Pascal: pensamiento y sentir ante lo infinito | Pascal: thought and feeling in the face of infinity

in OCD3 years ago

After the crises produced by health events, death and emotional blows, Pascal devotes himself to philosophy and theology, from a somewhat heterodox Catholic point of view. Thus, he sets out to write a work that he could not finish, and could only make notes and fragments, loose and disorderly, sporadic, written on papers at hand at the time, which will give rise to the book, published after his death in 1670, an edition that was then improved with the intervention of researchers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book is known under the title of Thoughts.

Pascal is recognized as a distant precedent of the forerunner of 20th century existentialism, since he managed to influence thinkers such as Soren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche, with his questions about existence, God, the meaning of life, etc.

From this book, of dense, wise meditations and of great suggestive power, I want to share some fragments, chosen by applying a hard task of selection because there are many that would be worth spreading.

The heart has reasons that reason does not know.

Reason is very weak if it does not understand that there are many things that surpass it.

When one sees the natural style, one is astonished and enthusiastic, because one expected to see an author, and one finds a man.

As one says poetic beauty, one should also say geometrical beauty and medicinal beauty; but one does not say it; and the reason for this is that one knows well what is the object of geometry, which consists in proofs, and what is the object of medicine, which consists in healing; but one does not know in what consists the grace which is the object of poetry (...)

The same sense changes according to the words that express it. The senses receive their dignity from the words, instead of being given it by them.

In writing my thought sometimes escapes me; but this reminds me of my weakness, which I forget at every moment; which instructs me as much as my forgotten thought, because I only aspire to know my nothingness.

For, after all, what is man in nature? A nothing in front of infinity, an all in front of nothing, a medium between nothing and everything.

All this visible world is but an imperceptible trace in the vast bosom of nature. (...) However much we inflate our concepts beyond the imaginable spaces, we engender nothing but atoms in comparison to the reality of things. **It is an infinite sphere whose center is everywhere and the circumference is none.

It would be daring and inconsiderate of me to pretend to comment on these complex, almost abysmal, thoughts of the wise Pascal in this space. I would only highlight three elements that seem to me capital:

*The critical distance he takes from the almost total power he wanted to give to reason in the incipient modern rationalism (Cartesian, it will be said later), a contradiction he expresses in two key phrases: "spirit of geometry", operative and formalizable, and "spirit of finesse", symbolic, affective and ethical.

*The relativity and ambiguity -both combined with doubt, not methodical, but existential- that would make possible an approach to that spirit, to that feeling of the world far from pride and self-sufficiency, from that nothingness that constitutes our being.

*The awareness of the smallness and finitude that we are before the universe, before the mystery, and that subtends the idea of God, in that metaphor of the sphere, which led the writer Jorge Luis Borges to write that essay entitled "Pascal's Sphere". The philosopher will propose: "I believe that by changing his curiosity into admiration he will be more willing to contemplate them in silence than to investigate them with presumption".
