My Marinara Sauce with Basil

It has been a while since my last post on Hive. I've been very busy getting settled in my new home lately. A few days ago I moved from a big house to a smaller house because my daughter went to university in the Northern part of Thailand after online learning for over a year because of the COVID-19 has resulted in schools shut all across the country.

She is still back home to live with me during the summer and winter breaks but I was pretty emotional because we were together, just the two of us from she was 8 months of age until she was 20 and studying in the second year at Veterinary Medicine school right now.

After things start to get right back on track, so I try to run my life as my schedule both at work and in my home life and of course post my recipe on Hive too. So today I would like to share with you guys a delicious and all-purpose marinara sauce that is useful for those who are very busy people like me.

To make this simple marinara sauce, firstly heat a touch of olive oil in a saucepan, and cook the garlic, onions, carrots, and celery stalks until soft and translucent. Add the dried herbs like oregano, bay leaf, fennel seeds, and dried basil. Then I do the seasoning with Himalayan salt and organic ground pepper. And I add the dried chili to heat the spicy flavor. Then throw in canned tomatoes and let that all simmer.

I also add the natural sweetness from Royal Gala Apple which balances the acidity of the canned tomato. Once I’ve cooked down the tomatoes into my desired thickness and consistency, then I add in my flavor maker which is fresh basil from my garden.

This marinara sauce is naturally chunky, but I do a shortcut way and easily make it into a smooth and silky marinara sauce by blending them with the hand blender while they are still hot. I prefer to use my handheld immersion blender to puree it to a rough smooth right in the pot but if you don't have them, possible to move the marinara sauce into the counter blender but please be careful with the hot.

My marinara sauce recipe is surprisingly easy to make and can be stored for up to a week in the refrigerator and up to 6 months in the freezer. Just make sure you use an airtight jar container.

Transfer the marinara sauce from the pot into the same saucepan. Once the oil starts to crack at the edge, it means the marinara sauce is ready and cooked completely. Then add in the fresh basil.

Simmer until the marinara sauce blends together for about 5 minutes, and stir occasionally to avoid the soup from burning.

That’s a really good recipe and I think it’ll taste great. I particularly like how you use canned tomatoes rather than fresh, because for Italian sauces the tomatoes have to be ripe and cook for hours so that they develop a mature flavor. Lovely! ❤️🤗💕

PS: you look too young to have a 20 year old daughter 🤗

Aww that’s so good to hear @itsostylish! Thanks for your kind words ;)
Marinara sauce from canned is awesome, especially during the promotion offers from supermarket when those canned are so cheap hehe. 😄

Hi @shinecrystalline! This sauce is great, as you integrate flavors that go great together. I particularly like bay leaf, oregano, I think they make a good combination with tomato and basil, and well, basil is so fragrant and delicious, it certainly enriches any dish. Excellent recipe.

Note: I see you have Combretum indicum flowers in your new home, that plant is beautiful, I have one too. I hope you are doing great in your new home. Greetings.

I think we can’t beat homemade marinara sauce. It makes the kitchen smell amazing too!! Such a good perfume for a Sunday afternoon hehe! 😄 I have the Combretum Indicum flowers in my garden, they are so beautiful and I think the perfect place for them is beside the fence. Unfortunately, the owner grows them beside the wall so they have no place to hang and grow beautifully. 😅

This sauce smells like Sunday to me too. My mother used to make a big pot of it on Sunday mornings and the whole house smelled like it. Then she would make pasta or lasagna and the rest she would save, good memories.

Too bad they can't grow Combretum flowers well, at least you have its delicious scent nearby, it's a great plant.

Hi @shinecrystalline , I love this recipe, the first thing that came to my mind was pasta with this rich sauce, and the pictures are beautiful.

Wow, I totally 100% agree with you @jessiencasa to pairing with pasta would be a delicious and perfect match! 😀

I make a similar sauce but yours has the added apple and fennel. I'm intrigued by this. I think it's a great idea.

It's funny that we both moved recently. It takes time to adjust to a new place. Sorry to hear about the separation between you and your daughter.

Best wishes

I think it’s a nice go-to basic sauce recipe and I learn the technique to use apple as a natural sweetness from Korean and Japanese Cuisine.
Hahaha, it's true! What a coincidence that we moved at nearly the same time. Moving always sucks all my soul, so exhausted to adjust all my stuff so it's a bit of time as you say to get our track back. Happy day, Carolyn!! 😀

I like this to accompany pasta dishes which go great.

I wonder why it has to be Marinara sauce, is it a regional name or something else?

This sauce is widely used in Italy and usually made with tomatoes, garlic, herbs and onion. I assume myself that Marinara is the derivation from Marine :) They are so worldwide popular, especially with pasta. 😀

wow very informative, thanks for giving a good answer @shinecrystalline i really never heard of this sauce
