i have experienced similar growth on wood chip mulch, on different permaculture demonstration sites i have volunteered upon in the past. i never knew what it was ever ethier… and always assumed it was some strange form of fungus or mold. some recent re-search on the matter, now, leads me to believe that it is a form of “ Shotgun or artillery fungus (Sphaerobolus)”.
