[ENG] In one of the central points of the city of San Antonio de los Altos (Miranda, Venezuela) is the shopping center 'Los Altos'. Characterized by a simple architecture, this building is one of the busiest places in the area, always full of life and situations.
During the last week, and on different days, I have taken a series of photographs of this shopping center that, at first glance, has a humble and somewhat neglected appearance, but which is actually a jewel of modern Venezuelan architecture, representative of this little town.

En uno de los puntos céntricos de la ciudad de San Antonio de los Altos (Miranda, Venezuela) se encuentra el centro comercial 'Los Altos'. Caracterizado por una arquitectura sencilla, este edificio es uno de los lugares más concurridos de la zona, siempre lleno de vida y situaciones.
Durante la última semana, y en distintos días, he realizado una serie de fotografías a este centro comercial que, de primera impresión, tiene apariencia humilde y un tanto descuidada, pero que en realidad es un joya de la arquitectura moderna venezolana, representativa de esta pequeña ciudad.
[ENG] There are many factors that influence the appreciation of architecture, many times it is difficult to observe the essence of a building amid so much information and distractions, however, I invite you to do the exercise of omitting the signs and painting, and observe the dynamics of the spaces, the structure and the systems that shape the original architectural idea.
[ESP] Son muchos factores los que influyen en la apreciación de la arquitectura, muchas veces es difícil observar la esencia de un edificio entre tanta información y distracciones, sin embargo, les invito a realizar el ejercicio de omitir los letreros y la pintura, y observar las dinámicas de los espacios, la estructura y los sistemas que conforman la idea de arquitectura original.
[ENG] When entering the building by the stairs from the main entrance, visitors arrive at this open and fresh space, where cross ventilation works perfectly and where natural lighting is used to the maximum. Also, the routes are intuitively distinguished and it is very easy to orient oneself.
One of the main locations in the complex is the supermarket 'Central Madeirense', which encompasses a considerable part of the building.
[ESP] Al acceder al edificio por las escaleras de la entrada principal, se llega a este espacio abierto y fresco, en donde la ventilación cruzada funciona perfectamente y en donde la iluminación natural es aprovechada al máximo. También, se distinguen intuitivamente los recorridos y es muy fácil orientarse.
Uno de los locales principales del conjunto es el supermercado 'Central Madeirense', el cual conforma una parte considerable del edificio.
[ENG] The building has 2 floors where the premises are located and a basement that works as a parking lot. It has no elevators; vertical circulation systems work with wide ramps and stairs.
[ESP] El edificio tiene 2 pisos en los que se encuentran los locales y un sótano que funciona como estacionamiento. No tiene ascensores; los sistemas de circulación vertical funcionan con amplias rampas y escaleras.
[ENG] The materials featured in the original project are reinforced concrete, glass and metal.
Since the year 2000, approximately, small wooden and metal structures began to be added, these function as shops for different purposes, some sell food, clothing, technological devices, among other things.
[ESP] Los materiales destacados en el proyecto original son el concreto armado, el vidrio y el metal.
Desde el año 2000, aproximadamente, comenzaron a sumarse pequeñas estructuras de madera y metal, estas funcionan como tiendas para distintos fines, algunas venden comida, ropa, artefactos tecnológicos, entre otras cosas.
[ENG] From my point of view, I believe that these kiosks are a natural response to the roominess of the space, perhaps they dull the purity of the architectural project a bit, but also, they create job opportunities, promote economic development and are an incentive to coexistence.
[ESP] Desde mi punto de vista, creo que estos kioscos son una respuesta natural a la holgura del espacio, quizás entorpecen un poco la pureza del proyecto arquitectónico, sin embargo, crean oportunidades de trabajo, promueven el desarrollo económico y son una incentiva a la convivencia.
[ENG] In one of the corridors on the second floor there are also kiosks that take advantage of the spaciousness of the space, they are clothing stores and another for buying and selling gold.
[ESP] En uno de los pasillos del segundo piso también hay kioscos que aprovechan la amplitud del espacio, son tiendas de ropa y otro de compra y venta de oro.
[ENG] In this building, my favorite element is the roof. I think this prefabricated vault system is a very good and versatile design. In addition to allowing excellent natural lighting, it also allows to preserve the central area of the building free of columns and with a double height, thanks to the lightness of the translucent material of the vaults, supported on resistant 'V' shaped beams.
[ESP] De este edificio, mi elemento favorito es el techo. Me parece un diseño muy bueno y versátil este sistema de bóvedas prefabricadas. Además de permitir un excelente iluminación natural, también, permite conservar el área central del edificio libre de columnas y con una doble altura, esto gracias a la ligereza del material traslucido de las bóvedas, soportadas en resistentes vigas con forma de 'V'.
[ENG] Hanging lamps were probably also designed for this building, due to their uniformity and harmony. They are seen to have good resistance.
[ESP] Probablemente las lamparas colgantes también fueron diseñadas para este edificio, por su uniformidad y consonancia. Se ve que tienen buena resistencia.
[ENG] Another important feature of the roof is that, due to the way it is supported by the edge beams, it allows total ventilation of the building (except for the supermarket and the cinema), while providing complete protection against rain.
[ESP] Otra característica importante del techo es que, por la manera en que se apoya en las vigas del borde, permite la ventilación total del edificio (exceptuando el supermercado y el cine), mientras que brinda completa protección contra la lluvia.
[ENG] It is a mental exercise for spatial ability and creativity, trying to visualize these spaces without the additions, as well as imagining other distribution possibilities.
[ESP] Es un ejercicio mental para la habilidad espacial y la creatividad, intentar visualizar estos espacios sin las añadiduras, como también, imaginar otras posibilidades de distribución.
[ENG] The main staircase is quite wide, which ends directly in front of the cinema. There is a third level in this building that functions as the movie theaters, the exit stairs give a brutalist and sculptural aspect to the building.
[ESP] Es bastante amplia la escalera principal, la cual termina directamente frente al cine. Existe un tercer nivel en este edificio que funciona como las salas del cine, las escaleras de la salida le dan un aspecto brutalista y escultural al edificio.
[ENG] A few months ago I drew this scene; I find it very interesting due to the different visible geometries, the angles of the stairs and the buttresses in the columns, the combination of the straight lines with the curves of the ceiling beams, also, the distinction of the gray color of the concrete and the light background.

[ESP] Hace algunos meses dibujé esta escena; me parece muy interesante debido a las distintas geometrías visibles, los ángulos de las escaleras y los contrafuertes en las columnas, la combinación de las líneas rectas con las curvas de las vigas del techo, también, la distinción del color gris del concreto y la luz de fondo.

[ENG] The geometries present in this building are very similar to the architecture that was being carried out in Caracas during the 1960-1980s.
[ESP] Las geometrías presentes en este edificio son muy parecidas a la arquitectura que se estaba realizando en Caracas durante los años 1960-1980.
[ENG] It is very difficult to find information about buildings like this, especially in a small city like San Antonio de los Altos, in addition, to access basic information in here, usually, a series of bureaucratic procedures must be carried out.
[ESP] Es muy difícil encontrar información sobre edificios como este, sobre todo, en una ciudad pequeña como San Antonio de los Altos, además, aquí para acceder a la información básica, usualmente, se deben realizar una serie de tramites burocráticos.
[ENG] The security bars have some quite characteristic patterns, also the exterior lights make me think of the psychedelic scene of the 70s.
[ESP] Las rejas de seguridad tienen algunos patrones bastante característicos, también las luminarias del exterior me hacen pensar en la movida psicodélica de los años 70.
[ENG] It can be accessed by several entrances, this is one of the secondary pedestrian accesses. There are 2 banks in this shopping center, on the days when the pension is charged there is a long line that goes all the way outside.
[ESP] Se puede acceder por varias entradas, este es uno de los accesos peatonales secundarios. Hay 2 bancos en este centro comercial, los días en que se cobra la pensión se hace una larga fila que llega hasta afuera.
[ENG] The logo of the supermarket 'C.M.', for 'Central Madeirense', is a tall structure made of reinforced concrete and that ends in a metal and plastic sign, it is a landmark and a reference point of the city.
[ESP] El logo del supermercardo 'C.M.', para 'Central Madeirense', es una estructura alta hecha de concreto armado y que remata en un cartel de metal y plástico, es un hito y un punto de referencia de la ciudad.
[ENG] Graffiti is part of San Antonio's youth counterculture, almost every building in the area has a bit of it. The good news is that one of the days when I was taking photos I coincided with a friend's relative measuring the distance between the columns and the ceiling, I approached him and asked what those measurements were for and he told me that they might paint the building in the next weeks.
[ESP] El graffiti es parte de la contracultura juvenil de San Antonio, casi todos los edificios de la zona tienen un poco de esto. La buena noticia es que uno de los días en que tomaba fotos me conseguí al familiar de un amigo midiendo la distancia entre las columnas y el techo, me acerqué y le pregunté para que eran esas medidas y me comentó que posiblemente pinten el edificio en las próximas semanas.
[ENG] The ground floor of the building is elevated, allowing natural ventilation in the basement.
[ESP] La planta baja del edificio esta elevada, lo que permite la ventilación natural del sótano.
[ENG] Very close to that entrance area of the parking lot there is a bakery, so it always smells like freshly baked bread.
[ESP] Muy cerca de esa área entrada del estacionamiento hay una panadería, por lo que siempre huele a pan recién horneado.
[ENG] There are enough parking spaces for all visitors, in addition, there is surveillance 24 hours a day.
[ESP] Hay suficientes puestos de estacionamiento para todos los visitantes, además, hay vigilancia las 24 horas del día.
[ENG] From the parking there are several options to access the ground floor, one of them is a long ramp with more than 15 meters, there are also several stairs.
[ESP] Desde el estacionamiento hay varias opciones para acceder a la planta baja, una de ellas es una rampa larga con más de 15 metros, también hay varias escaleras.
[ENG] There is a fairly modern security system. Once again, the building guards saw me taking the photos and they did not claim me, it was fortunate, because many times they have told me that I require a permit from the mayor's office.
[ESP] Hay un sistema de seguridad bastante moderno. Nuevamente, los vigilantes del edificio me vieron tomando las fotos y no me reclamaron, fue una suerte, porque muchas veces sí me han dicho que requiero de un permiso de la alcaldía.
[ENG] The south facade of the building is the one that faces the main road, which is called the perimeter road, while the north facade faces another parking area.
[ESP] La fachada sur del edificio es la que da hacia la vía principal, la que llaman carretera perimetral, mientras que la fachada norte da hacia otra zona de estacionamientos.
[ENG] From the outside, the roof also denotes a modern language where the structure is evident.
[ESP] Desde afuera el techo también denota un lenguaje moderno en donde se evidencia la estructura.
[ENG] I like to watch the buildings from the height, from perspectives in which they appear to be scale models, so can be observed some things that go unnoticed when walking through them.
From this point of view, 3 different roofs are distinguished in the same building, the one that is furthest to the right is the one that covers the supermarket, the flat roof is the one that covers the stores and the wavy roof is the one that covers the common spaces, the central square of the shopping center.
[ESP] Me gusta ver los edificios desde la altura, desde perspectivas en las que parecen modelos a escala, así pueden observarse algunas cosas que al recorrerlos pasan desapercibidas.
Desde este punto de vista se distinguen 3 techos diferentes en el mismo edificio, el que está más hacia la derecha es el que cubre el supermercado, el techo plano es el que cubre las tiendas y el techo ondulado es el que cubre los espacios comunes, la plaza central del centro comercial.
[ENG] From the elevated of San Antonio, which is part of the main thoroughfare of the city, can be read the sign of the cinema where the films and the hours of the functions appear. The elevated was built long after the mall.
[ESP] Desde el elevado de San Antonio, que forma parte de la vía principal de la ciudad, puede leerse el letrero del cine donde aparecen las películas y el horario de las funciones. El elevado se construyó mucho después que el centro comercial.
[ENG] Photography is an activity that allows me to study architecture in an empirical way, it is an artistic practice that I enjoy a lot. Also, it is an attempt to get involved with society trying to add value by registering the buildings that I have visited since my childhood and that are part of the history of San Antonio de los Altos.
[ESP] La fotografía es una actividad que me permite estudiar la arquitectura de una manera empírica, es una práctica artística que disfruto bastante. También, es un intento de involucrarme con la sociedad procurando aportar un valor al registrar los edificios que he visitado desde mi infancia y que forman parte de la historia de San Antonio de los Altos.
[ENG] Los Altos Shopping Center bears part of the city's name, at the time it was built it was one of the buildings that was most at the vanguard of the area and is still one of the most important.
For me this building represents everyday life; as an architecture student, it is a reference that I like to study, draw and explore.
