No han formado parte de la tradición familiar los adornos de Semana Santa, por lo que este mes voy a presentar una pequeña colección de billetes emitidos por el Banco de España entre 1938 y los años 80,s.
Aunque realmente, el número de billetes “democráticos” es testimonial. Sólo dos los billetes que presento hoy fueron emitidos durante el reinado de Juan Carlos I.

Easter decorations have never been part of my family tradition, so this month I’m going to present a small collection of banknotes issued by the Bank of Spain between 1938 and the 1980s.
Although, in reality, the number of “democratic” banknotes is negligible. Only two of the banknotes that I present today were issued during the reign of Juan Carlos I.

Estos billetes los heredé de mi padre, aunque la mayor parte de ellos se adquirieron y pasaron a la familia estando yo presente.
La afición numismática de mi padre duró sólo unos pocos años, quizás dos o tres, aunque como testigo y pequeño acompañante de ésta actividad paterna, puedo decir que me lo pasé muy bien durante esos momentos compartidos.
Creo que fue mi tío Miguel el culpable de empujar a mi padre a lo que se convirtió en una nueva afición. Mi tío era un gran coleccionista de billetes de banco y de sellos postales, por lo que, cada domingo, se transformaba en una nueva oportunidad para acudir a la Plaza Mayor de Madrid en busca de algún ejemplar raro.
Mi tío era una persona muy generosa a la hora de mostrar sus colecciones y mi padre, probablemente con algo de envidia, quiso emular a su cuñado y, quizás, también tuvo la pretensión de superar al cuñado.
En todo caso, coleccionar monedas y billetes proporcionaba una aire así como aristocrático, una actividad que la gente “común” no solía hacer.
Claro que por muy aristocrática que pudiera parecer tal actividad, lo coleccionado, salvo sorpresa mayúscula, tiene poco valor de mercado.
I inherited these banknotes from my father, although most of them were acquired and passed down to the family while I was present.
My father’s interest in numismatics lasted only a few years—perhaps two or three—though as a witness and young companion to this hobby of his, I can say I had a wonderful time during those shared moments.
I believe it was my uncle Miguel who was responsible for encouraging my father to take up what became a new hobby. My uncle was a great collector of banknotes and postage stamps, so every Sunday became a new opportunity to go to Madrid’s Plaza Mayor in search of some rare specimen.
My uncle was very generous about showing off his collections, and my father, probably feeling a bit envious, wanted to emulate his brother-in-law and, perhaps, also had the ambition to surpass him.
In any case, collecting coins and banknotes conferred a certain air of aristocracy—an activity that “ordinary” people didn’t usually engage in.
Of course, no matter how aristocratic such an activity might seem, the items collected, barring a major surprise, have little market value.

Entre estos billetes no hay ningún ejemplar excepcional o único que justifique el pago de una alto precio. Al contrario, son billetes ya circulados en su mayoría, con algún deterioro visible y que forman parte de tiradas de millones de ejemplares. Es decir, todo lo contrario a lo que busca un buen coleccionista o inversor.
Se trata, por tanto, de una colección formada por un trabajador medio de una familia corriente.
Sin embargo, esas mañanas de domingo yo me lo pasaba en grande, se convirtieron en un momento muy especial en la semana de ese niño que fui (y que quizás todavía sea).
Recuerdo como los fines de semana, la Plaza Mayor se abarrotaba de vendedores que mostraban su preciada mercancía sobre unas endebles mesas de madera plegables. A su alrededor merodeábamos cientos de curiosos y algunos coleccionistas.
Debido a mi altura y a mis buenas dotes para el regate de piernas, mostré por ese entonces una gran habilidad para descubrir esta o aquella moneda. Todavía me puedo ver como me iba abriendo hueco entre gigantes, hasta que mi cabecita asomaba sobre esos tableros armados a la altura de mis hombros.
None of these bills are exceptional or unique enough to justify a high price. On the contrary, most of them are bills that have already been in circulation, show some visible wear and tear, and are part of print runs numbering in the millions. In other words, they are the exact opposite of what a serious collector or investor would seek.
This is, therefore, a collection put together by an average worker from an ordinary family.
However, I had a great time on those Sunday mornings; they became a very special moment in the week for the child I was (and perhaps still am).
I remember how, on weekends, the Plaza Mayor would be packed with vendors displaying their prized wares on flimsy folding wooden tables. Hundreds of curious onlookers and a few collectors would mill about them.
Thanks to my height and my knack for weaving through the crowd, I showed a real talent back then for spotting this or that coin. I can still see myself making my way through the giants, until my little head peeked over those tables set up at shoulder height.

Cuando me llamaba la atención algún ejemplar, por el dibujo, por su color o por algún detalle llamativo, agarraba del pantalón a mi padre y con el dedo señalaba la pieza que me gustaba. Si se daba el caso de que mi padre comprara ese billete o esa moneda, me convertía en un niño feliz e impaciente por llegar a casa, con el fin de mostrarle a mi madre la nueva adquisición.
Mi padre, que nunca fue un apasionado de la numismática, pronto dejó la afición y cesaron los viajes del domingo al centro de Madrid. Lo que realmente le gustaba a mi padre hacer los domingos, era jugar al mus acompañado de sus amigos y un vaso de cerveza fresca.
Aunque no es una gran colección, el lector puede adivinar que conserva un gran valor para mí. Por otra parte, son parte de la historia de España, y además algunos me parecen auténticas obras de arte.
Entre estos billetes hay uno que, aunque muy deteriorado, es muy especial. Es un billete de cien pesetas emitido en Burgos en 1938 por el bando nacional. Madrid era zona republicana y el dinero de la España franquista de emitía en Burgos.
Además de recuerdos, este conjunto de billetes, también son una historia de España. No sólo por el billete emitido en Burgos. En esta colección destacan los personajes religiosos, los reyes, entre ellos no podían faltar los Reyes Católicos, el arte y la literatura, la mujer andaluza… es decir, la historia de España como se contó durante cuarenta años.
Whenever a particular coin or bill caught my eye—because of its design, its color, or some striking detail—I’d grab my father’s pants and point to the one I liked. Whenever my father bought that banknote or coin, I would be a happy little boy, eager to get home so I could show my mother his new purchase.
My father, who was never passionate about numismatics, soon gave up the hobby, and our Sunday trips to downtown Madrid came to an end. What my father really liked to do on Sundays was play mus with his friends over a glass of cold beer.
Although it’s not a large collection, the reader can probably guess that it holds great value for me. Moreover, these banknotes are part of Spain’s history, and I consider some of them to be true works of art.
Among these bills is one that, although badly worn, is very special. It is a 100-peseta bill issued in Burgos in 1938 by the Nationalist side. Madrid was in the Republican zone, and the currency of Franco’s Spain was issued in Burgos.
In addition to being mementos, this collection of bills also tells the story of Spain. Not just because of the bill issued in Burgos. This collection features religious figures, kings—including, of course, the Catholic Monarchs—art and literature, Andalusian women… in other words, the history of Spain as it was told over the course of forty years.

De las pesetas “democráticas” hay tan poca representación en esta colección que poco puedo decir de ellas. Estéticamente, son los que me menos me gustan.
Un detalle curioso es el que la mayoría de estos billetes conservan la leyenda: “Páguese al portador”. Una reminiscencia de que hubo un tiempo en el que los billetes de papel tenía su respaldo en metálico, en moneda. Moneda que a su vez estaba respaldada por las reservas de oro o plata del país. Unos tiempos en el que los que los bancos centrales no se inventaban el dinero.
There are so few “democratic” pesetas in this collection that I can say very little about them. Aesthetically, they are the ones I like the least.
A curious detail is that most of these banknotes retain the inscription: “Payable to the bearer.” A reminder that there was a time when paper banknotes were backed by metal, by coins. Coins that, in turn, were backed by the country’s gold or silver reserves. A time when central banks did not invent money.

Madre mía, la de recuerdos que me has traído con esta colección. Mi padre también pasó por una etapa de coleccionismo numismático y sigue conservando sus monedas y algunos billetes, pero se centró en más en las primeras. Yo también hice esas visitas dominicales acompañándole, en nuestro caso a la Plaza San Francisco, donde al igual que lo que describes, los vendedores colocaban sus tableros sujetos por caballetes y si llovía contaban con unos porches donde refugiarse.
Destacaré entre esta fantástica muestra:
En mi casa tenemos aún menos cosas de la Semana Santa. Otros años me acerco el Domingo de Ramos hasta la parroquia a coger la ramita de olivo, pero este año ni eso. Solamente disfrutamos de torrijas un par de días, compradas en el horno de pan que todavía subsiste en el barrio. Lo de los huevos o conejos de chocolate no lo he hecho nunca, ni monas ni ná de ná.

Buenas tardes Paloma. Qué casualidad con el tema de la numismática... Al repasar la publicación he visto que no subieron 4 billetes de peseta. Billetes que no conocí circulando, como la mayoria de la colección.
Como a tu padre, también me llaman más la atención las monedas, aunque de mi padre conservo muy pocas. Con el paso del tiempo se fue deshaciendo de muchas de ellas.
Me ha alegrado mucho que está publicación te haya traído tantos recuerdos. En mi vida infantil El Rastro y la Plaza Mayor estuvieron muy presentes.
De la Semana Santa... Mi madre sigue preparando unas estupendas torrijas. 🤩

We have arrived home (our Spanish home) less than an hour ago after a whole day trip but just as a little fact (more important and relevant than our arrival) is that for all these years of living here I have never seen these kind of banknotes, pesetas, as euros were already used here. La mayoría de tus billetes es la primera vez que los veo, aunque las figuras de algunos me recuerdan las de sellos de correos, de los que en Cumaná tengo dos álbumes con algo así como mil. Sin contar los del siempre presente Paco.
Domingos con mi padre; a él le gustaba visitar El Rastro y, por lo general, solo para pasear y mirar, aunque a veces compraba algo a los charlatanes o un perfume para mamá a un hindú que asegura fabricarlos y usaba un turbante muy colorido.
La bandeja de las torrijas es idéntica a una que hay en casa. Ahora me dieron ganas de comer torrijas, pero hacerlas me da pereza. La última vez que hicimos fueron como 200 y a penas llegaron al domingo de resurrección.
Pero el vecino juró que nunca se imaginó que un pan frito estuviera tan bueno.
Gratos recuerdo para cerrar el día. Hasta luego.
Buenos días mi estimado @felixmarranz, bellos recuerdos los que compartes. También recuerdo mis mañanas de Rastro siendo un niño muy chico. El Rastro ha cambiado mucho, para mí ha perdido bastante encanto... auque quizás sea la impresión de un señor ya mayor que mira el pasado con cierta nostalgia.
De la bandeja de torrijas... duraron poco, después llegaron las de vino y también duraron poco o menos.

I’d never seen any of those banknotes before, so it was a real treat for me… I remembered seeing plenty of them in my lifetime, but they were Argentine ones, given all the currency changes that took place over there, and I recalled that a pupil’s husband collected banknotes and coins – he even had them framed.
It’s a brilliant collection, but above all, what matters are the memories and those Sundays when you could get hold of them, the story about your father and your uncle. I think that matters a great deal. A beautiful collection!!! Good night!!

Tendría que mirar esas monedas... no se nada al respecto. En Argentina hubo una serie de monedas conmemorativas y yo tenía varias de ellas... tenía! Hace mucho tiempo... en otra vida jaja. Aunque no se de ese tema me encantó la colección, lo veo como arte.

Yo tampoco conozco mucho el mundo del coleccionismo de monedas, pero disfruto de algunos diseños y con dos excepciones...

I'm sorry I missed the chance to upvote this blog on time. Those wider banknotes have always been prettier to me, almost square-shaped. And I really like the tradition of making milk torrijas; it seems like something dairy-based is always the go-to for Easter. Where I'm from in Serbia, we have "miliprot" (from german milchbrot) - little pastries made with lots of milk and sugar, sometimes with dried fruit inside and they go perfectly with savory dishes like roast meat, prosciutto and cheese, and ofc boiled Easter eggs. <3
Here, no one ever arrives late—not even I, in replying to this post. The torrijas really are delicious; it’s strange that fried bread could turn out so good! I’m not a banknote collector myself, but I view them as little works of art—quite apart from the memories and pleasant feelings this small collection evokes for me.

I believe I have a some old Spanish money in my collection.
My 1765 Colonial Mexico 8 Reales that has been traded in China. I have a few more but I don't remember where I put it.
