Realmente no parecía algo tan difícil.

¡Yo extrañaría demasiado a Don Pedro!

veryone knows that in every apartment building there has to be at least one ghost. The building where I live had been built a decade ago and didn't have one yet, so suddenly this ghost was assigned here, in an apartment on the 5th floor.

He just showed up one day, and everyone in the building realized that our ghost was an old man, because he wore glasses -double magnifying glasses-, read the newspaper -especially the local news section-, drank coffee -several times a day- and forgot things, like which of the white sheets was to be tucked in when sleeping, and which of them was the uniform to scare.

In this way, all of us neighbors got to know Don Pedro the ghost little by little.

One day, after finishing his exhausting ghostly chores, Don Pedro felt the need to leave the house for a while, to get some fresh air, buy groceries, and take the white sheets to the laundry.

Don Pedro took his keys for going through walls, his discount coupons in the grocery stores of the afterlife, his waterproof levitating boots -because there was rainy weather-, and left the apartment very determined.

What Don Pedro did not know until that moment was that he had been assigned to a fifth floor apartment, so he suddenly realized that he could not simply open the door and cross the street, but first had to make his way to the ground floor. Still, this was not going to discourage Don Pedro the ghost; he walked determinedly to the elevator and pressed the button to make it come.

Because the apartment building had so many floors -I live on the tenth floor, for example- it took a long time for the elevator to reach the fifth floor, and it was during that time that Don Pedro the Ghost remembered something very important: He has a phobia of elevators!

Don Pedro does not like narrow places, nor automatic doors, much less well-polished mirrors -because in those he never reflects himself, not even in selfies-; therefore, everything that was part of the elevator was simply terrifying for Don Pedro.

So, when the elevator finally opened in front of his allergic nose, he considered all this and froze with fear! His legs turned to jelly -tasteless, of course- his arms bristled like goose bumps, and his white hair ran aghast to hide under his armpits, leaving his head pearly and shaved.

While this stupor was occurring due to Don Pedro's irrational fears, the elevator doors closed again and it left to go up or down to another of the building's many floors. Don Pedro noticed his mistake and regained his senses, trying to think of an alternative way to get to the ground floor.

There were stairs, of course, but like all the older folks, Don Pedro the ghost already had a bit of damage to his knees, so walking down more than a dozen steps was not a viable option for him.

Still, Don Pedro really wanted to get out of the building for a while, if only to feed the birds in the plaza and get some sunshine -for he was looking very pale lately- so he had to concentrate on his goal and be brave; he had to call the elevator, stand his ground, and when the doors opened in front of him, he had to get in and keep calm until it reached the ground floor.

It really didn't seem so difficult. Don Pedro gathered his will and called the elevator one more time.

But it didn't work this time either. Remember I told you that Don Pedro forgot certain things? Well, once he called the elevator again, he got distracted examining the fire extinguisher in the hallway -we believe that Don Pedro once, when he was flesh and blood like you and me, was a great fireman-, and then, he forgot the reasons why he should enter the elevator bravely and at all costs, and once again he froze -as a polaroid photograph- as soon as the doors opened.

The situation happened again and again. Don Pedro the ghost would convince himself to face his fears and go down in the elevator, and then, while waiting for it, he would get distracted and forget about it.

That is how Don Pedro got stuck -perhaps forever- on the fifth floor, in front of the elevator door.

Every day, at all hours, the elevator usually goes to the fifth floor, opens the doors, and then closes them again, with no one getting in or out of the elevator on that floor. But we all know that it is Don Pedro's fault, that he has not yet decided to move to the ground floor in a narrow place, with automatic doors and polished mirrors.

Since that day Don Pedro stopped being a simple ghost of the fifth floor to become our irreplaceable elevator ghost. All of us neighbors meet and greet him every day, and as a result we have gotten to know him and grown fond of him.

A few days ago I met him when I was on my way to my apartment. As usual, despite the fact that I was alone in the elevator, and that I had only pressed the button for the tenth floor, the elevator stopped sooner, on the fifth floor of course. The doors opened and I greeted Don Pedro, said good morning and exchanged with him some complaints about the weather, politics and soccer. The usual! And after that the doors closed once more and the elevator completed its journey.

Sometimes I feel sad for my ghost. Does he realize that he is stuck in this situation, or should I be so kind as to let him know?

Chihuahua.png

On many occasions it has seemed to me that he notices and enjoys it, since he seems to be amused when he sees us going up and down, sometimes in a hurry, sometimes with the groceries, and sometimes with the urge to pee, and instead of letting the door close, he starts asking us how the family is doing, how we are doing at school and what our pets are called. The Chihuahua dog of the lady on the 12th floor always barks at him, and Don Pedro does nothing but reply: "When I was alive I was bitter too!". So I get the impression that he takes advantage of his ghost quality, and because he has infinite time, he has taken it all as a game. But what if that's not the case? What if Don Pedro only talks to us to avoid being sad?

I often think about what would be the best option to help him. Perhaps I could send an e-mail to the office of assignments from the afterlife, and ask them to please move Don Pedro to one of those haunted houses that are at ground level -because there are flying ones too-, or at least to one of those pompous residential complexes that have escalators.

But then I think of how fond I am of my ghost and I find it sad to see him replaced by someone I don't like, who doesn't talk to animals and wasn't a firefighter. I would miss Don Pedro too much!

The only option I can find, so that Don Pedro can leave the building without having to leave forever, is for someone to be so kind as to offer Don Pedro their company in the elevator, from the fifth floor to the ground floor, and talk to him about chess, and about environmental pollution, so that he is distracted and does not get nervous.

The thing is, Don Pedro doesn't trust us enough to feel comfortable enough to get on the elevator. None of the neighbors have yet been able to convince him that it is safe to join the ride.

Coffee.png

But I am not going to give up. Every day I get to know Don Pedro better, and when we become great friends, he will surely agree to go downstairs with me to buy bread, and later on he may even accept an invitation to go up to the tenth floor and share a coffee -without sugar, as he likes it- sitting in front of the TV in my living room.

If that doesn't work, then maybe it is necessary for the right person to move into the building to befriend Don Pedro, someone with whom he feels identified, who also wears glasses and has rain boots, and who also has some strange phobia and likes to hide under the sheets.

And then, only then! Don Pedro the ghost will realize that there is nothing to be afraid of, and he will go up the elevator in the company of that brave friend, and he will be able to go from the town square to the laundry, from the grocery store to the newsstand, and talk about the weather with a new person every day, before returning to the important ghostly work on his fifth floor.

¡Muchas gracias, querida Tribu creativa! 😍❤️

¡Saludos!
