'Tram Tragedy' - book review

in Hive Book Club3 years ago (edited)

I create this post for the Book review contest running by Hive Book Club community, but actually its not a review, it is more to it. I want to tell you a detailed story about this intresting book, and about the event it is dedicated to. So, it might be quite a mixed genre... and I dont know where to start :P

Ok, I will start with this photo. The book was published last December, and a week ago I paid a visit to the publisher and received my author's copy. Yes, I took a direct part in its publication, and it was a long-term participation - which began as long as back in 2010!
The story started when the future publisher of this book, while working in the public archive, came across photographs from 1930; they showed a tram wagon, crushed by a train into a pancake. The captions claimed the incident took place at 104 Moskovsky ave, not far from Moscow Triumph Gates - literally within arm's reach from the place he has lived all his life. He was a patriot of his area, but knew nothing about this case! He was amazed and started asking questions, and it turned out no one knew anything about this case. The catastrophe of 1930 turned out to be very deeply buried ... The Great Terror and Repressions of 1938, the Second World War, and much more - the twentieth century was stormy, as you all know - all this erased, supplanted the history of one tram crash from folks memory. Meanwhile, this happened to be the largest tram disaster in the 110-year Tram history of St. Petersburg.

He have started his investigation, have searched for more photos and info -- contemporary newspapers appeared to have very detailed stories both about the disaster and the trial. The project pretty soon shaped into a book, which he started with his long-time designer and partner. The book was about 75% ready, when he approached me and asked to finish it. I put some finishing touches, and the book was published in 2010. It was a light paperback (44 pages only), black-and-white only, 100 copies were printed - due to financial reasons. This is how the cover of the 1st edition looked like. 100 copies is almost nothing, so this book is near to impossible to find.

But this is not the end of the story...

2020 marked the 90th anniversary of this sad event, it was a good reason to come back to this subject, and make a second upgraded edition of the book - especially since the story became "a bit fatter", mixed with new materials, due to more newspaper archeology, and also due to the 1st edition of the book: it aroused interest and resonance, there was found even a living eyewitness who saw the disaster with her own eyes (a girl who studied in a nearby school back in 1930)! Amazing, isnt it? There even appeared a short film at Youtube channel, dedicated to this old news.

A screencap from the said film. On the right is the publisher and producer of the book, the author of all this project - M.Sapego - he talks about the catastrophe standing at the very same spot today.

This is how the place looks today; nothing reminds of the disaster 90 years ago, there is no even a commemorative plaque. I came here and performed a little fotosession to design the book cover (another photo was placed onto its back).

IMG_8495ww.jpg

New edition was printed in the quantity of 300 copies only, as the subject is quite special, after all, publisher cannot hope to find 10,000 readers for this book. But now the book have got more colour (now it is black-and-red, as it was planned initially back in 2010), and it is really an awesome upgrade!

Original newspaper 'Elektrosila' from December 3, 1930 - announcing about the tragedy.

So, the edition turned out to be quite improved - I did a nice job on the design and layout. The publisher also specifically commissioned an artist to paint a painting that now adorns the cover instead of the photograph. Here are a few pictures - this is how the pages of the book look with the design I came up with: it is emotional, disturbing, and at the same time filled with the spirit of the times.

It turned out to be a good book, which is pleasant to hold in your hands. I am proud that I was involved in her birth! Of course, it is not for a wide audience ... this book is addressed to those who are fans of the history of their hometown ... or just a fan of history. And even those who are a fan will not necessarily want to buy it, I understand this well: bookshelves are not rubber, and someday there will be no space on them, you have to responsibly approach the library set and not buy anything you get. But it's worth reading this book!

You are very talented and you certainly did a great job here my friend.
Excellent layout and design and an interesting story, as I remember the trams that we used to ride on here when I was a child.
We were lucky as our tram lines didn't cross any railway lines.

A great post and a winner here as far as I am concerned!

Cheers and prost with some !WINE

thank you! maybe win, maybe not, I did it my best cause the subject was worth it. this is less of a "review genre", I understand it pretty well ... just got too much knowledge of the question on my hands, haha! sometimes excess do not lead to better results. I consider there are better book reviews than mine, but it was a nice post, anyway. and its a nice community, worth the efforts, for sure! - !ENGAGE 20

We are the same my friend, as I know that you didn't do it for the win, but rather for your love of it and that's all that counts.
It was certainly worth your efforts and you are very talented, as I could never do something as prestigious.
I am not singing your praises here, but I know that something is very good when I see it.
So, well done once again.

Cheers and !BEER

@qwerrie - This is my first time that I heard about Hive Book Club. Thanks for the info and yes I subscribed to the group without any hesitation. I personally really love and support small publishers even they don't have any big hit books on their list. Your artwork and layout of the tram book is really creative with a blend in of old newspaper style and bold color of black and red. Have a great Monday.
