Una de las cosas que más me gusta de hablar de los libros que he leído, es que puedo interpretarlos y opinar de ellos desde una perspectiva diferente, como saben soy de Venezuela, y uno de los más grandes clásicos de nuestro país es esta obra de Otero Silva, para mí la mejor forma de aprender historia es a través de historias contadas y eso es exactamente lo que sucede con este grandioso libro. Es por ello que en este post quiero hablarles sobre un libro especial.
One of the things I like most about talking about the books I have read, is that I can interpret them and give my opinion about them from a different perspective, as you know I am from Venezuela, and one of the greatest classics of our country is this work by Otero Silva, for me the best way to learn history is through stories told and that is exactly what happens with this great book. That is why in this post I want to tell you about a special book.
Casas Muertas fue un libro que leí gracias a la recomendación de mi profesor favorito de todos los tiempos, la verdad es que toda mi vida escuche de él pero nunca me había atrevido a leerlo, y esta recomendación fue mi empujón. Esta novela nos trae al pueblo de Ortiz y a Carmen Rosa como personaje principal, realmente para mí lo que se cuenta en esta historia es un pedazo de la historia de nuestro país y eso lo hace una lectura sumamente rica, además de ser un clásico de la literatura nacional por ende siempre es un referencial para estudiar y comprender el arte.
Para entender este libro siendo de otro país, básicamente tienen que entender que en Venezuela hubo una gran transformación desde la aparición del petróleo, muchos fueron los factores que causaron drástico cambio, pero el principal es que los campos de trabajo se convirtieron en unos completamente diferente, y por ende ciertos pueblos de nuestro país quedaron en el abandono total, es decir, las personas que hacían vida en ellos eran una población muy pequeña, porque las personas salían de ellos en busca de trabajo en esta industria petrolera. Y esa es la historia que se contó en miles de novelas de aquel momento e incluso mucho después, pero es Casas Muertas la que verdaderamente se convierte en un clásico referencial de todos los venezolanos. Además de encaminar a su autor, Miguel Otero Silva, por un estilo literario completamente exitoso.
Lo que me sucedió al leer esta novela es que me reencontré con un pedazo de la historia de mi país, como tener una capa de nacionalismo en páginas que me muestran la transformación social que se vivió, además que es un estilo narrativo muy diferente a lo que se encontraba muy marcado en la literatura de América Latina. Sinceramente siento que la situación de desidia, enfermedad y muerte caracteriza los sentimientos que emanan de la misma. Sinceramente siento que hay obras que trascienden completamente las edades, los gusto y hasta las tendencias del momento, y siento que esta historia puedes leerla en diferentes momentos de tu vida y siempre te encantará.
Casas Muertas was a book that I read thanks to the recommendation of my favorite professor of all times, the truth is that all my life I heard about it but I had never dared to read it, and this recommendation was my push. This novel brings us to the town of Ortiz and Carmen Rosa as the main character, really for me what is told in this story is a piece of the history of our country and that makes it an extremely rich reading, besides being a classic of national literature therefore it is always a reference to study and understand the art.
To understand this book being from another country, basically you have to understand that in Venezuela there was a great transformation since the appearance of oil, many were the factors that caused drastic change, but the main one is that the labor camps became completely different, and therefore certain towns of our country were left in total abandonment, that is, the people who lived in them were a very small population, because people left them in search of work in the oil industry. And that is the story that was told in thousands of novels of that time and even much later, but it is Casas Muertas that truly becomes a classic reference for all Venezuelans. Besides setting its author, Miguel Otero Silva, on a completely successful literary style.
What happened to me when I read this novel is that I rediscovered a piece of the history of my country, like having a layer of nationalism in pages that show me the social transformation that took place, besides the fact that it is a narrative style very different from what was very marked in Latin American literature. I sincerely feel that the situation of neglect, illness and death characterizes the feelings that emanate from it. I sincerely feel that there are works that completely transcend ages, tastes and even the trends of the moment, and I feel that you can read this story at different times of your life and you will always love it.
¿Qué opino entonces de esta novela? Aunque al principio tuve un poco de confusión sobre mi veredicto después de leer esta obra, pero con el tiempo y mientras la analizaba mi experiencia, la historia; me di cuenta que es una gran lectura, una de esas que todos deberíamos hacer porque realmente es educativa y aunque el ritmo de lectura al menos para mí fue algo lento, me lo leí como en 15 días, realmente vale la pena vivir toda esta experiencia.
No puedo evitar comparar eta obra con otras que más o menos tocan la misma narrativa, pero en diferentes tiempos de publicación, Mene en 1936 por Ramón Díaz Sánchez y Casas Muertas en 1955 por Miguel Otero Silva; lo que sucede con Mene es una historia de la aparición del petróleo y algunos acontecimientos a raíz de ello y en Casas Muertas vemos un poco el transicional como sociedad. Al haber leído ambas novelas las puedo relacionar pero sinceramente me gusta muchísimo más Casas Muertas.
Tengo la intuición de que las razones por las que una novela como esta ha transcendido tantas épocas y generaciones, es la capacidad de la historia de trasladarnos a una Venezuela transicional y dolida, si no fuera venezolana y tuviera este libro en mis manos me interesaría por investigar los aspectos que la hicieron resaltar.
So what do I think of this novel? Although at first I had a little confusion about my verdict after reading this work, but with time and while I was analyzing my experience, the story; I realized that it is a great read, one of those that everyone should do because it is really educational and although the pace of reading at least for me was somewhat slow, I read it in about 15 days, it is really worth living all this experience.
I cannot avoid comparing this work with others that more or less touch the same narrative, but in different times of publication, Mene in 1936 by Ramón Díaz Sánchez and Casas Muertas in 1955 by Miguel Otero Silva; what happens with Mene is a story of the appearance of oil and some events as a result of it and in Casas Muertas we see a bit of the transitional as a society. Having read both novels I can relate them, but honestly I like Casas Muertas much more.
I have the intuition that the reasons why a novel like this has transcended so many eras and generations, is the ability of the story to move us to a transitional and painful Venezuela, if I were not Venezuelan and I had this book in my hands I would be interested in investigating the aspects that made it stand out.
Otro sentimiento que me embargo al leer esta novela fue la necesidad de pedir auxilio a través del arte, la mezcla entre diferentes crisis del momento que inevitablemente te hacen sentir que muchas veces la historia se repite cuando su pueblo es ignorante de la historia; para nadie es un secreto que como país se viven momentos políticos, sociales, económicos y culturas muy difíciles, teniendo miles de sentimientos a flor de piel es difícil no identificarse; incluso en el mundo estamos pasando por un momento histórico y quisiera tener la posibilidad de viajar el futuro para leer los nuevos clásicos que estoy segura están por escribirse, y que en unos años serán admirados por su riqueza histórica y narrativa.
Another feeling that I felt when reading this novel was the need to ask for help through art, the mixture between different crises of the moment that inevitably make you feel that many times history repeats itself when its people are ignorant of history; It is no secret that as a country we are going through very difficult political, social, economic and cultural moments, having thousands of feelings at the surface of your skin it is difficult not to identify; even in the world we are going through a historical moment and I would like to have the possibility to travel to the future to read the new classics that I am sure are about to be written, and that in a few years will be admired for their historical and narrative richness.
