Hi friends

Today I present to you something that we all carry in our hearts.
Our cathedral San Mames.
It is not a cathedral even if it has that name, we do not meet to pray, or see its Gothic arches or its beautiful stained glass windows.
Today we are going to be playful and we change the classic for the modern.

una cosa que todos llevamos en el corazón.
Nuestra catedral San Mames.
No es una catedral aunque tenga ese nombre, no nos reunimos para rezar, ni ver sus arcos góticos o sus bonitas vidrieras.
Hoy vamos a ser lúdicos y cambiamos lo clásico por lo moderno.

I will tell you a little about the history of this soccer field that we call the cathedral.

Athletic Club de Bilbao is a soccer club that does not have foreign players, only players from the Basque Country, that makes us proud and makes us lose many games, but we are not here today to tell those stories.
They also call us The Lions

Os contare un poco la historia de este campo de futbol que llamamos la catedral.

El Athletic Club de bilbao es un club de futbol que no tiene jugadores extranjeros solo jugadores del País Vasco, eso nos enorgullece y nos hace perder muchos partido , pero no estamos hoy para contar esas historias.
También nos llaman Los Leones

The cathedral was built in 1913 on the grounds of a bank,

They did not have the money to build it at that time, the budget was 50,000 pesetas, a lot of money for that time, but the partners donated almost everything, the fans were very large in those days.

La catedral fu construida en 1913 en terrenos de un banco.

No tenían dinero para construirlo en aquellos tiempos el presupuesto era de 50.000 pesetas, mucho dinero para aquella época, pero los socios donaron casi todo, la afición era muy grande en aquellos tiempos.

The arch was built in a reform in 1953.

With this arch the most modern of that time the columns were removed, removing the dead angles that they made.

How to build it, where to get the land from and how to do it without too much delay?

¿Cómo construirlo, de donde sacar los terrenos y cómo hacerlo sin demasiada tardanza?

It was a great work with all the modern advances and the building adapts to the urban architecture that was being created in Bilbao, modern and functional.
The work was built in parts and thus it progressed without too much inconvenience to the citizens.

Fue una gran obra con todos los adelantos modernos y el edificio se adapta a la arquitectura urbana que se estaba creando en Bilbao, modernos y funcionales.
la obra se construyó por partes y así avanzo sin demasiadas molestias a los ciudadanos.

As we can see, the facade is white, which seems beautiful to me without understanding, those triangles that I have learned are twisted ETFE. They give it an elegant look and the lighting at night is beautiful.

Como podemos apreciar la fachada es blanca, que a mí sin entender me parece preciosa, esos triángulos que he aprendido que son ETFE torsionado. Le dan un aspecto elegante y la iluminación por la noche, es precioso.

Everything around it is a large esplanade to house the cars and the days that there is no party for the recreation of all.

What a great presentation of the Nuevo San Mamés, a true jewel of modern architecture and design, also located in a privileged position next to the Ría de Bilbao, not far from the Guggenhein Museum and that contributes to making the city a place elegant, cozy and novel for the thousands of tourists who constantly visit it. Although the old stadium is missed, not in vain considered as 'the cathedral', since it was one of the first stadiums in the country and therefore, its history is legendary, it must be recognized that the city has gained a lot with this new design, which offers a promising future to the new generations of Basque footballers. Qué gran presentación del Nuevo San Mamés, una verdadera joya de la arquitectura y del diseño modernos, situado, además, en una posición privilegiada junto a la Ría de Bilbao, no muy del Museo Guggenhein y que contribuye a hacer de la ciudad, un lugar elegante, acogedor y novedoso para los miles de turistas que constantemente la visitan. Aunque se eche de menos el viejo estadio, no en vano considerado como 'la catedral', pues fue uno de los primeros estadios del país y por lo tanto, su historia es legendaria, hay que reconocer que la ciudad ha ganado mucho con este nuevo diseño, que ofrece un futuro prometedor a las nuevas generaciones de futbolistas vascos. You know that we are very proud of our cathedral hahaha well the truth is that I am very proud of my city, but this is different, I do not like football, but they are my lions hehe
Then the construction of the new one went to pieces as can be seen so as not to destroy the whole old one.
We had problems with the bow that we wanted to keep, something that after many studies could not be and now it is in Lezama where the Lions train.
And as you say, it is in the center of the city and that is an advantage since you do not need a car with the subway, you are covered for the trip, then the atmosphere of the surrounding streets, that is a hobby.
A cathedral that is not to pray but to enjoy and some to take the stress out of life.

Sabes que estamos muy orgullosos de nuestra catedral jajaj bueno la verdad es que estoy muy orgullosa de mi ciudad, pero esto es distinto, no me gusta el futbol, pero ellos son mis leones jeje
Luego la construcción del nuevo fue a trozos como se ve para no destruir el viejo entero.
Tuvimos problemas con el arco que queríamos conservar, algo que después de muchos estudios no pudo ser y ahora esta en Lezama donde los Leones entrenan.
y como bien dices está en el centro de la ciudad y eso es una ventaja ya que no necesitas n choche con el metro estas cubierto para el viaje, luego el ambiente de las calles de alrededor, eso es afición.
Una catedral que no es para rezar sino para disfrutar y alguno para sacar el estrés de la vida.

This is the first time that I read an article about Athletic Club de Bilbao. It is great to know about the players they employ to which the fans and the club itself are very proud. I am not a die-hard fan of soccer (but I am fond of soccer).

By the way, the inside of the stadium is very beautiful when empty.

Athletic Club de Bilbao was one of the first soccer clubs for that reason so much tradition, being also the only team that does not have foreigners, only players from the quarry that is also a point of pride for us.

Hello @txatxy. What a spectacular stadium! I think the name "Cathedral San Mames" is also a perfect terminology for that marvelous building because it simply demonstrates how extremely religious the die-hard fans and players of the Athletic Club de Bilbao are with their favorite sports of soccer. A recreational church for "The Lions", I'd say would be another interesting way to describe it.

Those ETFE triangular fins on the exterior facade are what give that edifice its distinctive character, more so, that they are recognizable architectural features that visitors can't miss. Thus, it's not a surprise for that iconic landmark to become a proud emblem of Bilbao - signifying the essence of play, fun, and entertainment for the joyous Spaniards who are based there and abroad.

For a day, leave the real cathedrals to teach something that is different and more fun.
