Another meeting with the Great Old Ones. This time I will try not to spoil too much. Reading The Whisperer in Darkness, you can get the impression of entering the dark world very gently. It’s as if the Author imperceptibly wanted to drag the reader into a trap. The story, apart from the descriptions of the first-person character – Albert Wilmarth – consists mainly of correspondence between Wilmarth and Henry Akeley. The former is fascinated by ghostly creatures that live in some remote area among hills, forests and caves; the latter – Akeley – is a witness to their existence. He is a mine of knowledge for Wilmarth on this subject. Gradually, we learn more and more about these creatures. The secret hidden centuries ago is gradually revealed to the light of day. The incidents taking place on some small part of the globe seem to be of decisive importance for all mankind.
Kolejne spotkanie z Wielkimi Przedwiecznymi. Tym razem postaram się zbytnio nie spojlerować. Czytając Szepczącego w ciemności odnosi się wrażenie bardzo łagodnego wchodzenia w mroczny świat. Tak jakby Autor niepostrzeżenie chciał wciągnąć czytelnika w pułapkę. Opowiadanie, prócz opisów bohatera piewszoosobowego – Alberta Wilmartha – składa się głównie z korespondencji, którą prowadzili ze sobą Wilmarth oraz Henry Akeley. Ten pierwszy jest zafascynowany upiornymi istotami, które żyją na jakimś odludziu wśród wzgórz, lasów i jaskiń; natomiast Akeley jest świadkiem ich istnienia. Stanowi dla Wilmartha kopalnię wiedzy na ten temat. Stopniowo dowiadujemy się coraz więcej o tych stworzeniach. Tajemnica skrywana przed wiekami zostaje stopniowo wyjawiana na światło dzienne. Wydarzenia mające miejsce na jakimś małym skrawku globu, zdają się mieć decydujące znaczenie dla całej ludzkości.

There is a feeling of enormous pressure that is exerted on Wilmarth. His emotional deductions with frightening visions of humanity are not helping here. The action is carried out in a very intricate way as if the Author was playing with our perception like a ping-pong ball. Every few pages an action booster is installed. The concept of the story is similar to the previous two – it shows the consequences of playing with evil (or at least that's how I see it) and the human desire for immortality, for having omniscience. Everything comes at a great price, of course. Complete dehumanization. Well… in one word – horror.
Odnosi się wrażenie ogromnej presji, pod którą jest poddawany Wilmarth. Nie pomagają tutaj jego przepełnione emocjami wywody, z których sączą się zatrważające wizje ludzkości. Cała akcja jest poprowadzona w bardzo zawiły sposób, tak jakby Autor odbijał naszą percepcją jak piłeczką do ping-ponga. Co chwila jest wrzucany booster akcji. Koncepcja opowiadania jest podobna do dwóch poprzednich – ukazywane są konsekwencje igrania ze złem (a przynajmniej ja tak to odczytuję) oraz ludzka żądzą do nieśmiertelności, do posiadania wszechwiedzy. Wszystko jest oczywiście okupione wielką ceną. Zupełna dehumanizacja. Cóż… jednym słowem – horror.
This is a story about a man caught in the darkness. Over time, the man begins to dream about it, he want the darkness; desires the infinite cognition, but unfortunately it is a path without responsibility. It is a path of selfish and vain knowledge that leads to a real hell…
To opowiadanie o człowieku wciągniętym w mrok. Człowiek ten z czasem sam zaczyna o nim śnić, marzyć, pragnąć bezkresnej głębi poznania, ale niestety jest to droga bez odpowiedzialności. Jest to droga egoistycznego i próżnego poznania, która prowadzi do istnego piekła…
