Saludos aventureros, llevo tiempo lejos de la pantalla y de la escritura ya que me encuentro en un tratamiento para la vista que me impide estar mucho tiempo con los ojos fijos en el monitor. Sin embargo, actualmente me encuentro un poco mejor y con ganas de retomar una sección que tenía bastante tiempo abandonada, las curiosidades del universo de Canción de Hielo y Fuego de George RR Martin.
Hoy hablaremos de un material o más bien un elemento importante de la saga que a origen a un sinfín de materiales; el mítico acero Valyrio, ya habíamos hablado un poco sobre las espadas y algunas armas famosas hechas de este material. En este breve articulo volveremos a repasar algunas de estas cuestiones, pero nos enfocaremos mas en las características de este curioso mineral que tanto valor tiene en este universo.

Greetings adventurers, I have been away from the screen and writing for some time now, as I am undergoing a treatment for my eyesight that prevents me from spending much time with my eyes fixed on the monitor. However, nowadays I feel a little better and I feel like resuming a section that I had abandoned for a long time, the curiosities of the universe of George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.
Today we will talk about a material or rather an important element of the saga that gave rise to countless materials; the mythical Valyrian steel, we had already talked a little about the swords and some famous weapons made of this material. In this brief article we will review some of these issues, but we will focus more on the characteristics of this curious mineral that has so much value in this universe.

La virtud esta en la forja | Virtue is in the forge
El acero Valyrio sin duda es el metal más famoso y codicioso del mundo de conocido, el acero con el que los monarcas de la viejo Feudo Franco de la antigua Valyria pusieron al mundo de rodillas, se cree que en el mundo conocido no existe acero de mejor calidad que este.
El acero valyrio es famoso por su calidad, su filo, la ligereza y durabilidad pues lar armas hechas con este material pueden permanecer afiladas y mortíferas durante muchísimos años, las armas hechas de este material tienen un valor sin igual y su existencia es muy escasa.
Muchos no lo saben, pero la realidad es que el acero valyrio no es un material propiamente dicho, pues la misma materia prima en sí no tiene ninguna virtud en particular, el verdadero valor del acero se guarda en la forma y proceso con el que se forja, eso es lo que le da sus cualidades tan únicas.
Se desconoce cuál es el secreto que hay tras el proceso de forjado y fabricación de artefactos de acero valyrio pero se cree que no solo hay técnicas complejas y formas misteriosas de procesar el metal sino que también hay magia y hechizos de por medio, algunos estudiosos sostienen que el fuego de los dragones era fundamental para la creación de los artefactos de acero valyrio. Pocos son los herreros que conocen la forma de trabajar este acero en la actualidad ya que la mayoría de conocimiento que se tenía de este material se perdió con la ruina de Valyria.
Valyrian steel is undoubtedly the most famous and coveted metal in the known world, the steel with which the monarchs of the old Frankish fief of ancient Valyria brought the world to its knees, it is believed that in the known world there is no steel of better quality than this.
Valyrian steel is famous for its quality, sharpness, lightness and durability because weapons made of this material can remain sharp and deadly for many years, weapons made of this material have an unparalleled value and its existence is very scarce.
Many do not know, but the reality is that Valyrian steel is not a material itself, because the raw material itself has no particular virtue, the true value of steel is stored in the form and process with which it is forged, that is what gives it its unique qualities.
It is unknown what is the secret behind the process of forging and manufacturing Valyrian steel artifacts but it is believed that not only are there complex techniques and mysterious ways of processing the metal but there is also magic and spells involved, some scholars argue that the fire of the dragons was essential for the creation of Valyrian steel artifacts. Few blacksmiths know how to work this steel today as most of the knowledge of this material was lost with the ruin of Valyria.
Las espadas de acero valyrio mas famosas | The most famous Valyrian steel swords
El material más conocido fabricado del acero Valyrio es por supuesto la espada, muchas de ellas han sido codiciadas por la nobleza de Westeros desde los primeros días; su número en el continente es extremadamente escaso. Se cree que existen alrededor de doscientas espadas de acero valyrio distribuidas en Westeros, sin contar las miles y miles que se perdieron en el desastre de Valyria o las armas que Aegon Targaryen trajo consigo tras cuando conquistó Westeros.
Mencionaremos algunas de las más conocidas en la saga muy brevemente.
- Hielo;
La espada ancestral de la casa Stark y la primera espada de acero valyrio de la que tenemos conocimiento, es más larga que un hombre y su hoja es más hacha que la mano extendida de un guerrero, su hoja brilla con un filo negro parecido al humo de una gran hoguera.
- Garra;
La espada que antaño perteneció al Lord Comandante de la Guardia Nocturna Jeor Mormont y que posteriormente pasaría a manos de Jon Snow su portador actual.
- Lamento de Viuda;
La espada que se le otorgó a Joffrey Baratheon como regalo de bodas, la empuñadura era dorada con forma de garras de león y la hoja era de un gris oscuro con detalles escarlata brillante, una espada un tanto más pequeña en comparación con el resto, esta espada fue creada a partir de Hielo.
- Guarda Juramentos;
La segunda espada nacida de Hielo, muy parecida a su hermana Lamento de Viuda, pero más larga y pesada, con un pomo adornado con una cabeza de león, salvando estas diferencias la espada es muy similar a la descripción de Lamento de Viuda, su dueño era Jaime Lannister pero actualmente se encuentra en poder de Brienne de Tarth.
The best known material made from Valyrian steel is of course the sword, many of which have been coveted by the nobility of Westeros since the earliest days; their number on the continent is extremely scarce. It is believed that there are around two hundred Valyrian steel swords distributed in Westeros, not counting the thousands and thousands that were lost in the disaster of Valyria or the weapons that Aegon Targaryen brought with him when he conquered Westeros.
We will mention some of the best known in the saga very briefly.
- Ice;
The ancestral sword of House Stark and the first Valyrian steel sword we know of, it is longer than a man and its blade is more axe than a warrior's outstretched hand, its blade glows with a black edge resembling the smoke of a great bonfire.
- Claw;
The sword that once belonged to the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch Jeor Mormont and would later pass into the hands of Jon Snow its current bearer.
- Widow's Lament;
The sword given to Joffrey Baratheon as a wedding gift, the hilt was golden in the shape of lion's claws and the blade was a dark grey with bright scarlet accents, a somewhat smaller sword in comparison to the rest, this sword was created from Ice.
- Oath Keeper;
The second sword born from Ice, very similar to its sister Widow's Lament, but longer and heavier, with a pommel adorned with a lion's head, saving these differences the sword is very similar to the description of Widow's Lament, its owner was Jaime Lannister but it is currently held by Brienne of Tarth.
Algunas no tan conocidas | Some not so well known
También podemos encontrar algunas espadas de casas poco conocidas, pero a las que se les hace mención en la saga, entre ellas tenemos las siguientes.
- Veneno de Corazón;
La espada insignia de la casa Tarly, los más poderosos abanderados de la casa Tyrrel, esta espada ya la vimos en la saga de Juego de Tronos sin embargo en los libros no es tan conocida, se trata de un enorme mandoble, se requiere de una enorme destreza y fuerza para empuñarlo correctamente. Es el gran tesoro de la casa Tarly.
- Lluvia Roja;
Espada en poder de la casa Drumm, el señor de la casa Hilmar Drumm se ganó aquella espada en una apuesta con otra casa noble, se cree que la espada perteneció algún caballero de la casa Rayne de Castamere.
- Anochecer;
Espada que perteneció a un pirata corsario del Mar Estrecho y que fue arrebata de su cadáver por Dalton Greyjoy y de una forma que desconocemos la espada pasó a manos de la casa Harlaw.
We can also find some swords of little known houses, but which are mentioned in the saga, among them we have the following.
- Heart's Poison;
The flagship sword of House Tarly, the most powerful standard bearers of House Tyrrel, this sword we saw in the saga of Game of Thrones but in the books is not so well known, it is a huge sword, it requires enormous skill and strength to wield it properly. It is the great treasure of House Tarly.
- Red Rain;
Sword held by House Drumm, the lord of House Hilmar Drumm won that sword in a wager with another noble house, it is believed that the sword belonged to a knight of House Rayne of Castamere.
- Nightfall;
Sword that belonged to a corsair pirate of the Strait Sea and that was snatched from his corpse by Dalton Greyjoy and in a way that we do not know the sword passed into the hands of the house Harlaw.
Olvidadas en la sombras | Forgotten in the shadows
Además de las espadas poco conocidas y las más famosas de la saga, hay otras espadas de las que poco o nada se sabe, quienes fueron sus portadores o cuales fueron sus destinos, sin embargo, en vista de que muy pronto se estrenará la nueva serie basada en los libros de Martin y el universo de Canción de Hielo y Fuego muy seguramente podremos ver algunas de estas misteriosas armas y podremos hablar de ellas con mas detalle.
Pero en este apartado podemos mencionar que muchas de las armas de acero valyrio llegaron a Westeros de las arcas de Aegon el Conquistador, este las otorgó a los gobernantes de las casas que se aliasen bajo su mando y lo reconocieran como su rey.
Durante las guerras y conflictos venideros muchas armas de acero Valyrio se perdieron, desaparecieron o cambiaron de dueño el periodo donde mayor cantidad de espadas conocidas hubo en existencia en Westeros fue durante la Danza de Dragones y las rebeliones de los Fuegoscuro, conflictos bélicos muy interesantes los cuales tocaremos próximamente.
In addition to the little known swords and the most famous of the saga, there are other swords of which little or nothing is known, who were their bearers or what were their destinies, however, in view of the fact that very soon the new series based on Martin's books and the universe of Song of Ice and Fire will be released, we will surely see some of these mysterious weapons and we will be able to talk about them in more detail.
But in this section we can mention that many of the Valyrian steel weapons came to Westeros from the coffers of Aegon the Conqueror, this granted them to the rulers of the houses that were aliased under his command and recognized him as their king.
During the wars and conflicts to come, many Valyrian steel weapons were lost, disappeared or changed owners. The period when the largest number of known swords were in existence in Westeros was during the Dance of Dragons and the rebellions of the Fuegoscuro, very interesting war conflicts which we will touch on soon.
Desgraciadamente los secretos de la forja del acero Valyrio son casi un misterio en su totalidad, contados son los herreros maestros en el arte de trabajar este metal siendo capaces de reforjar las espadas de acero valyrio sin que estas pierdan sus bondades.

Por desgracia no hay herrero ni artesano en el mundo que pueda fabricar una espada o material de acero valyrio desde cero, como dije antes dicho arte se perdió con la caída de Valyria y dudo que alguien en el mundo conocido sea capaz de desvelar el secreto que hay tras este mítico material.
No solamente se utilizó este acero para forjar espadas y dagas; se sabe que también existen hachas de acero valyrio, valiosos ornamentos entre ellos algunos tesoros perdidos de los Targaryen como la corona de Aegon el conquistador, los eslabones de las cadenas de los grandes maestros que se especializan en las artes y hechicerías en la Ciudadela están hechas de acero valyrio.
Aunque sin duda el objeto más inquietante es el cuerno de dragón de Euron Greyjoy del que se dice es capaz de hacer que los dragones obren su voluntad con soplarlo, muy pronto sabremos más de este misterioso acero a medida que la historia nos empuje más allá de las fronteras que conocemos.
Unfortunately, the secrets of the forging of Valyrian steel are almost a mystery in its entirety, only a few blacksmiths are masters in the art of working this metal being able to strengthen the Valyrian steel swords without losing their goodness.
The great masters in the art of working Valyrian steel are the blacksmiths of the city of Qohor, who still preserve the art and a few spells used in the forging of the material.
In Westeros there is only one blacksmith capable of working with this material, Tobho Mott, the most skilled blacksmith in King's Landing and the one in charge of reforging the sword Ice.
Unfortunately there is no blacksmith or craftsman in the world who can make a sword or Valyrian steel material from scratch, as I said before this art was lost with the fall of Valyria and I doubt that anyone in the known world is able to reveal the secret behind this mythical material.
Not only was this steel used to forge swords and daggers; it is known that there are also Valyrian steel axes, valuable ornaments among them some lost treasures of the Targaryen as the crown of Aegon the conqueror, the links of the chains of the great masters who specialize in the arts and sorceries in the Citadel are made of Valyrian steel.
Though undoubtedly the most disturbing object is Euron Greyjoy's dragon horn said to be able to make dragons work their will by blowing it, we will soon learn more about this mysterious steel as the story pushes us beyond the borders we know.
Al filo del final | At the edge of the end
Esto es todo lo que sabemos hasta ahora del acero Valyrio, material que cobra cada vez más importancia en los hilos que mueven la trama y que seguramente iremos descubriendo mucho más de él con la llegada de los Vientos de Invierno.
