[ESP] En 1876, durante el gobierno de Guzmán Blanco, se decretó la construcción del teatro, cuyo proyecto fue asignado al arquitecto francés Esteban Ricard. En 1877 se paralizó la obra por causas políticas, hasta 1879, cuando se reanudan los trabajos a cargo del ingeniero Jesús Muñoz Tébar. Se inauguró el 10 de enero de 1881 con la obertura de la ópera Hernani de Giuseppe Verdi. En 1900 se cierra por remodelación, en 1930 se realizaron importantes trabajos bajo la dirección del ingeniero Ricardo Razetti. En 1949, el teatro sufrió la mutilación de su cuerpo frontal, desapareció el peristilo semicircular, el vestíbulo original, y la escalera del palco presidencial. En los años siguientes se realizaron otras remodelaciones hasta convertirlo en lo que es hoy.
[ENG] In 1876, during the government of Guzmán Blanco, the construction of the theater was decreed, the project of which was assigned to the French architect Esteban Ricard. In 1877 the work was paralyzed for political reasons, until 1879, when the works by the engineer Jesús Muñoz Tébar were resumed. It was inaugurated on January 10, 1881 with the overture of the opera Hernani by Giuseppe Verdi. In 1900 it was closed due to remodeling, in 1930 important works under the direction of engineer Ricardo Razetti. In 1949, the theater suffered the mutilation of its frontal body, the semicircular peristyle, the original lobby, and the staircase of the presidential box disappeared. Por petición de su esposa, Guzmán Blanco construyó la Basílica de Santa Teresa, en el lugar donde se encontraba la iglesia de San Felipe Neri, la Basílica inaugurada el 27 de octubre de 1876, pero se celebraron las primeras misas el 27 de abril de 1880, todas las imágenes y objetos del culto de la iglesia de San Pablo El Ermitaño, fueron llevados a la Basílica de Santa Teresa.

[ESP] La imagen del Nazareno de San Pablo fue consagrada el 4 de julio de 1674 por Fray González de Acuña. El Presidente Antonio Guzmán Blanco, después de terminada la nueva Iglesia, construida en honor a su esposa, manda a colocar la imagen en la Basílica de Santa Teresa y allí permanece, siendo el centro de veneración de la feligresía católica venezolana.

Realzada por columnas lisas de grandes proporciones con bases independientes, rematadas por capiteles metálicos, que se proyectan dos metros hacia adelante lo que permite crear un pórtico en el cuerpo central, apoyado en un entablamento liso de donde arranca un frente triangular, ornamentado con dentículos y coronado con la imagen de Santa Ana. En la fotografía se observan las torres laterales de los campanarios.
