«The reader can be considered the main character of the novel, on an equal footing with the author; without him, nothing is done».

THE FAIRIES OF CHILDBIRTH

Many believe them to be children's stories, or conjectured myths of some ancient society, but I know it is all true; I have seen them with my own eyes, they always wear golden pitchers and beautiful dresses. Their size is variable, and, sometimes, they wear long hair of different colors and speak a few words.

My brother never wanted to believe me when I told him I saw fantastic things, he thought they were stories like the ones he read in books or saw in movies. He also assumed a very active imagination on my part, he always believed that I would become a prolific and famous writer.

Nothing like that, I wasn't looking for my stories to be heard by the world, but by the people I cared about. I have only witnessed two births in my life and on both occasions I was able to watch them, staring at me, amazed because I could see them.

I called them "The birthing fairies", because they were invisible women who helped mothers with that beautiful labor. Some looked like old ladies, others looked like little girls even in size. Some were smiling and others wore stern expressions all the time. Some wore bright, flowery dresses, others opaque garments that could hardly be seen. Some played musical instruments for the babies that were born, others only remained inert after the delivery was over; it was difficult to finish describing them, for on both occasions, they always came with different aspects and ideas.

Three of them, the older ones, suffered when they heard the mother giving birth, and all her screams were absorbed to lessen the pain of childbirth. Four of them, the young ones, placed their hands on the mother's abdomen, and smiled and were very happy when the baby was healthy. Six of them; the ones that looked like infants, played songs with drums, tambourines, trombones, double basses and ukuleles, it was as if they were celebrating some natal feast, in which I could not hear any tune.

All this was happening over the doctors and nurses of the place, and they did not notice, because they did not have the same gift that I had. To calm the crying of the newborns, the birthing fairies played an unknown song; one that perhaps every parent in the world would like to have, for it would help calm the children in the wee hours of the morning and on cloudy days.

At the last birth I witnessed; which was that of my niece Valeria, one of them came up to me, she looked like a little girl and played the tambourine in front of me. I of course could not hear her but she would not leave me alone. She started to become a nuisance, I began to believe she was looking for me to say something. And as I realized, while I was trying to ignore her, another fairy came up and started playing her instrument.

The two of them had me annoyed, "Don't they have a delivery to attend to?" was what I thought. I wanted to get up and leave but then I caught a glimpse of my brother rushing to the delivery room urgently. I heard a cry briefly, then I didn't hear it anymore. I looked back and the fairies stopped bothering me. They stood next to Valeria and my sister-in-law and began to play their unfathomable music.

I wasn't even upset, I felt happy, I told my brother that there was a big party next to my niece, but as usual, he didn't believe me, and gave me a hug to comfort his joy with me.

Some time passed and my sister-in-law became pregnant again. Valeria was already five years old. I wanted to surprise her by telling her about the birthing fairies, but my whole plan fell apart. She pointed to the delivery room firmly, and told me, there were weirdly dressed women completely surrounding her mom.
