What's up, Hivers readers. One of the most iconic and interesting books of the great writer "José Saramágo" is his book "El Hombre Duplicado" which left me an incredible experience as a reader because of the way Saramágo wrote this work. The truth is that I came to look for this book for having seen a movie titled in English "Enemy" based on this book, being this a very good adaptation that left me hooked with certain paranoias around and reading the book captivated me enormously, really a book that captivates from the beginning as well as the movie.

Uno de los libros más icónicos e interesantes del gran escritor “José Saramágo” es su libro “El Hombre Duplicado” el cual me dejó una increíble experiencia como lector por la forma de escritura que saramágo le dio a esta obra. Lo cierto es que llegue a buscar este libro por haber visto una película titulada en inglés “Enemy” basada en este libro, siendo esta una muy buena adaptación que me dejó enganchado con ciertas paranoias alrededor y leer el libro me cautivó enormemente, realmente un libro que cautiva desde un principio así como la película.

"The Duplicate Man" deals (according to my perspective) with a severe personality disorder or two people exactly alike, but with different attitudes, personality and priorities that live in the same physical structure, leading totally different lives, these being alien to each other where they do not become aware until an event occurs that is the turning point of the story. Tertuliano Máximo, is a high school teacher to whom a classmate recommends a movie and when he sees it he notices that one of the characters is exactly like him; this unleashes a series of events that develop and then the inevitable encounter between Tertuliano and Antonio Claro, who are the protagonists of this story. As the reading progresses we find three women who are fundamental in this story and who are the pieces that unite this puzzle of doubts and confusions, which are Tertuliano's wife, Antonio's wife and mother. Where the obsession of one of the wives leads to unleash certain catastrophic events. 1. What is the story about? 2. Pace of the story 3. What is the central point of the book? Each page of the book takes you into a spiral of uncertainty that if you don't pay attention and concentrate you will get lost because of the curious way Saramago makes use of punctuation rules in this book, confusing, perhaps, the situation.
“El Hombre Duplicado” trata (Según mi perspectiva) de un trastorno severo de personalidad o de dos personas exactamente iguales, pero con distintas actitudes, personalidad y prioridades que habitan en una misma estructura física, llevando vidas totalmente distintas, siendo estas ajenas una de otra donde no toman conciencia hasta que ocurre un hecho que es el punto de inflexión de la historia. Tertuliano Máximo, es un maestro de secundaria al cual un compañero de la facultad le recomienda una película y al verla nota que uno de los personajes es exactamente igual a él; esto desata una serie de eventos que se desarrollan para luego se produzca el inevitable encuentro de tertuliano con Antonio Claro quiénes son los protagonistas de esta historia. A medida que se va avanzando en la lectura encontramos tres mujeres que son fundamentales en esta historia y que son las piezas que van uniendo este rompecabezas de dudas y confusiones, que son la esposa de Tertuliano, la esposa de Antonio y la madre. Donde la obsesión de una de las esposas lleva a desatar ciertos eventos catastróficos. Dentro de la historia destacaré tres cosas: 1. ¿De qué trata la historia? 2. Ritmo de la historia 3. ¿Cuál es el punto central del libro? Cada página del libro te va llevando en una espiral de incertidumbre que si no tomas atención y concentración te perderás por la forma tan curiosa en como Saramago hace uso de las reglas de puntuación en este libro, confundiendo, tal vez, la situación.
1. What is the story about?
The book deals with some behavioral disorder, which is obvious to consider severe because of how the protagonists are totally alien to each other, Tertuliano being a high school teacher and Antonio an actor, with very different lives and opposite personalities. Each of them has a really different life structure and tastes, but as we move forward we are given a lot of distractions that if we do not have insight, we will fall into the trap that Saramago himself places to divert attention from the keys that will give us the clear tools to understand the situation, but despite this he leaves us an open interpretation for those who read it.
El libro trata de algún trastorno de la conducta, que es obvio considerar que es severo por como los protagonistas son totalmente ajenos uno al otro, siendo Tertuliano un profesor de secundaria y Antonio un actor, con vidas muy distintas y con personalidades opuestas. Cada uno de ellos tiene una estructura de vida y gustos realmente distintos, pero a medida que avanzamos nos dan una gran cantidad de distracciones que si no tenemos perspicacia, caeremos en la trampa que el mismo Saramago coloca para desviar la atención de las claves que nos darán las herramientas claras para entender la situación, pero a pesar de esto nos deja una interpretación abierta para quien lo lee.
2. The rhythm of the Book
The rhythm is constant, it goes with a precision of details of everything that happens, which gives us the key to understand what happens, but with a lot of "bread and circuses" that diverts and distracts, but we must not fall asleep before the seduction of the writing but so we fall asleep and lose the central thread. It must be said that the book goes steadily with certain quick jumps that must be grasped.
El ritmo es constante, pasa con una precisión de detalles de todo lo que va ocurriendo, lo que nos da la llave para entender lo que ocurre, pero con mucho “pan y circo” que desvía y distrae, pero no debemos dormirnos ante la seducción de la escritura pero así nos dormimos y perdemos el hilo central. Cabe decir que el libro va constante con ciertos saltos veloces que hay que captar.
3. What is the central point of the book?
The central point of this story depends on how you perceive the book, in some case, you may see two men who meet and notice that they are identical or two men who by circumstances investigate each other and unleash certain events, where women play a fundamental role. Maria and Helena, Maria the professor's girlfriend and Helena the actor's wife, in this one becomes obsessed with the other, unleashing important events in the development of the story. It is always important not to get lost between paragraphs and to keep good concentration, otherwise you will get lost in "Bread and Circus".
El punto central de esta historia depende de cómo percibas el libro, en algún caso, puede que veas a dos hombres que se encuentran y notan que son idénticos o dos hombres que por circunstancias se investigan el uno al otro y desatan ciertos hechos, donde las mujeres juegan un papel fundamental. María y Helena, María la novia del profesor y helena la esposa del actor, en esto una se obsesiona con el otro, desatando eventos importantes en el desarrollo de la historia. Es siempre importante no perderte entre párrafos y que se mantenga buena concentración, porque si no, te perderás en “El pan y circo”.
