Hi friends, good vibes to all.
Photo of my property!
We have reached the third book I have by the great Gabriel García Márquez, The General in his Labyrinth. Coincidentally, it falls just in time with respect to the birthday of Simon Bolivar which was two days ago, July 24. But why do I talk about Bolivar? - Well, because this book talks about the last days or months of the Liberator as told by one of his most faithful subjects, José Palacios.
As I said I only own three copies of this Nobel Prize but the truth is that I plan to get more because having reread them has made me realize what a great writer he is and therefore how necessary it is to read and know his literary work. They may not go with my tastes when it comes to choosing a book but without a doubt and just for a general culture issue I am willing to read at least the most important ones. Let's go then and talk a little bit about this title.
Resumen // Summary.
As I mentioned before, this is a novel whose protagonist is Bolivar and it is set precisely in his last months when he decides to embark on what would be his last journey across the Magdalena River, but without realizing how hard and difficult that journey would be for the general. The interesting thing about this story told in third person is that it shows us things and very striking facts about the Liberator, such as the unusual way in which he meditated in his bathtub, the delusions he had due to his illness, among other things.
In the middle of this journey we can notice a physical and psychological collapse of Bolivar, since these were times when he was not as acclaimed by the people as he had been in the past. There is a passage in the story where a town arrives and its inhabitants boo and insult him to the point that in the midst of all that pain and humiliation Bolivar questions everything he did as he pursued a dream of a united America that clearly did not exist at that time.
So we are before a novel that focuses mainly on the memories of battles, joys and loves that filled the life of the Liberator; where the struggle to liberate America was the only engine that moved him along with the formation of a great united country. All this to make us the contrast of that Bolivar with the one of his last days, a person in decadence because of an illness and because of the social disenchantment.
- Opinion.
Having read this novel I realized that we are facing a much more human vision of the Liberator, that is, here we will not see the strong-willed general who fought in hundreds of battlefields, no; we will see a more vulnerable and heartfelt Bolivar who spent his last days in a deep loneliness.
It is a book that is aimed at those people who like historical stories and know in depth about the history that is not told in conventional books. We have the conviction that Bolivar was a hard man and to imagine that he was so vulnerable is often unthinkable, but this story masterfully done by García Márquez changes our perspective and allows us to see the character under the pedestal.
In conclusion, this is one of García Márquez's lesser-known works, but perhaps one that should be read if you are a lover of history, culture or if your curiosity simply invites you to learn a little more about the man who was Simón Bolívar. Easy to read because the author does it that way, with real and fictitious stories that will help us to have a better vision and panorama of that trip that turned out to be the last of the Liberator.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos leemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it and that you are encouraged to read this historical piece of our past.
¡A hug to all, see you next time!
Saludos
