Hello community, I greet you with great respect from Venezuela. In this publication I will tell you an anecdote that occurred to me in one of the classrooms teaching the Chair History of Art. Being with the students, from one of the second year sections, we began to talk about colonial art in Venezuela and in turn we addressed the issue of types of architecture: civil, military and religious as an important aspect, in terms of construction, of the past centuries. One of the students asked me that if I knew Margarita Island, I replied no, but that I did know part of it because of the number of photographs I had seen, especially through advertising being that the entire New Sparta State is a tourist destination par excellence. The young man told me that his grandparents were Margariteños and that they loved to talk about the tourist attractions that exist on his island, one of which is the oldest religious architecture in Venezuela, it is the Cathedral of Our Lady of The Assumption. Before concluding class I promised the young student that in whatever he had the possibility of traveling to Margarita Island he would visit the Cathedral and all the places that were within my reach to visit. In 2013 I first visited the beautiful Margarita Island, New Sparta State, and kept my promise.

As you can see this construction is simple, without relevant details of religious architecture, as they do exist in other cathedrals of Venezuela and America. Its simplicity dates back to the sixteenth century. The first building dates back to 1571, but was destroyed in an attack by the French on the island in 1602. In 1609 work began on its reconstruction, which was completed in 1621. The Cathedral was inaugurated in 1621, fifty long years of construction by the vicissitudes of the time. In its structure you can see materials typical of the region. The Cathedral has a style very similar to Mudejar Art marked influence of Christian and Muslim art at the same time, a situation that is explained by the number of years that Muslims were in Europe. This fusion is a Hispanic phenomenon seen in many Christian buildings of the 15th and 16th centuries. In its construction predominates the use of materials such as brick, singing, plaster, ceramics, wood, treaded earth... giving it subtle Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance style. At the time my family and I visited the place we were unable to enter the cathedral because it was closed due to poor state of conservation, due to the lack of maintenance by the Venezuelan state and the competent authorities. It is good to clarify that this religious architecture is protected by the legal figure of national historical monument, decreed by the Venezuelan State in Official Gazette No. 26320, of August 6, 1960.

In June 2019, my sister and brother-in-law invited me and my wife to spend a holiday on Margarita Island where her eldest son, my nephew @SoyJulioSorondo. While on the island we went again to visit the Cathedral Our Lady of the Assumption and again we found it closed for the same reason, it was so fragile that the Municipality Arismendi since 2017 had made a series of prohibitions and restrictions to preserve the historical monument:

from Thursday, June 15, there was a ban on touching bugle or driving in motor vehicles on the adjoining Independencia Street, to avoid vibration due to traffic shaking its foundations; prohibition of making public shows near the Cathedral by the high decibels of sound equipment; it is also not permissible to ignite fireworks in their adjacencies, or detonate rockets, or any kind of artifact that could affect the bases of the weakened structure.

In order for you to get an idea of how fragile the Cathedral was, I will share an excerpt from the press article that was published on June 18, 2017, signed by journalist Nilda Silva Franco, the article illustrates the serious situation of the Cathedral in a very particular way, which is presumed that, by its irony-laden denunciation , annoyed the competent authorities:

The Cathedral of The Assumption must be approached almost tiptoeed to mitigate 60 years without background care

Today, February 15, 2021, I called my nephew Julio Sorondo Milano to ask him about the Cathedral and he informed me that it had already been restored. He didn't give me any more details but he sent me a night photo and a video of the Instagram of Ali Romero Farías that I leave for you below:

Before concluding this publication, I would like to add additional important information. The Cathedral of Our Lady of The Assumption is located in front of the Plaza Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi, also the Museum of Nueva Cadiz. Currently a very varied collection of objects recovered from the ruins of Nueva Cádiz, on the island of Cubagua is exhibited, among which there are ceramics, religious sculptures and pieces from the pre-Columbian era. In addition, in the same place, a few meters from the Cathedral is the Monument to the Bells, a work erected by the Municipality Arismendi in honor of the Colonial Bells of the years 1664 and 1851. I'll leave some pictures for you below.

Wow! Such a humble-looking church but so wealthy in historical splendor! I'm truly pleased that you had the opportunity to experience this valuable landmark in Margarita Island with your family before it was damaged by the ravages of time! It's certainly a great blessing that this sacred building was fully restored from its delicate condition to a remarkably stable edifice where people won't hesitate to visit and won't tiptoe to anymore. Thanks a lot @marcosmilano71 for this brilliant article!

Hello friend @storiesoferne. Hello. Thank you for your comment and for your constant support. I really am very grateful to you. Yes, it is one of the oldest Cathedrals in Venezuela. The journalist's appointment is a little longer, where she, with great irony, drew the situation of architecture. I am going to allow you to leave the full quote so that you have an idea of the magnitude of the problem that the Cathedral went through due to the carelessness of the competent authorities, QUOTE: "If you go to the Cathedral of La Asunción, leave the car a few blocks away, on its perimeter do not touch the cornet or by mistake; avoid raising your voice too much when you approach it and, when entering, preferably do it on tiptoe, you are thanked if you take off your shoes; once inside, that only the murmur of spiritual recollection and prayer level its enclosures; if what you want is to party near the century-old church, go elsewhere with your music. No, we are not back to the fervent devotion of yesteryear, it is a very pragmatic way to mitigate the precariousness of this building of almost four centuries that today succumbs to decades of neglect. " END OF QUOTE. This was written by journalist Nilda Silva Franco on 6/18/2017. Thank God yesterday my nephew informed me that they had already restored it. Greetings my friend, a virtual hug and infinite blessings.

Hola amigo @storiesoferne.

I have similar sentiments as Erne, I am happy for you that you got to visit Margarita Island. It's amazing how life unfolds which takes us to unplanned destinations sparked by serendipity and in your case, from a conversation with your student.

The simplicity of the facade really highlights the materials used and the design elements. It's not overpowering. It creates a more "lasting impact over flash with the power of restraint " which is a design philosophy of one of my favorite designers or design firms rather - Meyer Davis.

Hello friend @discoveringarni Good morning from Venezuela. I identify myself with this quote of yours: "lasting impact over flash with the power of restraint" Truly it is so. Simplicity and durability an important style, not sumptuous but very stable. Thank you very much for your comment. Blessings for you and your loved ones.

I wish it's my own quote but it's actually the design motto of Meyer Davis but I'm glad you identify with it. 🙂

¡Hola! :D
