Hispaliterario 9: El Misterioso Caballo del Demonio

— ¡Jipale!

Hispaliterario 9: The Mysterious Demon Horse

— Jipale, the devil's horse,— Eleuterio shouts at the top of his lungs as he rides, a little wildly, on the back of an impressive jet-black horse. Riding bareback, he holds on tightly, but at the same time carefully, to the long mane of the slender animal, which swiftly crosses the vast savannahs of the plain. With the breeze crashing against his face, Eleuterio feels like he is flying, when, as he approaches the place known as El Cruce de las Tres Cruces, he suddenly realizes that he is really in the air. Without even giving him time to understand what is happening, he falls flat on his face and rolls over, tumbling several times on the ground. He quickly gets up and angrily looks for the dark horse that just threw him to the ground, while shaking off the dust and weeds.

— Horse for such a devil! How can you play this trick on me?— Eleuterio says angrily, as he walks to where he thinks the horse is since he hears it whinnying as it walks away. — As soon as I catch you, I'll wring your neck!— he shouts even louder at an invisible horse, which he only hears trotting towards the bonfire of the deceased Ursula, a mysterious and gloomy place, where moments before and without knowing how he met the spirited animal. After walking back for several minutes, the long stretch walking on the horse's back, when approaching the bonfire, he notices that there are Cipriano, Miguel, and Teodoro, who upon seeing him, immediately rebuke him for going alone to this place. The bonfire site was abandoned some years ago when the deceased Ursula, whom they prefer to call this way, simply disappeared and only the four scorched legs of the horse that, days before, she had told everyone she had bought in a nearby town, were found.

— Look Eleuterio, stop coming to this place alone, you could have a terrible time,— says Teodoro as soon as he gets close. Eleuterio, knowing that the trio of cowboys would scold him, immediately answered him:

— Ah well! I'm right behind you, but I didn't want to catch up with you to see if I'd give you a scare,— he smiles mischievously to himself. The three men look at him suspiciously but decide to believe what he tells them.

— Black man! The only thing that could scare us here, is that the deceased Ursula or the horse that owns those legs appears, — mentions Cipriano, pointing to where the scorched legs were hanging. But, surprised, they realize that the legs are no longer in place and when they turn to where Eleuterio is, he appears with a red and burning look, flanked by the slender and now smoking black horse, which snorts steam with the stench of sulfur.

The four men were never heard from again and since then, no one has returned to the campfire to verify if the legs are still hanging there. Although in the town there are those who say that, in the solitude of the plain, on occasions, the cry of Eleuterio can be heard, haranguing the mysterious horse of the devil.

Maravilloso escrito amigo, felicidades.

I wonder what made the horse disappear in the first place and how come they can hear it speak? This is a fictional story and it's not really compulsory you give answers to my questions but one thing is certain, I enjoyed every bit of it, I was so glued to the story because I had so many questions in mind.

Thank you so much for sharing such a great story with us @dreemport, I wish you all the best for your entry.

I wish I could understand the original Spanish, I feel I'm losing something in the translation.

even then, it's a nice tale.

Nice literary story, I found your post thanks to @Dreemport
