The Mursi Tribe and Extreme Lip Stretching Culture

in Cross Culture2 years ago

Hey lovelies ❤️
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog 🤗

There are quite a number of cultures in the world that are somewhat strange to some of us but is highly embraced and encouraged among the tribes. I will be bringing you some of these cultures from time to time from today.

The Mursi are a group of people in South Sudan, Africa that are known for wearing large pottery, often reffered to as clay plates in their lower lips, especially by their women.

The wooden plates is significant in the culture of the Mursi people and it is a feature that makes them unique thereby attracting more foreigners to visit for the purpose of tourism. It is not something that is common in most countries and it will be intriguing to see as a foreigner.

The process begins when the girl is about fifteen (15) or sixteen (16) years of age. The lower lip will be cut open by her mother or by any other elderly woman in the community. Afterwards, a clay plug will be used to ensure it's kept open until the wound heals and this can take about two (2) to three (3) months.

The wooden plug are changed from time to time to larger sizes depending on the choice of the girl. It is believed among the Mursi people that the larger the plate, the more attractive and worthy a woman is for marriage. The size of the clay plate is used to determine the quantity and quality of the woman's bride price.

Originally, the Mursi women were said to use the clay plates to prevent being captured by slave traders from Arab who constantly raid their community. The clay plates is believed to make them look ugly and would make the slave traders lose interest in them.

Like I stated earlier, it is the choice of these young girls to decide whether or not they want to get their lips pierced. They are not compelled by their parents to do it, however, they are often influenced by peer pressure. It will be odd for all of your friends to have their lips pierced and you did not do yours. It would lead to low self-esteem and you may be left with no other choice than to undergo yours.

Thank you for your time lovelies.

I have seen this on national geography so many times but still feels different.
Culture is a beautiful thing but the story behind it is sometimes painful.

Culture and religion are somewhat related in terms of indoctrination. They have been convinced to see the practice as a norm and they do not complain about it despite the pain they go through for months.

Thank you ❤️

This is somewhat absurd to me because like going through such piercing pain for not just weeks but months. It's their tradition though and they are used to it so it's ok. I'd really love to see how they expand the lips in real life to that extent.

That's one crazy thing about culture. There are some things we do in our cultures too that will look ridiculous to other cultures in other countries or continents.

I'd really love to see how they expand the lips in real life to that extent.

It's a gradual process. They increase the size of the so called clay plates as they grow.

Jeez! That's interesting. Thanks for your response. !PIZZA
