SIPNOSIS
Gabriel García Márquez te lleva a un viaje a través de un amor que deberá enfrentarse a las diferencias sociales, la distancia y el tiempo, pero que sigue latiendo en los corazones de nuestros personajes principales. TRAMA
La historia empieza un poco agitada siendo la muerte la protagonista con el suicidio por parte de Jeremiah de Saint-Amour, un buen amigo del doctor Juvenal Urbino, médico del pueblo, en razón que no deseaba tocar la inevitable vejez y deterioro del cuerpo; irónicamente, pocos días después del suceso, el doctor sufre un accidente en una escalera donde terminó falleciendo al instante.
Pero esto no es lo que trata la historia, es solo un abrebocas al pequeño universo dentro del libro y sus personajes.
PLOT
The story starts off a bit hectic with death being the protagonist with the suicide of Jeremiah de Saint-Amour, a good friend of Dr. Juvenal Urbino, the town doctor, because he did not want to touch the inevitable old age and deterioration of the body; ironically, a few days after the event, the doctor suffers an accident on a staircase where he ends up dying instantly.
But this is not what the story is about, it is just a glimpse into the small universe within the book and its characters.
Gabriel García Márquez nos relata la historia de un triángulo amoroso (o algo así) entre Florentino Ariza, Ferminia Daza y Juvenal Urbino. Tras el fallecimiento de este último, Florentino Ariza se presenta en casa de la viuda del doctor Urbino, donde le declara su amor y como lleva esperando por ella más de medio siglo. Fermina, muy molesta e indignada lo corre de su casa y le pide que no se vuelva a aparecer. ¿Florentino seguirá persistiendo pese a las palabras de Fermina?
Tras este acontecimiento, hacemos un viaje 50 años atrás, esta vez nos sumergimos en la época en la que Fermina y Florentino eran unos niños, descubriremos cómo se conocieron y la pequeña relación que empezaron a conformar en base a la correspondencia que se enviaban en secreto. El padre de Fermina se entera de este suceso y decide enviarla con unos familiares en razón que se olvide del muchacho, pero ni la distancia ni el tiempo dejará que estos dos enamorados se olviden.
Gabriel García Márquez tells the story of a love triangle (or something like it) between Florentino Ariza, Ferminia Daza and Juvenal Urbino. After the death of the latter, Florentino Ariza shows up at the home of Dr. Urbino's widow, where he declares his love and how he has been waiting for her for more than half a century. Fermina, very upset and indignant, runs him out of her house and asks him not to show up again. Will Florentino continue to persist despite Fermina's words?
After this event, we take a trip 50 years back, this time we dive into the time when Fermina and Florentino were children, we will discover how they met and the small relationship they began to form based on the correspondence they secretly sent to each other. Fermina's father finds out about this event and decides to send her to some relatives in order to forget about the boy, but neither distance nor time will let these two lovers forget each other.
Es aquí cuando se pone interesante.
El día que Florentino se entera que Fermina ya había regresado al pueblo, sale a buscarla en espera que su amor siga siendo correspondido, sin embargo, en cuanto se tienen frente a frente, Fermina se da cuenta que nunca estuvo enamorada de él, que solo lo idealizó, así que termina la relación y con ello todos los planes (incluidos los de casamiento) que habían trazado en algún momento.
Poco tiempo después, Fermina es cortejada por una de las figuras públicas más estimadas en la ciudad, el doctor Juvenal Urbino; llegan a casarse y tras la luna de miel tienen un hijo en camino. Florentino por su parte, decide irse a trabajar a otra ciudad, en los años que siguieron tuvo encuentros con un sinfín de mujeres en esperanza de que su mente y corazón olvidaran el nombre de la mujer que más amó, nunca se casó ni tuvo descendencia, pero trabajó muy duro para ser ascendido en la compañía fluvial de la ciudad hasta llegar a ser presidente.
Muchas cosas pasan en las próximas páginas, en este punto te sumergirás tanto en la historia que desearás saber cada vez con más fuerzas cómo terminará, qué será de la vida de Florentino, si se casará alguna vez, o te preguntarás si Fermina es realmente feliz con la vida que le tocó vivir, o si estos dos volverán a encontrarse en algún momento de sus vidas…
This is when it gets interesting.
The day Florentino learns that Fermina has already returned to town, he goes out to look for her in the hope that his love will continue to be reciprocated, however, as soon as they are face to face, Fermina realizes that she was never in love with him, that she only idealized him, so the relationship ends and with it all the plans (including marriage) that they had drawn at some point.
Shortly thereafter, Fermina is courted by one of the most esteemed public figures in the city, Dr. Juvenal Urbino; they get married and after the honeymoon they have a child on the way. Florentino, for his part, decides to go to work in another city, in the years that followed he had encounters with countless women in the hope that his mind and heart would forget the name of the woman he loved the most, he never married nor had children, but he worked very hard to be promoted in the city's river company until he became president.
Many things happen in the next pages, at this point you will be so immersed in the story that you will want to know more and more strongly how it will end, what will become of Florentino's life, if he will ever get married, or you will wonder if Fermina is really happy with the life she had to live, or if these two will meet again at some point in their lives....
OPINIÓN PERSONAL
Me parece muy interesante como empieza el libro: un suicidio por parte de una persona que no tenía el más mínimo interés por envejecer, resulta irónico si lo comparamos con la vida de Florentino, que aprovechó hasta los últimos años de su vida para intentar volver a encontrarse con Fermina.
Este libro fue escrito con algunos saltos temporales que pueden confundir al lector pero están seccionados en capítulo, lo que facilita su comprensión. La historia se sitúa entre el siglo XIX y XX, en Colombia; comprenderán que la condición económica tenía mucho peso en la sociedad colonial de la época, teniendo esto en cuenta, resulta lógico que el padre de Fermina no quisiera que mantuviera ninguna relación con un hombre como Florentino (quien entonces era telegrafista), y que en cambio la desposara un doctor de importancia en la ciudad.
No les mentiré, llegué a sentir pena y lástima por Florentino, en ocasiones me fastidiaba que estuviese dispuesto a esperar tanto tiempo para estar nuevamente con ella, sin importar que tuviese una vida y una familia establecida, pero, quién soy yo para juzgar; lo que él veía en Fermina nunca lo vio en ninguna de las mujeres con las que estuvo, sin embargo, a tan poco tiempo de haber quedado viuda, pienso que fue grosero de su parte pedirle que le diera una oportunidad…
PERSONAL OPINION
I find it very interesting how the book begins: a suicide by a person who did not have the slightest interest in growing old, it is ironic if we compare it with the life of Florentino, who used until the last years of his life to try to meet again with Fermina.
This book was written with some time jumps that may confuse the reader, but they are sectioned into chapters, which makes it easier to understand. The story is set between the nineteenth and twentieth century, in Colombia; you will understand that the economic condition had much weight in the colonial society of the time, taking this into account, it is logical that Fermina's father did not want her to maintain any relationship with a man like Florentino (who was then a telegrapher), and that instead she was married by a doctor of importance in the city.
I won't lie to you, I felt sorry and pity for Florentino, sometimes it annoyed me that he was willing to wait so long to be with her again, no matter that he had an established life and family, but, who am I to judge; what he saw in Fermina he never saw in any of the women he was with, however, so soon after being widowed, I think it was rude of him to ask her to give him a chance...
Suelo leer muchas historias de amor, y en base a mi experiencia debo decir que esta fue una historia de amor (ahora que lo pienso, no sabría si llamarla así) poco convencional, aunque hay novelas con tramas similares, esta no es predecible, lo cual debo aplaudir.
Recomiendo esta novela sin importar si eres o no amante del romance, pues, aunque es un clásico, esta historia se sale de lo común, no solo toca temas románticos, sino también maritales en relación al lazo que tenía Fermina con su esposo, y la inevitable muerte presente en la vida de los individuos del pueblo; seguramente la disfrutarás y querrás que más personas la lean.

I usually read a lot of love stories, and based on my experience I must say that this was a love story (now that I think about it, I wouldn't know if I would call it that) unconventional, although there are novels with similar plots, this one is not predictable, which I must applaud.
I recommend this novel no matter if you are a romance lover or not, because, although it is a classic, this story is out of the ordinary, it not only touches on romantic themes, but also marital ones in relation to the bond Fermina had with her husband, and the inevitable death present in the lives of the individuals of the town; you will surely enjoy it and you will want more people to read it.

El amor en los tiempos del cólera, me gustó mucho cuando la leí...cada línea está tan bien escrita que leemos y lo recreamos en nuestra mente...algo así como el amor en estos tiempos de pandemia que vivimos actualmente...recuerdo mucho a Fermina Daza...cuando lo inicié no pude parar hasta terminarla. Para mí el principio de la novela fue algo lento, pero algo me decía que conforme avanzara me iría gustando, y así fue, las últimas páginas las terminé de leer en cuestión de horas. Gracias por leerme, saludos.
Es la primera novela que he leído de este autor, aunque también me han recomendado incontables veces Cien años de soledad, pero hasta ahora no me he animado a echarle el ojo...

Well that was amazing. Reading this felt like seeing a movie. You were very meticulous in your description. The story in itself was very vivid. When I saw it started of with murder I lost interest for a second, but the weird reason for the suicide was even more captivating. An enchanting tale of love.
With my hands full now, I cant make any promises that I'd read this but I like it.
Once you read the book you realize how ironic it is that it begins with a death. Well, it's the death of a friend of Juvenal Urbino, but what does that have to do with the novel itself? This character does not influence the plot directly, but I would interpret it as a matter of subjectivity about the meaning of growing old, love, and life itself if we compare it with the ideals of this character who decided to stop living because he did not want to grow old, and Florentino Daza, who even if his skin wrinkled, his hair fell out, and his health failed him, would wait as long as he had to wait for Fermina. The book is not based on this fact, but it is an important point that perhaps many people have not stopped to think about.

I think this book was recommended to me by a teacher in school, but it wasn't until much later that I read it. Listen to your friend, I'm sure you'll enjoy the plot.
No soy amante de lo romantico, pero esta novela me creo sentimientos insuperables. Tambien me hizo reir como la mayoria de las novelas de Gabo. Insuperable esa perseverancia que tiene el personaje para seguir amando a su amada por 50 años.
Yo sí he leído muchas novelas románticas, suelen ser novelas tiernas de amores juveniles, empalagosos y cursis JAJAJA, por lo que leer esta historia centrada en un tipo de amor más maduro y complejo, fue algo nuevo pero que de igual modo disfruté y aprendí de él. Para mi lo mejor de Gabo sigue siendo Cien Años de Soledad, pero en fin sobre gustos no hay nada escrito.
De cualquier manera El Amor en Tiempos del Cólera es fantástica. Corresponde a su segunda etapa como escritor (de la primera la última novela en 1955 a la última en el 2004 pasa medio siglo).
