A Romantic Affair with Cities

CITIES 01.jpg
The Love Sculpture in New York City, USA

Humanity's relationship with urban environments vary to certain degrees ever since they began constructing habitable buildings. As subjective as it is, people's perceptions about cities entail mixed feelings of love and hate.

Portal to Architectural Nostalgia

One weekend afternoon some days ago, inside a huge shopping mall within my neighborhood, I walk towards a well-known bookstore, popular for its diverse collection of office supplies, school items, and most importantly, books. I happen to be there due to a movie date I organized with a dear friend a few hours earlier. But arriving ahead of schedule, I decide to spend the extra time in one of my favorite hangouts as a productive way of waiting for my companion.

The bookstore is jam-packed with people of all ages (still wearing masks due to pandemic protocols). The interior premises is a massive open space that's brightly lit by overhead lighting fixtures. Arranged in uniform rows are several freestanding white-colored metal shelves plus wall display cabinets exhibiting a wide variety of interesting materials with their industry niches properly labeled on top.

I dash to the architecture section right away where only a handful of bookworms were lingering. Out of nowhere, a giant book entitled "Cities of the World" by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg, filled with colorful illustrations, unexpectedly catches my undivided attention. Flipping through its panoramic pages decorated with recognizable landmarks, an unstoppable flow of cherished memories immediately bombards my thoughts and emotions - reminding me of the remarkable moments I experienced with the fascinating architecture in those locations. The following globally renowned cities are a few of my favorites.

Paris, France: The Cradle of Gothic Architecture

Paris, the capital city of France, popularly called the "City of Love" had humble beginnings on the banks of the Seine River - sprouting from a tiny island named Île de la Cité and transforming into an enormous metropolis we all admire today.

CITIES 02.jpg
Panoramic urban landscape of Paris as viewed from the Eiffel Tower

I couldn't describe my ecstatic outbursts when I finally met this city's incredible buildings face to face. Visiting the French capital and the country of France in general, was one of my lifelong dreams as a tourist, but most importantly, as a true lover and professional practitioner of architecture.

CITIES 03.jpg
Bird's eye perspective of the city of Paris, France

See, many friends of mine who have already visited this city before have been telling me this all over and over again. "You have to travel to Paris - she has so much to offer - culture, history, food, fashion, and the plethora of buildings with amazing architectural styles waiting to be discovered. No regrets at all"!

CITIES 04.jpg
Exterior Facade of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France

This vibrant metropolis is considered to be an immensely peculiar creature of architecture. Its most recent built environments have morphed from classic edifices with ancient design characteristics, including old houses, mansions, and palaces that have evolved into commercial shops and residential apartments, encompassing a diverse collection of historic monuments from various centuries.

CITIES 05.jpg
The avenue of Champs-Élysées with the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France

While strolling with a leisurely pace along its accessible alleys, sidewalks, and streets, I kept gazing upwards, scrutinizing the wealthy array of design elements, profiles, and details these facades embody.

CITIES 06.jpg
French-style architecture in Paris, France

As truly enriching as the experience was, it was like being transported back in time capsules, visually treated to a tremendous variety of architectural styles - Medieval, Renaissance, French Baroque, Gothic, Classicism, Rococo, Neo-Classicism, Consulate, Empire, Restoration, Haussmann, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Contemporary until the Modern Movement.

CITIES 07.jpg
Paris Opera (Académie Nationale de Musique) in Paris, France

In fact, Paris is primarily recognized as the birthplace of Gothic architecture as early as the 12th century, notably with the pioneering Basilica of Saint-Denis where it has become both a political and religious hub for almost every French king.

CITIES 08.jpg
The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France

Although some of my initial encounters with the city's exterior facades made me scratch my head due to their strange appearances (perhaps alien-looking fronts), most of them had an exquisite flair of sophistication, elegance, and royalty attached to their visual impressions. As prominently striking as these different architectural signatures were, they evoked a sense of personal accomplishment for me - being able to witness upfront the awesome buildings from a distinguished European nation.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Melting Pot of Middle Eastern Design

Moving on to the next metropolis of immense interest, let's head over to the scorching, dry, and sandy deserts of the Middle East. Did you know that Dubai, one of the seven (7) emirates of the United Arab Emirates, originated as a community of fishing villages?

CITIES 09.jpg
The Emirates Towers in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Although not the capital, this urban landmark is the country's commercial hub for financial and tourism services, not to mention the global headquarters of the prestigious airline company: Emirates.

I used to live and work in this fascinating metropolitan environment with a diverse population of human beings comprising 200 nationalities. Isn't that mind-blowing? "Here, I get to be exposed to the rich cultures, traditions, and friendships of people from around the world. No need to travel far because they’re simply close by - a stone's throw away." These were my recurring thoughts during my arrival there.

CITIES 10.jpg
Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

But most importantly, due to this locality's wealthy, organized, and strategic government, its citizens, foreign residents, and tourists alike enjoy lots of perks. And if still not enough, people here get to be directly exposed to one of the most out-of-this-world buildings, crazy monuments, and spectacular architectural landmarks they couldn’t find anywhere else on the planet.

CITIES 11.jpg
Burj Khalifa (world's tallest skyscraper) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

I was truly blessed to be immersing myself in one of the greatest opportunities of living in this ultra-modern urban environment - the amazing experiences of top-notched architecture on a superior level never expected. At least for me it was.

The architecture of Dubai had witnessed a rapid shift from an ordinary fishing settlement to a world-class entrepreneurial destination to date. In just a span of a few decades, its architectural landscape skyrocketed or "leapfrogged" from simple Barastis (huts made with palm fronds) to an urban skyline embracing iconic skyscrapers whose footprints got immortalized on the international stage.

CITIES 12.jpg
The district of Deira and Mercato Shopping Mall in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Whenever I drove around, commuted on the bus or metro, shopped at their malls, chilled at their coffee shops, or merely took a walk along the city's beautiful sidewalks, I was flabbergasted by the imposing architecture of the towering buildings, peculiar monuments, and lavish edifices that surrounded me.

CITIES 13.jpg
Madinat Jumeirah Mall in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Although I felt like being choked and intimidated during my initial months of being trapped inside this urban jungle of glass, concrete, and steel, I was glad to have discovered a considerable amount of green patches such as trees, shrubs, fruit trees, and flowers scattered at strategic locations. These elements of nature appeared artificial at first glance, due to the sand dunes and desert backdrops, but the property developers managed to install water systems to keep their flourishing foliage irrigated and cultivated despite the harsh weather.

CITIES 14.jpg
The Palm Jumeirah Resorts and Hotels in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai's architectural signature is a creative hodgepodge of several design classifications namely Islamic, Arabic, Persian, Indian, and the International Style. Because of the country's cruel climate, architects and designers ensured the installation of heat-resistant materials for their buildings, including other eco-friendly architectural ingredients that paved the way for enhanced sustainability in the constant evolution of its urban infrastructure.

CITIES 15.jpg
The iconic Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Nevertheless, despite the city's shortcomings in terms of its architectural growth and development, I truly learned to love Dubai for all its worth. I've never expected the surprising possibility of completely transforming barren deserts into a super city, housing marvelous edifices that make one's jaw drop in awe. The tremendous task alone of creating never-imagined buildings was enough to call it a magnificent feat of architecture and design. Until we meet again…

New York, USA: From Neoclassicism to the International Style

And lastly, we have the "Big Apple", also known as New York City, situated on the East Coast of the North American continent. The first time I visited this American landmark, I said to myself "Oh, New York must be another urban jungle just like Dubai, full of skyscrapers that sprout everywhere".

CITIES 16.jpg
The architectural skyline of Manhattan in New York City, USA

Well, despite their obvious similarities in some architectural styles, the metropolis of New York radiated a positively different vibe. It extended a more open personality - diverse, eclectic, classic, everything in between.

CITIES 17.jpg
One of the historic buildings in New York City, USA

Though I have to admit that the atmosphere there was completely contrary, non-inviting, unwelcoming, and reserved after the horrific attacks of terrorism on September 11, 2001, as I had the opportunity to visit the city before and after the 911 crisis as a comparison.

CITIES 18.jpg
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, USA

Regardless of the catastrophic tragedy this vibrant metropolis endured in the past, New York was still a "city that never sleeps". And that's exceptionally true most especially for its fascinating architecture, accumulating one of the greatest collections of buildings in the world. In reality, its design heritage is as diverse, energetic, and cosmopolitan as the multi-national residents there.

CITIES 19.jpg
Times Square in New York City, USA

An interesting plethora of architectural characteristics emerged since the founding of New York City. Prevalent design styles spanning centuries and encompassing Neo-Classicism, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Second Empire Baroque, Beaux-Arts Classicism, Second Renaissance Revival, Art-Deco, and International Style were some of those I've witnessed there.

CITIES 20.jpg
Times Square and Ninth Avenue to Eleventh Avenue in New York City, USA

Unlike urban centers in other locations on the planet, the city of New York held plenty of famous monuments, edifices, and landmarks produced by renowned Architects. It was as if each exterior facade displayed an architectural brand, praised and admired by passersby from all walks of life.

CITIES 21.jpg
The New York Public Library

Everywhere I gazed, the said building was either published in books, magazines, prints, in the media, or of significant importance to the masses. My experiences were comparable to walks in an outdoor museum, living and breathing with enormous artistic objects.

CITIES 22.jpg
The Statue of Liberty in New York City, USA

The history of New York City's architecture was undoubtedly a superior fusion of multicultural ideas as much as the diversity of individuals who live there. The various design signatures that originated from different parts of the world were responsible for creating its distinctive urban identity and the architectural composition it's proud to embrace. I for one couldn't be more overjoyed for being able to actually see, touch, smell, and feel, up close and personal, the magnificent buildings of one of our civilization's greatest cities in existence today.

Back to the Real World…

As I'm about to reach the concluding pages of the book I'm currently browsing, my smartphone suddenly bursts with a loud ringtone. Yay, my movie date is calling me! It's now time to entertain ourselves with the latest adventures of "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" in one of the modern cinemas of this mall. Who knows? Perhaps there's more stunning architecture waiting for us to be enjoyed in that film.

#Hive, have you been to any of the 3 cities mentioned here? If so, which city architecture resonates with you the most? What's your favorite metropolis in the world and why do you love its architecture?

Paris is the only city you mention where I have managed two visits, enjoyed the architecture, vibe when walking from one place to the next, especially went out of our way to in the 1970's to experience travel in rubber wheel underground train, was interesting to us where no under ground trains exist.

Not crazy about big bustling cities, architecture would be the only thing to draw me into experience.

@tipu curate 2

Hello @joanstewart. I'd like to start by thanking you for your generous kindness - that's highly appreciated! 😊

I'm truly delighted you were able to travel to Paris and personally encounter its fantastic buildings - there's nothing quite like it. I bet the rubber wheel underground train must have been a thrilling ride for you as well as this is a fascinating piece of technology for a rapid transit system. 👍

Hey, would be awesome to see you publish in the Architecture+Design Community about remarkable architecture you've fallen in love with in your home country of South Africa or other international destinations that interest you. 😀

If I get into places with unique architecture here I will be sure to remember to photograph and share, not often I venture into our cities anymore.

Have a wonderful day!

No worries, only when you're ready and available. Wish you an awesome day and have fun on your architectural journey! 😊

Have a great day, nice to visit cities through the lens of another.

It seems great to me how you approach the post through a small personal journey in the middle of a bookstore while you waiting for your friend and at the same time it makes me remember that I have a post cooking for several weeks and that I have not yet been able to culminate. The reason is that, as in your post, I also refer to several places in the world although my theme is different from yours.

I really enjoyed this trip through your extraordinary vision of environments and their architecture, particularly those sites that I do not know as New York and Dubai. Although through the images I can appreciate the big difference between these cities, I really appreciate their comments on how the culture of these peoples end up turning them into what they are today.

By the way, one of the great monuments of the United States such as the Statue of Liberty was the work of the French, which confers another sample of the multiculturality of this metropolis.

Thanks my friend @storiesoferne for this incredible journey.

Kind greetings my friend @charsdesign. The instant I saw your profile photo with the green background, I immediately had the feeling that it was you, haha. 🤣 We surely missed your superb posts in our beloved community, and I believe it's about time to return and publish your awesome content here. (Definitely excited too about your new publication about a collection of places with a unique underlying theme - looking forward to that!) 😀👍

Certainly, as mundane as the activity of reading architecture books are, chances are they spark nostalgia, triggering memorable events that inspire us to recollect vivid experiences about remarkable buildings. Furthermore, I'm pretty much aware that you've traveled to Paris already, and it would be great if you could also visit Dubai and New York one of these days. And speaking about New York's Statue of Liberty, isn't it amazing how the French influence has penetrated the North American continent? (By the way, they also have a small replica of the Statue of Liberty in Paris. Have you seen it when you were there?) 😀

My utmost pleasure for sharing this interesting story for your learning and entertainment. Thank you for your immense support! Best wishes! 😊

The instant I saw your profile photo with the green background, I immediately had the feeling that it was you, haha.

Thanks for your comment my friend because then it means that my avatar is doing his job. 😅

I believe it's about time to return and publish your awesome content here.

For several months I have been intending to publish, but the post has become quite long. A couple of weeks ago I had decided to publish it in parts, but then I felt that it was necessary to put everything together, so it is still in development and the time available always works against it. 😫

And speaking about New York's Statue of Liberty, isn't it amazing how the French influence has penetrated the North American continent?

You're right, the French have managed to stay ahead in almost any aspect of design and New York is one of the main markets in the world, so this influence seems natural.

By the way, they also have a small replica of the Statue of Liberty in Paris. Have you seen it when you were there?

Now that you mention it, it's funny because my wife and I were looking for the replica of the Statue of Liberty in Paris several times during our stay, but for some strange reason we didn't have the pleasure of looking at it. 😆

Thank you for your enthusiastic responses to all my valuable points. Indeed, our true love for cities continues to teach, inspire, and entertain us for as long as we exist on this planet. Have lots of fun on your escapades with architecture and design. See you soon my friend! 😊

Hello dear friend @storiesoferne good day
What a beautiful sculpture dedicated to one of the most important feelings of human beings, what a beautiful viewpoint to observe the city, Paris is a beautiful city, especially for those of us who love architecture. What a beautiful feeling it must have been to be in front of those icons of French architecture.

Dubai is a destination that I have on my wish list to visit, I would love to see modern architecture, such as period buildings in the oldest area there

In New York I really like the mixture of styles of buildings, I love the modernism of skyscrapers, like the architectural icons that are widespread in all parts of the world

I did not have the opportunity to visit any of the three countries, I would love to be able to do it one day, and enjoy the architecture of the place

Excellent post, I appreciate that you let us know these beautiful images and the story related to them

Have a happy start of the week

Warm greetings dear friend @jlufer. Love is indeed one of mankind's most cherished emotions. Without it, the world will obviously be at a standstill, not to mention the absence of marvelous architecture in its geography. Without love, the remarkable buildings featured in this post would not even be constructed due to the passionate dedication required to create such feats. 😊

Thank you for your wonderful opinions on Paris, Dubai, and New York. As these 3 cities nurture spectacular architecture and are globally popular in their own right, this doesn't mean that other urban communities are left behind. 👍

What about your Argentinian homeland of Corrientes? Would you consider it a world-class environment and why?

Yes, of course, and it is related to what I always emphasize in my posts, the strong natural presence that coexists in the buildings that are located in the heart of the city. A modality that is gaining space in the world, more and more architects and engineers are incorporating nature into their construction projects
Have a beautiful afternoon

Well said dear friend @jlufer. 👍 Without a doubt, Mother Nature will always be a crucial component in today's fastest-growing cities like Corrientes. In this way can we truly say that these urban communities are sustainable and beneficial for the long-term survival of our planet. Have a pleasant day! 😊

Greetings my friend ! It is wonderful to read your impressions about these great metropolises you have visited, all of them have their own charm and wonder for all their history, architecture, culture and art. No doubt we are a world that has progressed by the contribution of all to create these great infrastructures. Personally, Paris has always caught my attention, for all that this city has contributed with respect to art and architecture, I hope to have the opportunity to visit it and admire its landscape and great works, which are jewels of world architecture.

Good afternoon my friend @wilfredocav. Glad to know that you have been impressed by the 3 cities I've featured in my post, with Paris as your most attractive choice. Indeed this French capital has continuously captivated mankind since time immemorial with its incredible architecture, inviting more enthusiasts to travel to this beloved metropolis. Thank you for expressing your valuable opinion and for following my architectural narratives. Cheers! 👍😊

They will certainly be some of my destinations when I am able to travel. Best regards !

I wish you all the best in your exciting voyage towards experiencing the best of what the world can offer in terms of architecture and design. Have fun! 😊

Dear friend @storiesoferne This post is definitely a gem! You show us so many places always highlighting the important and relevant architecture of each country, as well as landscapes and urbanism. It is complicated to decide which of these places is more beautiful as each one has its appeal. In New York you show us both eclectic and classic architecture together with modern architecture, the imposing Notre Dame Cathedral, Palm Jumeirah Resorts, the tallest skyscraper in the world in Dubai Burj Khalifa and many others. I was fascinated! Amazing friend. Have a great day and start of the week😊

Good afternoon dear friend @dimascastillo90. I'm sincerely glad you found my post to your liking! 👍 Indeed, as much as the 3 cities highlighted here are gorgeous, they don't compete with each other in terms of their architectural allure. Engrained in their marvelous culture, their stunning buildings are also concrete manifestations of their distinctive identities as urban icons. 😊

If you would consider your city of Buenos Aires, Argentina for instance, what fascinating appeal does it contribute to the world of architecture?

I agree that each country has its appeal in architecture. Buenos Aires, for example, although it is not my city, but I live in it... has fascinating attractions that have contributed to the world of architecture such as the famous Obelisk and the bridge of the woman, known worldwide, in addition to this after the second world war came many influences of brutalist architecture where the building of the mortgage bank and the national library stand out.

In another aspect we have skyscrapers that were the tallest in Latin America for its time as is the case of the Barolo palace and countless other palaces of bourgeois families were and are recognized attractions. Look my friend @storiesoferne I took the time to make you a collage with the works of architecture that I mentioned 😅

Picsart_22-06-28_16-47-34-894.jpg

Wow! What a truly impressive gallery of Buenos Aires! Thank you for creating this interesting collage for our conversation here. 😀👍 This Argentinian capital is undoubtedly a world-class metropolis, filled with historical influences, cultural icons, and architectural treasures worthy of our appreciation. Would love to travel there someday and personally experience the incredibly influential contributions it has produced to the global community of architecture and design. More power my friend! 😊

So wonderful to see @storiesoferne 😁
Isn’t it fascinating how a book with pictures or just going through one owns photo albums can get back all those memories, font thoughts and feelings looking back.
Now this is so funny… guess where I am going Friday early morning ✈️ To Paris for a long weekend 🤩🤩🤩 I so can’t wait.
Sorry I haven’t been around much, but rather busy lately hehehe
But I’m still here.

New York is also still one of those places I so want to visit to experience. Somehow Dubai doesn’t attract me, I don’t know why… but Paris… yes for sure. Can’t wait to take it all in, the city, the architecture and much much more.
Even though I was born in France I haven’t spend much time there as when I was 2 years old my parents left it. I need to catch up… hehehe
Have a wonderful day and great start of the new week 👋🏻😁

Hi there @littlebee4. As strange as it may seem, nostalgia does happen in unexpected places. In the realm of architecture and design, this usually occurs to me a lot. So don't be surprised if you see me publishing more tales about unforgettable flashbacks that basically reflect my being a daydreamer, lol. 🤣

Wow, what a wonderful coincidence! I'm definitely super excited about your weekend trip to Paris. It's high time to celebrate your reunion with your beloved birthplace! And this also means more exciting adventures with French architecture plus other buildings that captivate your keen interest. Above all, more architectural content to collect and document for future publications in our beloved community right? 👍

Thank you for expressing your thoughts as well on Dubai and New York. Have a safe, productive, and delightful escapade in Paris! 😊

Hi @storiesoferne 👋🏻😁
It sure happens suddenly and is remarkable in my eyes. I don’t mind reading about it, it’s nice to be a daydreamer… and reminisce about memories.

It sure is a coincidence 😎😁💃🏻 Can’t wait… and that is exactly what I will be doing. Gathering more ideas, inspirations and photography, but for most new memories and adventures 😊
And more architectural content to post here 🤩🤩🤓 yay!

You are welcome, thank you so much. Much appreciated 😁
Have a great day and almost midweek 👋🏻☀️

Happy for you dear @littlebee4. I can simply imagine the huge smile on your face as you explore the architectural splendor of Paris. Awesome, just a couple of days more to go before Friday! Yay! 😊 We can't wait to fully experience your incredible discoveries and more on the Hive. Have lots of fun! 👍 😎

Thank you for your kindness @storiesoferne 😊
There will a smile 😀 allllll the time 🤩💃🏻
We will… up to new adventures. 🥂

Counting down the days haha 😂
Enjoy your week, every moment!

Very nice pictures, loved the shot of the infrastructures and the different sites you show us.

Very good job with the post, the truth is that if I liked it a lot. Greetings!

Always a tremendous pleasure to captivate your imagination dear @soulsdetour! And thank you so much for immersing yourself in my architectural adventures! 😊 I intentionally shared these 3 extraordinary locations due to their popularity as global destinations. Not to say that I've taken for granted other deserving urban centers around the world - yet in terms of their architectural appeal, I believe these remarkable landmarks serve as awesome demonstrations where a diverse mix of architectural styles can be appreciated, studied, and experienced. 👍

Well, I never thought about cities competing with their urban counterparts on their seldom outrageous buildings simply to mesmerize, intimidate, or bewilder their foreign visitors. On the other hand, perhaps this could be their marketing strategy (from a business perspective) to strongly lure more tourists, residents, and investors into their localities, thus directly improving their cultural, social, and economic development. Have you wondered about this possibility too? 😀

Your personal preference for more peaceful communities makes perfect sense. Not everyone desires to live in stressful environments as most typical cities around the world are. In fact, more people nowadays choose to allocate their energies to the countryside, suburbs, and other neighborhoods much closer to Mother Nature, away from the hustle and bustle of urban lifestyles. 😊
