Suddenly it feels like the future is here. Well, it is now 2020 and judging by any futuristic movie from way back when, and by all predictions... we do indeed already live in ... THE FUTURE! Therefore my vision of the future is my vision of today, and never has the time been more ripe for the great changes that are upon us. With the advancements in technology, and in particular what is to come in the next decade, the very nature of our existence and what we do to live and survive are changing rapidly. This paradigm shift has been catalysed today by coronavirus, with the kind of changes that were already on the cards now happening at warp speed.
The need for humans to perform most jobs is ending, and we are quickly being replaced with machines, robots, and AI. This means that most people will very soon change what they do with their lives very soon. We are right now choosing the path we take in the future. There are those who will remain in the cities and live a very confined and lonely existence, connected only by wires and wifi, and real deep interactions becoming increasingly rare. Then there are those who will live in rural areas, in a more decentralised and self sufficient way. It is easier than it has even been to get off-grid and still have the creature comforts that you are used to.
If we look at the state of cities today, it is clear that an exodus is imminent, and the flow of people into more rural areas has already started. Cities are not healthy, and are not safe in any sense of the word any more. Within 10 years the balance will shift, and my vision for the future is to see this happen with small communities that interact popping up around the world. These communities will connect with each other and co support one another. The reliance on State for any survival needs is very easily minimised to almost nothing when we live in this way. By decentralising our lives we simplify our lives, and open the door to abundance. Through sharing and helping one another we can shift our way of living from feeling vulnerable and dependant to real self sufficiency and co-support without the need for money. Things can be acquired by exchange, trade and gifts.. as well as by the use of technology like 3D printers to create many things that no longer need to be purchased. We will not need money for our survival needs!
How Do We Transition?
This is a silent exodus, slow, and graceful. There are no large groups doing this in a coordinated manner. This is a gradual movement, one by one, family by family, who each decide for themselves when enough is enough. No one will ever tell us to leave the cities, or to find another way. We will discover it for ourselves when the time is right. Maybe that will be when things have gotten too difficult to continue, or maybe when so many of our friends and loves ones have already taken the step that there is not much to stay for anymore.
Due to coronavirus we have now already made the cultural shift from office work to remote work in almost every sector of commerce. This step was a much needed shift in our culture, and has already changed the way we live our lives. Not going to an office or workplace, or having to commute daily is life changing and frees up a lot of time. The more time people have, the less reason they will have to live in cities. If there was one thing that people always loved to do when they have time, is to spend time in nature.. whether that be the beach or the mountains.. and to enjoy the moment.
The value we have on certain skills is about to shift dramatically. It will be those jobs that cannot be performed by robots that will be the most valued. This opens the doors to the creative arts like never before. I believe we will see a shift in our appreciation of those artistic and creative people, who are rare and needed more than ever before.
The steps to take depend on each individual, but the one step that everyone will have to make is to make the decisions to change. That is the single most important step, to commit to living in a better and more humane way again. Choosing to come back to our roots, to honour our ancestors and our history. Allowing our spirituality to merge with our science, with neither being exclusive. The only way is out, are you ready to jump yet?
I believe that we are at the very start of this process, and that within 5 years we will not recognise our world or our culture as we see it today. Once our economies crash, and the system simply breaks, we will start to see the real new birth of our global decentralised future. Capitalism and centralisation have grown as big as they can get. If it gets any bigger it will destroy the world, and therefore it is time that it is destroyed instead. Its time has come, it has brought us to where we are today, living on the cusp of a great new world.
We have come a very very long way in the last 50 years. It is only when we really look back that we can see it.. so imagine what can happen in the next 50?!

Awesome post, man! I too see a great exodus to the countryside in coming years, it's already happening. I don't think that cities will empty out, but urban population will surely decrease noticeably. We need that a species.
