If you want to go a bit beyond the obvious elements of a poem, such as rhymes, metrics, and compositions, you can try using these analytical resources.
1- Investiga la vida y obra del escritor:
Si tienes la oportunidad lee un poco sobre el autor y sus obras. Por lo general los autores tienen una temática particular y si no, un estilo que los identifica. Conocer los datos sociales, artístico-culturales y políticos de la época en la que se escribió el poema puede dar luz a interpretaciones más acertadas.
Investigate the life and work of the writer:
If you have the opportunity, read a little about the author and his works. In general, the authors have a particular theme and if not, a style that identifies them. Knowing the social, artistic-cultural and political data of the time in which the poem was written can give rise to more accurate interpretation.
2- Toma en cuenta el título:
El título es importante para avistar la temática del poema. Si bien es cierto que no es necesariamente la norma, los títulos sirven para ayudarte a tener una idea próxima de lo que te espera en la lectura. No los pases por alto, tienen mucho qué decir.
Keep in mind the title:
The title is important to see the theme of the poem. Although it is true that it is not necessarily the norm, the titles serve to help you to have a close idea of what awaits you in the reading. Don’t overlook them, they have a lot to say.
3- Haz uso del diccionario:
Parece incongruente el uso del diccionario en estos tiempos, sin embargo es una herramienta esencial para el análisis de algunas palabras inusuales, incluso para aquellas que creemos propias, pero no tenemos un significado totalmente ajustado. Como quiera que sea, este recurso, virtual o físico, merece ser usado con toda pertinencia.
Make use of the dictionary:
The use of the dictionary in these times seems incongruous, however it is an essential tool for the analysis of some unusual words, even those that we believe are our own, but we do not have a totally adjusted meaning. However it may be, this resource, virtual or physical, deserves to be used with all pertinence.
4- Revisa cada verso:
Cuando lees el poema completo sin hacer pausas, es seguro que se escapen detalles importantes. Cada verso (cada línea) es preciso para incorporar conceptos y dilucidar señales. Sin embargo, no siempre funciona con cada uno, un verso puede decirte todo o nada. Puedes hacer el análisis por estrofas si te resulta exasperado extraer un significado para cada verso. Busca practicidad.
Check each verse:
When you read the entire poem without pausing, important details are sure to leak out. Each verse (each line) is precise to incorporate concepts and elucidate signs. However, it does not always work with each one, a verse can tell you all or nothing. You can do the stanza analysis if you find it exasperated to extract a meaning for each line. Look for practicality.
5- Advierte recursos literarios:
Las figuras literarias abundan y se usan frecuentemente en poemas escritos en verso. Reconocerlas es un paso importante en la interpretación porque, a pesar de que se pueden usar para dar belleza y armonía, pueden aportar significado e intención. La metáfora es la reina de las figuras, reconócela y descífrala; por lo general es una “traba” cuando se lee de forma textual un poema.
Warn literary resources:
Literary figures abound and are frequently used in poems written in verse. Recognizing them is an important step in interpretation because, although they can be used to give beauty and harmony, they can bring meaning and intention. The metaphor is the queen of figures, recognize it and decipher it; it is usually a "hindrance" when reading a poem verbatim.
6- Evita suposiciones:
La poesía es una forma de expresión abstracta. Por eso es necesario desprenderse de ilusiones o hipótesis predeterminadas para acercarse más objetivamente al mensaje de la obra. Sin embargo, ten presente que una interpretación nunca será completamente acertada, a menos de que puedas entrevistar al autor y peguntarle qué quiso decir, cosa que muy rara vez suele pasar.
Avoid assumptions:
Poetry is a form of abstract expression. That is why it is necessary to get rid of illusions or predetermined hypotheses to get closer to the message of the work more objectively. However, keep in mind that an interpretation will never be completely accurate, unless you can interview the author and ask him what he meant, which is very rarely the case.
7- Aprecia el estilo:
Los poemas pueden ser escritos en prosa o en verso. Cada tipo tiene características propias que te servirán para entenderlo. En todo caso, no desatiendas esas particularidades, pues la idea es disfrutar de la “belleza” o el mensaje que te ofrece el poema.
Appreciate the style:
Poems can be written in prose or verse. Each type has its own characteristics that will help you understand it. In any case, do not neglect these particularities, because the idea is to enjoy the “beauty” or the message that the poem offers you.
Plus: Lee varias veces el poema. Primero en silencio, luego en voz baja, y si tienes oportunidad, léelo en voz alta. Te puede sorprender lo que te dicen las pausas y las entonaciones.
Otro plus: Las palabras tienen un poder sensorial grande y eso es algo que los poetas saben bien. Entonces, los poemas no siempre son rosas, perfumes y adornos. Para no decepcionarte, no asocies siempre la poesía con belleza.
Plus: Read the poem several times. Silently first, then quietly, and if you get a chance, read it out loud. You may be surprised by what the pauses and intonations tell you.
Another plus: Words have great sensory power and that is something that poets know well. So, poems are not always roses, perfumes and ornaments. In order not to be disappointed, do not always associate poetry with beauty.
