Hello friends, today I want to share with you my impressions about this wonderful biography written by the British Gerald Martin. I remember several years ago I was with my sister in a popular shopping mall in our city for a book fair that was there, however after being disappointed for not finding anything especially interesting for us there, we decided to go into my favourite bookstore and that's when I came across this gem, the biography of Gabriel García Márquez, nothing more and nothing less than my favourite Latin American writer, but not only that, but it was incredibly cheap, so I did not hesitate to buy it, it is also a quite extensive and complete book, check out how thick it is.
Hola amigos, hoy quiero compartir con ustedes mis impresiones acerca de esta maravillosa biografía escrita por el británico Gerald Martin. Recuerdo que hace varios años yo estaba con mi hermana en un popular centro comercial de nuestra ciudad a propósito de una feria del libro que había en ese lugar, sin embargo luego de decepcionarnos por no encontrar nada especialmente interesante para nosotras allí, decidimos entrar en mi librería favorita y fue cuando me encontré con esta joya, la biografía de Gabriel García Márquez, nada más y nada menos que mi escritor latinoamericano favorito, pero no solo eso, sino que estaba increíblemente barata, así que no dudé en comprarla, además es un libro bastante extenso y completo, comprueben el grosor que tiene.
Imagine the emotion I felt when I saw that I had at my fingertips part of the life of the greatest exponent of magical realism in Latin America. When I opened the book and began to read about the author, Gerald Martin, I realised that he is as much a fan of García Márquez as I am and has always dedicated himself to studying his life and Latin American culture in general. He is a man of the world, extremely cultured and open-minded, so he did his job very well, conducting more than 300 interviews with many of Márquez's friends and even with himself.
Imagínense la emoción que sentí al ver que tenía al alcance de mi mano parte de la vida del mayor exponente del realismo mágico en América Latina. Al abrir el libro y comenzar a leer sobre el autor, Gerald Martin, me di cuenta de que es tan fan de García Márquez como yo y desde siempre se dedicó a estudiar su vida y la cultura latinoamericana en general, es un hombre de mundo, extremadamente culto y de mente abierta, así que hizo muy bien su trabajo, realizó más de trecientas entrevistas a muchos amigos de Márquez e inclusive a él mismo.
Gerald Martin worked for sixteen years on this book, which is why I was so moved by what García Márquez himself said after learning of Martin's work: "Every principled writer should have an English biographer".
Gerald Martín trabajó durante dieciséis años en la elaboración de esta obra, por eso me conmovió mucho lo que el propio García Márquez dijo después de conocer el trabajo de Martin: "Todo escritor con principios debería tener un biógrafo inglés"
What I like most about Martin is his narration, when you open the biography you find García Márquez's life as if it were one of his novels, we learn about his life from before his birth, when the future writer's grandparents were opposed to his parents' relationship, and halfway through the book we find a collection of photographs that represent a walk through various stages of his life, there are even photographs of the village where he lived and also photographs of his family.
Lo que más me gusta de Martin es su narración, al abrir la biografía te encuentras con la vida de García Márquez como si se tratara de una de sus novelas, conocemos su vida desde antes de su nacimiento, cuando los abuelos del futuro escritor se oponían a la relación de sus padres, y a mitad del libro encontramos una colección de fotografías que representan un paseo por varias etapas de su vida, hay incluso fotografías del pueblo donde vivía y también fotografías de su familia.
I was thrilled to see the photograph of the glorious moment when Márquez was receiving the Nobel Prize for literature in Stockholm in 1982, as King Carl XVI Gustaf Gustaf applauds.
Me sentí muy emocionada al ver la fotografía del glorioso momento en que Márquez estaba recibiendo el premio Nobel de literatura en Estocolmo en 1982, mientras el rey Carlos Gustavo XVI aplaude.
I also found some family trees of both Gabo (Gabriel García Márquez) and his wife, which helps us not to get lost among so many names.
También encontré algunos árboles genealógicos tanto del Gabo (Gabriel García Márquez) como de su esposa, lo cual nos ayuda a no perdernos entre tantos y tantos nombres.
One of the most interesting discoveries I was able to make in this book was the fact that El Gabo effectively used the personalities and even the names of several members of his family to create his own characters, for example Colonel Aureliano Buendía has the personality of Gabo's grandfather, Colonel Nicolás R Márquez, however the way Colonel Márquez died was the same way El Gabo gave his character Doctor Juvenal Urbino in his novel "Love in the Time of Cholera". He was very fond of using elements of his family and his environment in his novels, which brought a lot of realism to his narration, for that reason, years later they decided to change the name of the town where El Gabo was born, so it stopped being called "Aracataca" and started to be called "Macondo" like the town in his most famous novel "One Hundred Years of Solitude".
Uno de los descubrimientos más interesantes que pude comprobar en este libro fue el hecho de que El Gabo efectivamente usó las personalidades y hasta los nombres de varios miembros de su familia para crear a sus propios personajes, por ejemplo el Coronel Aureliano Buendía tiene la personalidad del abuelo del Gabo, El coronel Nicolás R Márquez, sin embargo la forma en que murió el coronel Márquez fue la misma que El Gabo le dio a su personaje el Doctor Juvenal Urbino en su novela "El Amor en Tiempos de Cólera". A él le gustaba muchisimo usar elementos de su familia y de su entorno para sus novelas, lo que le aportaba mucho realismo a su narración, por esa razón, años más tardes decicidieron cambiarle el nombre al pueblo donde El Gabo nació, así que dejó de llamarse "Aracataca" y empezó a llamarse "Macondo" como el pueblo de su novela más famosa "Cien Años de Soledad".
The best thing about this biography was that it allowed me to know in depth my favourite author, how was his life while he was writing his most famous works, for example I learned that he was working as a journalist in a very famous newspaper in my country when the dictatorship of president Pérez Jiménez fell, I also read that El Gabo and his wife Mercedes were living in Mexico when he was writing "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and that he practically confined himself to have a greater concentration at the time of writing, they had almost no money and therefore had to pawn many of their belongings to send the manuscript of the novel to Argentina, where the publisher was, they did it under the uncertainty that it would not be successful, but as we all know, fortunately this novel is considered one of the author's best and one of his most cherished icons, in fact it is my favourite.
Lo mejor de esta biografía fue que me permitió conocer a fondo a mi autor favorito, como fue su vida mientras escribía sus obras más famosas, por ejemplo supe que él trabajaba como periodista en un diario muy famoso en mi país cuando la dictadura del presidente Pérez Jiménez cayó, también leí que El Gabo y su esposa Mercedes vivían em México cuando él estaba escribiendo "Cien Años de Soledad" y que prácticamente él se auto confinó para tener una mayor concentración al momento de escribir, casi no tenían dinero y por lo tanto tuvieron que empeñar muchas de sus pertenencias para enviar el manuscrito de la novela hacia Argentina, donde estaba la editorial, lo hicieron bajo la incertidumbre de que no tuviera éxito, pero como todos sabemos, afortunadamente esta novela es considerada como una de las mejores del autor y uno de sus íconos más preciados, de hecho es mi favorita.
