Getting up there

GoPP6ffRXX21.JPG

I do it a lot and regularly - have rarely had a bad experience. In truth, any bad experience hasn't been all that bad at all, just maybe less good than other experiences I suppose.

I get paid to do it. I get paid a lot of money.

I do it for the enjoyment of it as well however, and I pay for it too, I've paid a lot of money for it over my lifetime, and I'll pay for it again...just like I did recently.

I did it again last weekend, not for work, for enjoyment, and yes I paid for it because my work only pays for work-related flights.

Yep that's right, I was in the air again and off to the city of Melbourne.

I saw my seven year old nephew @mrbonkers there as he'd flown in from where he lives, thousands of kilometres away, to compete in a national contest and I wanted to support him and generally just hang out with him because I see him so rarely (in person) due to the distance between where each of us lives.

I had a great time; he's a good little kid and slightly bonkers just like me and we always have fun. He did well in his contest too, I am very proud that he qualified for the national finals and it was so good to see him even if just for a short time.

I'll admit that I sometimes get a little tired of flying, I mean flying for work which happens a lot, but I generally like flying and intend to do a lot more until I can't do it anymore...like when I'm dead. When flying gives me the chance to see @mrbonkers though, it's even better.

Have you ever travelled a long way to to watch and support someone in their endeavours or to spend time with a niece or nephew? If you have, feel free to comment below.

All my life I have travelled. I fly 6-8 feet off the ground tho. Sadly it is not below the radar.

I prefer to fly under my radar but sometimes it's difficult.

I see you...you're that blip.

Post written. Awaiting ok for flight takeoff topic on runway W.E. zero tango delta.

Roger that..?

Ten years ago, I had one action.
Due to the impossibility of my brother, who moved to the UK with his family, to come visit his parents and bring his son (and my nephew) to his grandparents, we agreed that I should go and pick them up in Budapest. They did not have a direct flight from Edinburgh to Belgrade, and he could not drive his son and wife to London (from where there is a direct flight).
And so, they bought tickets for the Edinburgh-Budapest flight.
I arrived in Budapest one day earlier, made a short tour of the city and waited for them tomorrow when they landed.
We arrived in Belgrade late in the evening, we entered the house quietly, so as not to wake my parents, and when we got ready, I brought my nephew into the bedroom of my parents (his grandparents) and turned on the light.
The parents opened their eyes, they didn't understand why I turned on the light.
The expression on their faces when they saw their grandson, who told them "You are sleeping and I came to visit", was priceless.

For the love of our loved ones, we are ready for all kinds of journeys, flights, even if we had to fly to the moon or go down to the bottom of the ocean by submarine, we would accept it.

Sounds like a good deal, and would certainly have been a surprise for the grandparents.

Luckily my niece is not that far, it's at about 100km so we just go by car in the highway when we want to visit her and her family, with the excuse we have the kid of about the same age it's a good chance to make them play togheter while we chat and such... By plane we go to visit my in-law parents, they are on the opposite side of Italy so it's not a every month trip

Italy is so small so I guess it's pretty east to fly around the place there more often. For me to fly from home to where my nephew lives it's four hours in the air and with the carrier I prefer there's no direct flight so it's usually a six hour journey with a stop over. That's Australia though; big.

6 hours is tough, it's like from here to canaries or probably even more, but I reckon you do it with pleasure when it's the time

My wife and I just took a trip this past fall to watch our niece play softball down in Virginia. It was about a nine or ten hour drive down there. We were going to fly, but flight times and costs were ridiculous. We plan on heading back in the Spring to watch her play again. We will probably drive that trip as well.

Sounds good, but a long drive. I suppose if the time is available it's not so bad. Road trips can be enjoyable.

Yeah, we are going to go over spring break next year.

That's the way to do it, no point putting important stuff like this off until later...later may never come.

I traveled 16h by bus one way, every 4-5 weeks, to stay 7-10 days with my daughter. For 2 years. But that's a daughter, a little different. I don't have any nieces and nephews. The only other big travel I did was back to Germany, within 5 days, when my father had a stroke. To be there for the family, get things going, carry some of the weight.

I think it's partially because most of my friends are around me. I don't have any family here, and making Ecuadorian good wage is not enough to do many trips to Germany - where I don't have many friends left, either, most spread out over the country.

My brother does it, though. He regularly comes down here to spend time with his niece, my daughter. And me, probably. Same goes for my mom. It's easier that way, as I always need a permit from the mom to leave the country with Lily, and that can be challenging.

It's good your brother plays an active role in your daughter's life, I know people that wouldn't know their niece or nephew if they bumped into them.

Permit to leave the country with your own daughter. Ridiculous.

I have only flown once, and I have no nieces and nephews, but I have moved or gone from one place to another to accompany someone in those endeavours, my best friend, I have always been there at important times for her, both good and bad and it is rewarding, even when I have been there to accompany her as she cried over something bad that has happened.

I bet, when you fly, you put Richard Clayderman into your Walkman and rock on!

Right?

I'm sure I will, especially when I play a rock song on the piano, I don't miss that song!🤣

My friend is worse than me in that respect, she doesn't listen to a single song in English, only in Spanish!

You know, I heard Richard Clayderman was alive when the Wright brothers took the first ever flight in 1903.

My good, he's old! Besides, he's blond and I don't like blondes, I think I'll change my singer.😆

Maybe just add in some diversity.

Absolutely! It's been months, many months since I've listened to those songs.
