Designing Coat Racks (Concrete & Steel) | Collaboration with Díada [ENG/ESP]

[ENG] Teamwork is a virtue, a natural event and an impulse of individual motivation, thanks to the sense of society, participation and belonging.

Greetings to the entire community. Today I share an experience of teamwork, a furniture design project that I carried out six years ago, in collaboration with the Díada association, a design company in Caracas.

El trabajo en equipo es una virtud, un evento natural y un impulso de motivación individual, eso gracias al sentido de sociedad, participación y de pertenencia.

Saludos a toda la comunidad. Hoy comparto una experiencia de trabajo en equipo, un proyecto de diseño de mobiliario que realicé hace seis años, en colaboración con la asociación Díada, una empresa de diseño de Caracas.

[ENG] The cover image of the publication was the first successful test with the threaded rod, it was a crucial moment for the project and it was a great satisfaction when the system with the nuts worked.

At that time I was experimenting with concrete, making small sculptures while discovering new textures and ways of creating objects. I study at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Central University of Venezuela, in 2015 I was for the second or third semester and I always took the sculptures I made to the university to show them, one day one of the highest semester students saw my work and it seemed good to him to carry out a team project, since he was undertaking in the creation of a design company.

En esas fechas yo estaba haciendo experimentos con concreto, hacía esculturas pequeñas mientras descubría nuevas texturas y maneras de crear objetos. Yo estudio en la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, en 2015 estaba por segundo o tercer semestre y siempre llevaba las esculturas que hacía a la universidad para mostrarlas, un día uno de los estudiantes de semestres más altos vio mi trabajo y le pareció bien realizar un proyecto en equipo, ya que él estaba emprendiendo en la creación de una compañía de diseño.

[ENG] They had the precise idea of what they wanted, a heavy base mass with a rod that would hold the clothes, something simple and minimalist. The deal then was that I would design the base and they would take care of the pole part.

For me the biggest challenge was to create the union between the two elements, since it was better if they could be transported separately. For that I came up with a way to be able to screw a bar directly into the concrete and without having to drill, since the nuts would go inside the formwork.

[ESP] Ellos tenían la idea precisa de lo que querían, una masa pesada de base con una cabilla que sostendría la ropa, algo sencillo y minimalista. El trato entonces era que yo diseñaría la base y ellos se encargarían de la parte de la cabilla.

Para mi el mayor reto era crear la unión entre los dos elementos, ya que era mejor si podían transportarse por separado. Para eso se me ocurrió una manera de poder enroscar una barra directo en el concreto y sin tener que perforar, ya que las tuercas irían dentro del encofrado.

[ENG] I had materials in the workshop of my family's house, with that we did the first tests. The three of us got together, Iván, Antón and I, and we started the whole process with the boxes, the threaded bars, anime, plastics, cement, sand, stones and some fibers.

[ESP] Yo tenía materiales en el taller de la casa de mi familia, con eso hicimos las primeras pruebas. Nos reunimos tres, Iván, Antón y yo, y comenzamos con todo el proceso con las cajas, las barras roscadas, anime, plásticos, cemento, arena, piedras y algunas fibras.

[ENG] After waiting a week for them to dry well, we opened the first tests and we really liked the result, we found it something experimental and innovative.

[ESP] Luego de esperar una semana, que se secaran bien, sacamos las primeras pruebas y nos gustó bastante el resultado, nos pareció algo experimental e innovador.

[ENG] The project lasted several months, because the plan was to make twenty coat racks in total. Díada also worked on product photography and good publicity for them. Something they are very good at is doing public relations, at that time they knew a lot of people from Caracas who could boost their company and the coat rack project, and that's how it was.

[ESP] El proyecto duró varios meses, porque el plan fue hacer veinte percheros en total. Díada también trabajó en la fotografías de producto y en hacerles buena publicidad. Algo en lo que ellos son muy buenos es haciendo relaciones públicas, en ese momento conocían mucha gente de Caracas que podía impulsar su compañía y el proyecto de los percheros, y así fue.

[ENG] The project had an incredible promotion. One of the stores that they approached to advertise the product and its brand was a well-known clothing design store at that time called 'Del Rayo'. This people liked the objects and decided to include it in a fashion show they held, an event that I attended, mainly to help put up the coat racks, which were heavy, but I also enjoyed it a lot until the end. It was a very good experience with different people than the one I used to know, models, artists and designers.

A very good coincidence was that when we got to the place I saw my uncle Carlos, a very close relative, he was working on setting the sound of the event.

[ESP] El proyecto tuvo una promoción increíble. Una de las tiendas a la que ellos se acercaron para publicitar el producto y su marca, era una tienda de diseño de ropa muy conocida en ese momento que se llama 'Del Rayo'. A estas personas les gustaron mucho los objetos y decidieron incluirlos en un desfile de modas que realizaron, evento al que yo asistí, principalmente para ayudar a colocar los percheros, que eran pesados, pero también disfruté mucho hasta el final. Fue una experiencia muy buena con gente diferente a la que yo conocía, modelos artistas y diseñadores.

Una casualidad muy buena fue que cuando llegamos al lugar y me conseguí a mi tío Carlos, familiar muy cercano, él estaba trabajando colocando el sonido del evento.

[ENG] This was the final product, it was a very good design and teamwork experience, it was very pleasant to have been part of that design event, I will never forget the lights, the music, the models walking through the coat racks.

[ESP] Este fue el producto final, fue una muy buena experiencia de diseño y trabajo en equipo, fue muy grato haber sido parte de aquel evento de diseño, nunca olvidare las luces, la música, a las modelos paseando a través de los percheros.

[ENG] Design is one of my favorite activities, it is like architecture on a smaller scale, with fewer elements, where inventiveness and imagination are always welcome. I would like to continue creating objects, trying new things and learning more and more how to transform matter.
