We live in a modernised age where people all over the world take their freedom seriously and guard it well, including the freedom of whether or not to tie the nuptial knot.

When I got this book recommendation in my GoodReads inbox, I wondered whether the author of this book ranted against the marriage institution. At least, that's what anyone would think upon seeing the cover of this book. But then, you know the English idiom - do not judge a book by its cover.

I'm afraid I judged this one already and was curious to read what the author had to say against the institution. Turns out it was not so. I realised the book is fiction. I immediately delved into it.

F*ck Marriage is a new adult fiction of about 306 pages long, first published on May 15, 2019. This captivating book focused on the main protagonist, Billie Tarrow whose husband left her for another woman, Pearl who was also her colleague at work. Imagine losing a husband to a work colleague. It won't be a pleasant thing and the workplace would become toxic in no time.

Due to the humiliating and heartbreaking situation, Billie resigned from work and moved away from her family home in Port Townsend, New York for two years.

The relationships in this book circled the workplace and paced through different timelines. The book talked about the past where Billie and her husband, Woods were the loving couple, then to the heartbreak and divorce to Billie's return after two years.

When Billie returned to her home town again, she assumed a new name, Wendy and possibly a new identity. She met up with her best friend and boss, Satcher Gable who had always carried a torch for her.

I was on the edge of my seat, totally captivated with this book as Satcher hires Billie/Wendy to come back and work for him while he stays a silent partner. Working for Satcher meant working with Pearl who was pregnant at the time to her ex-husband, Woods. It seemed the life of pain, heartbreak and humiliation that Billie/Wendy thought she ran away from was very much still around.

Due to Pearl's presence in Satcher's workplace, Billie/Wendy had no choice but to face Woods almost daily. Billie/Wendy became determined to hurt her ex-husband and Pearl as payback for her heartache and pain.

To properly execute her revenge goal, Billie/Wendy enlists Satcher's help to pretend to be in a relationship with her. Satcher was only glad to do so if it would get her to acknowledge his feelings and forget about Woods. Certain shocking revelations came to light that almost thwarted the plan. Did the revenge plans work out? Well, you will have to read this book and find out.

All I can say in summary is that Billie/Wendy is a messed up case, emotionally and her return after two years turned all the characters' lives upside down.

The whole story is thrilling with many plot twists. I finished the book within two days. The characters in this book showed that though things were not perfect, it was up to them to make it perfect. I think my favourite new author is now Tarryn Fisher!
