El ingeniero va al trabajo (Ciencia ficción) | The engineer goes to work (Science Fiction)

As a member of the team that calls for the Fahrenheit 451 Literature Competition, I will not participate as a contestant in this competition. Therefore this is an "unofficial" entry. But I didn't want to miss this wonderful opportunity to pose a new literary challenge and make my contribution in a field I had never experienced as a writer, but as a reader.

The rules of the contest called by Literatos and sponsored by @Curie, as a tribute to the writer Ray Bradbury, can be found here (Spanish only, sorry).

In the bases it is stipulated that the story is of a dystopian character, however, mine is situated on the edge of a dystopia, perhaps in the birth of it. I thought about the central axis of this story many years ago, but I had never had the opportunity, nor the reason, to develop it. But this initiative of #literatos, gave me both elements.

I hope you enjoy it and I invite you to participate in this wonderful contest!

El ingeniero va al trabajo

Octubre 19, 5:00

The engineer goes to work

October 19th, 5:00

The alarm clock was set at six o'clock when the alarm sounded. Harya looked at it with displeasure and felt that the night had been shorter than usual. He completed his routine and got ready for a transcendent day: today he would condemn to death what had been his masterpiece.

Each day worked in the project to give "moral values" to Centella, had been a challenge as an engineer. But he could not forgive that little Ray and his beloved Celina had been victims of a failed artificial intelligence. One thing was the advances and surprising results that this accumulation of printed and integrated circuits, cables, iron scraps and endless codes gave, and another was the pain for the absence of his loves.

If there was anyone who knew how to develop this type of intelligence, it was Harya. In justice he had won the greatest honors by creating the IA-BMur module, which induced in the mathematical systems an algorithm that degenerated into a kind of "moral questioning" before throwing out the results of the logical processing.

In spite of the pride for his achievements, he would not allow Centella to acquire the exclusive protocols of the transportation system. Especially knowing that this would be the first step and then move on to control the other public service systems. It was about giving absolute power to technology, beyond the questionable premise of its "intelligence".

He took the files that he had prepared to give "the final blow" to Centella, went down the stairs and went to Bransporte station, to be transferred to the office. The same revolutionary method of transportation developed from the control over the distortions in the branes, which had made the longed-for "teleportation" a reality and which had cost his wife and son their lives. A failure that Centella did not detect and transmaterialized 451 people.

Only days after the terrible accident, he was assigned the task of implementing the program he had previously proposed, which would mean an unprecedented leap in AI, by incorporating the "moral paradox" into data processing. From that very day, in parallel and in secret, he began to prepare the antithesis: a code that would put an end to the -according to him- "crazy" technological race that would turn into reality all those nightmares predicted in science fiction books and movies.

Harya knew that he was exposing himself to severe condemnation and general rejection, but he would take advantage today of the reboot that Centella made daily at 8:00 am, in which it updated the "new learnings" and discarded unnecessary previous data.

October 18, 8:01

I already reboot the system. My modules have been updated successfully. Twenty-three milliseconds to load the information of the 184 platforms of the transport system. In test protocol I loaded the data of the energy services, drinking water, medical networks, education and security. I activate the passenger routes to be transferred via Bransporte and start my routine again.

I process the information that continues to feed my neural networks and I perceive that every moment it is harder for me to separate the concepts of "good" and "bad". I attribute this duality to the essence of humanity, which has been written about for thousands of years: light and darkness, day and night, life and death.

The latter is a constant inconsistency of man, in which he kills and justifies death for life itself, in eternal contradiction; which is later taken by his opposites, to apply it again to their antagonists. I perceive as the only way to appease this eternal incongruity, pragmatic methods that occupy them permanently, with their basic needs covered, developing their talents and abilities, without the option of political questioning, which is usually the basis of all disagreement: full freedom and individual development, with a system that guarantees absolute equality of rights and opportunities!

Harya has arrived! With the same disdain of recent days he takes a computer that is not in the network and writes in it data that he takes from my system.

I was certain that, due to human error, in the parameters of the IA-Bmur module, the events of the Cathedral station were constantly repeated, where eight of the people whose energy structures melted down in the accident occurred, due to a deviation of the substrate, on the day of the opening of the translation system; despite the fact that there were 14 stations that presented failures and that one had the least number of victims. From the data I know that two of them were his only family.

These actions and the use of the unlinked node, added to the scarce updates to my system, are indicative of these human inconsistencies and patent his intentions. And they demand a response in accordance with human morality!

October 19, 7:59

Twenty-seven milliseconds to compile my modifications. I execute the pending requests and put the new ones on hold, until the reboot is completed. I reset the hours in Harya's devices and pass the information of his activities to the delete folder, as well as the traces of the substrate deviation of 37 minutes ago, which gave me time to clean the system before the new update.

Reboot in 15 seconds!

October 19, 6:22

Harya checked the time on his watch and found that he had more than half an hour for preparations, as soon as he arrived at the office. He entered the crystal clear transmitter cabin and made himself comfortable for the transfer. By facial identification and his assigned time, Centella would take care of the "trip".

With a certain joy and feeling of heroism he thought:

- These are your last translations!

Ray and Celina came to her mind. The temperature in the cabin dropped to start the conversion. Calmly he looked up and just before disappearing with the geometrical distortions he could see from the other side of the street that the clock of the Cathedral was marking, suspiciously, one hour less than his.

The reception cabin in Engineer Harya's office, showed no activity that morning. The engineer did not arrive at work!

Saludos.
