You're absolutely right: in movies, the monster is what they show you, but in a book, your mind creates the most terrifying version possible for yourself. Also, I think it's great that you decided to step outside your romance comfort zone. Sometimes those literary "palate cleansers" are necessary, even if they leave you feeling a bit chilled. That atmosphere you describe with the coffee sounds incredibly cozy, even though it contrasts with the horror of the stories.
