shortcut that connects 2 main thoroughfares (avenues) by means of a modern tunnel. Hence, instead of people going around the block to reach their destination, they simply pass through this inner corridor to arrive faster. Another lucrative decision was converting that long space into an arcade of commercial establishments to attract customers to shop, dine, etc. Such a clever design endeavor indeed!     Hello friend Erne. Greetings from Venezuela. Yes buddy, this is how you describe it. That was the great strategy of Mr. Gustavo Zingg, an innovation that opened the doors of modernity to Venezuela in the midst of the military dictatorship. The structural concept of the Passage is in turn a great commercial strategy: the corridor that crosses from one avenue to another, the shops, the innovative attraction of the escalator that at that time was a great sensation, the manufacture of the first public toilets to retain people for longer within the passage ... it was a great idea that helped the commerce of the time. Unfortunately today the Passage looks sad but it is still a place to walk through the history it keeps and because it helps to shorten the path. Greetings and thanks for your comment. Esa fue la gran estrategia del Sr. Gustavo Zingg, innovación que le abrió las puertas de la modernidad a Venezuela en plena dictadura militar. El concepto estructural del Pasaje es a su vez una gran estrategia comercial: el corredor que cruza de una avenida a otra, los comercios, el innovador atractivo de la escalera mecánica que en esa época fue una gran sensación, la fabricación de los primeros baños públicos para retener a las personas por mas tiempo dentro del pasaje... fue una idea genial que ayudó al comercio de la época. Lamentablemente hoy el Pasaje se ve triste pero sigue siendo un lugar para caminar por la historia que guarda y porque ayuda a acortar el camino. Saludos y gracias por tu comentario.
