To talk about how I see libraries in the next 10 years, I will talk about libraries at a general view around the world, because due to the critical panorama that my country is going through, the future of libraries seems quite decadent, and I want to tell positive things.

I think that even when the digital era has forged new habits in the people, reading and the love for a good book has not been lost. Although the new generations are highly influenced by technology, I do not believe that this is a factor that takes them away from reading habits; in any case, the responsibility would fall on the educational systems and family education.

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) increasingly makes available new tools for reading, and allows people to find their most wanted books in digital format just a click away.

Therefore, I think the first step in the evolution of libraries is related to how to offer content in a highly accessible environment. Libraries will have a database from which it will be possible to download the digital version of each book. They could implement devices like the Kindle of free use in place, or certainly much more advanced devices in which you can access that library database and choose the book of your choice. I think this is the closest change to happen, maybe it already happened, I just don’t know how are libraries in developed countries, in my country the libraries I know are still traditional with shelves of books and machines to make copies.

However, I think that the library model we know today may disappear over the years, it could cease to be just a lender of books and become a source of experiences for knowledge. In this way we would be participants in virtual reality programs developed by each library, in which for example a group of school children could immerse themselves in historical events, and witness a recreation of the events as if they were in the place through virtual reality glasses and where a guide will explain and clarify their doubts.

It would be something similar to a video game, or like entering the Matrix or the animus in Assassin’s Creed, and witnessing certain events, or even being the protagonists of historical events. Libraries could also work on teaching programs about subjects other than history such as biology and medicine, and we could witness, for example, surgical cuts of an organ, or even carry them out virtually.

I believe that libraries will undergo an imminent transformation, and will adapt and take advantage of technological advances, but if I am sure of one thing, it is that millennia may pass and physical books will continue to have the same value for humanity.

This would be cool! I don't think I've visited any library like this. I wonder if there's one already.

Yes, it would be cool, that's a feature that makes sense to me in a world trying to expand knowledge through tecnology. i remember Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia included the feature to explore relevant places virtually, like the Colisseum in Roma and i'm talking about 20 years ago. I think in the future we wil see amazing things, and libraries could be a place for it. Thanks for your comment.

Excellent post. I agree with you that the habit of reading has not been lost but it is manifested in another way.

For example the ebooks. It is true that the feeling of having the book in your hands, to feel the smell of paper mixed with ink is unmistakable and at the same time unique but the paper is gradually disappearing and we must get used to it.

The important thing is not to lose the habit of reading.

Greetings, good weekend and good luck in the contest @ismaelgranados.

Thank you very much, you are right maybe the books in paper will be more exclusive in the future, the most important is to keep the habits of reading as well as to promote the habits through technology. Greetings

You are right...it could become a source of knowledge. The fact remains that digital is taking over and our libraries should be more of digitals to just picking up books.

i'm agree, all institutions will carry out and adaption to tecnologies in order to keep alive, and public libraries wil find its way to enhance knowledge and services. thank for the comment

Excellent post....is true little by little the characteristics of a library are changing. I hope we can keep some classic books to teach future generations the experience of physically reading a book...thanks for sharing your future vision of libraries.
