This long-awaited day has come. A little more and the main holiday will come - New Year. Every family prepares for the New Year on this day. Each hostess prepares sweet and traditional dishes for their families. My family is no exception.
We started preparing for the New Year according to Slovak traditions, despite the fact that we are in Ukraine. First of all, we decorated the Christmas tree and made an Advent wreath with four candles a long time ago (four Sundays before Catholic Christmas). My family is not Catholic, but we respect and celebrate all Catholic holidays.
After the Christmas meeting, we began to prepare more actively for the New Year. In Slovakia, the New Year is celebrated but not as Christmas. Christmas is still more of a major holiday here. But in our family the traditions are unchanged. We started active training yesterday. We boiled potatoes, carrots and eggs with beets. All these vegetables will be needed for our traditional salads. This morning we started making salads. The first salad was "Olivier". This salad is made from boiled vegetables: potatoes, carrots and eggs. I also add canned green peas, pickles, fresh cucumber, boiled sausage or boiled chicken to the salad. I cut it all into small cubes, add mayonnaise and mix. The second salad is called "Shuba". This salad is very tasty. In this salads should be laid out in layers. The first layer I put grated and boiled potatoes. Then I spread sliced herring very tightly on the potatoes. I put carrots on the herring, then eggs, and on top I spread the last layer of grated beets. I smear all this with mayonnaise and decorate. The next traditional dish in our family is jelly. Jelly is prepared differently. For example, I cook jellies from several types of meat. Then I decompose this boiled meat in forms and fill with the broth in which it was cooked. This is a very tasty dish. Also traditionally on our table will be baked in the oven legs.
And an hour before the New Year, we will boil mashed potatoes. We will celebrate the New Year twice. The first time in Slovak time, and the second in Ukrainian. It's fun. And how do you celebrate the New Year ???
