In my last post, I shared the tradition of the Mursi tribe and extreme lip stretching culture that entails piercing the lips at a tender age of about fifteen (15) years old and wearing a large clay pot on it. The clay pot, to the women shows how valuable they are and how bountiful their bride price will be.

In this post, there is another culture that practice a similar extreme culture. The Kayan people are one of the subgroups of the Kareeni in Thailand and they are widely referred to as the "long neck people" or "giraffe women" because of the brass neck rings that their women are fond of wearing which makes their necks longer than usual.

In the Kayan tribes, the females are well known for wearing neck rings from the age of five (5) which is constantly replaced by a longer one as the girl grows. It is revealed that the weight of the brass rings sort of force the collar bone down and wedge the rib cage. In actual sense, the length of the neck doesn't increase, but the neck appears to be stretched as a result of the distortion of the collarbone (the bone between the shoulder and the neck.)

Just like the Mursi people, the Kayan people only remove the brass rings when they want to replace with a new one. Apart from that the process is a tedious one, so they take the time to remove it when they want to replace it. The brass rings have been removed by some women at one point or another for medical reasons. The muscles surrounding the coil becomes weak and it may be a cause of concern for some people. Also, the area where the rings are worn could sometimes get bruised and darkened.

Similar to the Mursi tribe, the Kayan people are said to wear these brass rings to make them less attractive to other people from other tribes, thereby reducing slave trade in their communities. It is also recorded that another reason women adore their necks with brass rings is for them to take up the resemblance of a dragon - a famous creature in the folklore of the Kayans. The Kayan women do not only wear brass rings on their necks but also as bracelets and anklets that gives them a dragon scale look.

On the part of the Kanyan women, they accept the fact there are some elements of truths in the aforementioned ideas about them but they also add that wearing of brass rings for them is a form of fashion related to their culture.

The government at some point didn't encourage their women to continue with the tradition of wearing brass rings that stretch their necks. Some women discontinued the tradition while some continued because it is a source of income for them. Tourists who visit their villages pay a fee to be able to see them.

Thank you for your time lovelies.
