Hello, friends of HiveBookClub. As I mentioned in my previous publications, in which we talked about Kazan, The Call of the Wild and The Hound of the Baskervilles, I continue navigating through the classics that have once again reached my hands. This time I want to share with you a book that not only marked my childhood, but also became the gateway to one of the most influential universes in modern literature, this is the case of The Hobbit, by the British writer J.R.R. Tolkien.
I can confess that reading this book so many years later has been like returning to a place you know well, but that now I can see from another perspective. I found details that previously went unnoticed, beyond the adventure and the excitement. Basically because one changes, and books, like life, show us different things depending on the moment.
In The Hobbit we are introduced to Bilbo Baggins, a respectable and quiet hobbit, fond of tea and comfort. His world takes an unexpected turn when the wizard Gandalf sends him on a journey with a group of dwarves to recover a treasure guarded by the feared dragon Smaug.
It may seem like a tale for young people, but in reality it is a deeply human story, one that speaks to us about the struggle between comfort and personal growth. It touches on the subject of fear and bravery. The discovery of identity while far from home, and the value of the simple over the grandiose.
Bilbo is not a typical hero at all; he becomes a hero because life’s circumstances lead him to it. Reading his journey, we can also discover our own.
As always, I share a fragment that caught my attention the most from the original text.
“The road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, 1937
It is something simple, almost poetic, but it summarizes everything this book represents. In this case, the road is nothing more than a metaphor for life. What we leave behind, what we find, what has the ability to transform us.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892–1973), the man who created a modern mythology. He was a philologist and professor at Oxford, passionate about ancient languages. A passion that became the heart of all his work.
He was not an inventor of stories; he invented an entire world. Complete languages, mythologies, maps, eras, characters, songs. That is why he is considered the father of modern fantasy.
Among his main works are The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, The Children of Húrin, Unfinished Tales, Roverandom, Leaf by Niggle. But The Hobbit was the beginning of everything, the first portal to Middle-earth.
One of the reasons The Hobbit remains relevant is its unique style, that blend of humor, adventure and poetry. Also because it has a narrator who speaks to you, combining depth with simplicity, using songs and rhymes to bring the world to life, and maintaining a childlike tone that hides very adult themes.
It is more than an entertaining book; it is a thoughtful, intelligent book, full of symbolism.
One of my favorite moments is when Bilbo faces his first great moral decision, the one that reveals to him —and to the reader— that he is no longer the fearful hobbit from the beginning. It is in that moment where bravery appears without noise, without boastfulness. One realizes why this character has been liked by so many generations.
A curious fact that I have always liked is that the first sentence of the book, that famous line “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit,” was written almost by accident while the author was correcting an exam. That simple sentence was the origin of an entire universe. That is how great things are sometimes formed—from small impulses.
The Hobbit has been adapted to film several times, the most well-known being the trilogy directed by Peter Jackson in 2012–2014. Despite the differences with the book, the films managed to recover the magic of the journey and the essence of the characters.
The photos I share here with you correspond to the copy I have in my hands. A Cuban edition by Editorial Gente Nueva, which many will remember for its importance in the reading education of several generations in Cuba. Made only for Cuba in 1989. The yellowish paper, the smell of old book and the marks of time give it a sentimental value that no modern edition can match.
Reading a classic like this in physical format has something special. Coincidentally, in these days when the electric power is scarce, a book never fails. It makes you see things differently again. And besides, these objects are part of our cultural memory.
Currently we all live in a fast-paced world, full of noise and screens. Rereading The Hobbit is remembering that adventure can begin in the everyday. That having courage does not mean having no fear, but quite the opposite. Courage is born precisely from fear. And that even a hobbit —synonymous with small and quiet— can change the destiny of an entire world.
This book makes us appreciate what is essential: friendship, humility, bravery and the discovery of ourselves.

Hola, amigos de HiveBook Club. Como les comenté en mis publicaciones anteriores, en las que hablamos de Kazan, El llamado de la selva y El sabueso de los Baskerville, sigo navegando entre los clásicos que han llegado nuevamente a mis manos. Esta vez quiero compartir con ustedes un libro que no solo marcó mi infancia, sino que también se convirtió en puerta de entrada a uno de los universos más influyentes de la literatura moderna, es el caso de El Hobbit, del escritor británico J.R.R. Tolkien.
Les puedo confesar que leer este libro tantos años después ha sido como regresar a un lugar que conoces bien, pero que ahora puedo verlo con otra perspectiva. Encontré detalles que antes pasaron desapercibidos, más allá de la aventura y la emoción. Básicamente porque uno cambia, y los libros, como la vida, nos muestran cosas distintas según el momento.
En El Hobbit se nos presenta a Bilbo Bolsón, un hobbit respetable, tranquilo, amante del té y de la comodidad. Su mundo da un giro inesperado cuando el mago Gandalf lo envía en un viaje junto a un grupo de enanos para recuperar un tesoro que está custodiado por el temido dragón Smaug.
Puede parecer un cuento para jóvenes, pero en realidad es una historia profundamente humana, en ella se nos habla de la lucha entre la comodidad y el crecimiento personal. Se toca el tema del miedo y la valentía. El descubrimiento de la identidad estando lejos de casa y valorar lo sencillo frente a lo grandioso.
Bilbo para nada es un héroe típico, se convierte en héroe porque las circunstancias de la vida lo llevan a ello. Leyendo en ese viaje también podemos descubrir el nuestro.
Como siempre comparto un fragmento que más me llamó la atención del texto original.

En español se traduce así:
“El camino sigue y sigue, desde la puerta donde comenzó.”
Es algo sencillo, casi poético, pero resume todo lo que representa este libro. En este caso el camino no es más que una metáfora de la vida. Lo que dejamos atrás, aquello que encontramos, lo que tiene la capacidad de transformarnos.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892–1973) el hombre que creó una mitología moderna. Fue un filólogo y profesor en Oxford, apasionado por las lenguas antiguas. Pasión que se convirtió en el corazón de toda su obra.
No fue un inventor de historias, inventó un mundo entero. Lenguas completas, mitologías, mapas, eras, personajes, canciones. Por eso es que se le considera el padre de la fantasía moderna.
Entre sus principales obras están, El Señor de los Anillos, El Silmarillion, Los Hijos de Húrin, Cuentos inconclusos, Roverandom, Hoja de Niggle. Pero El Hobbit fue el inicio de todo, el primer portal a la Tierra Media.
Una de las razones por las que El Hobbit sigue vigente es su estilo único, esa mezcla de humor, aventura y poesía. También por tener un narrador que conversa contigo, combina profundidad con sencillez, utiliza canciones y rimas para darle vida al mundo y mantiene un tono infantil que esconde temas muy adultos.
Es más que un libro entretenido, es un libro inteligente, pensado, lleno de simbolismos.
Uno de mis momentos preferidos es cuando Bilbo se enfrenta a su primera gran decisión moral, esa que le revela a él y al lector, que ya no es el hobbit temeroso del inicio. En ese instante es donde la valentía aparece sin ruido, sin alardes. Uno se da cuenta de porque este personaje le ha gustado a muchas generaciones.
Un dato curioso que siempre me ha gustado, es que la primera frase del libro, aquella famosa línea “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit” el autor la escribió casi por accidente en un examen que estaba corrigiendo. Esa simple frase fue el origen de un universo entero. Así se forman a veces las cosas grandes, de los pequeños impulsos.
El Hobbit ha sido llevado al cine varias veces, siendo la más conocida la trilogía dirigida por Peter Jackson en 2012–2014. A pesar de las diferencias con el libro, las películas lograron recuperar la magia del viaje y la esencia de los personajes.
Las fotos que comparto aquí con ustedes corresponden al ejemplar que tengo en mis manos. una edición cubana de Editorial Gente Nueva, que muchos recordarán por su importancia en la formación lectora de varias generaciones en Cuba. Hecha solo para Cuba en 1989. El papel amarillento, el olor a libro antiguo y las marcas del tiempo le dan un valor sentimental que ninguna edición moderna puede igualar.
Leer un clásico así, en formato físico, tiene algo especial. Casualmente en estos días en los que el fluido eléctrico está escaso, un libro no falla. Te hace volver a ver las cosas de otra forma. Y además, estos objetos son parte de nuestra memoria cultural.
Actualmente todos vivimos en un mundo acelerado, lleno de ruido y pantallas. Releer El Hobbit es recordar que la aventura puede empezar en lo cotidiano. Que tener valor no significa que no se tenga miedo, sino todo lo contrario. Precisamente del miedo nace el valor. Y que incluso un hobbit sinónimo de pequeño y tranquilo puede cambiar el destino de un mundo entero.
Este libro hace que apreciemos lo esencial, la amistad, la humildad, la valentía y el descubrimiento de nosotros mismos.
