Pastimes of Bhagavat vol 2 – King Prithu’s rise from wicked Vena’s demise part 4/6

Chapter four of an ancient legend – The new king’s first decision is to ban all religion

Our tale of ancient times continues, dear reader, with the king having walked away from his kingdom and left it for good. The ministers and citizens searched the kingdom for him but could find no trace. After some time there was a great gathering in the capital city, and it became clear that the old king was no more and that something needed to be done to continue the administration of the kingdom.

The learned sages and ministers were deeply concerned for the welfare of the people, for with the absence of a king, there was no more proper protection for them and they started losing the harmony and balance that previously existed in society as a whole. Meeting with the queen, whose name was Sunita, a conference was held to determine the best course of action. Despite the reluctance of the ministers who were against it, the king’s cruel son Vena was installed on the throne as the next monarch.

The good news is that this immediately frightened all the thieves in the kingdom who became afraid, being aware of the new king’s reputation for cruelty. They all ran like rats who hide from a snake when it appears in the house. Thus the new king Vena ascended the throne and acquired all the opulences of his father and the royal court. The bad news is that he then proceeded to become proud due to false prestige and considered himself greater than anyone else around, even insulting the truly great personalities that did exist in this once pious kingdom.

In his hubris, intoxicated with pride and position, the new king Vena would mount his chariot and travel the face of his kingdom like an uncontrolled elephant, causing the earth and even the sky to tremble wherever he went. He enacted new decrees, without consultation, forbidding the brahmana priests from performing any ceremonies or sacrifices to the demigods. He stopped the giving of charity, the offering of ghee or clarified butter into the ceremonial fires and basically ended all religion.

The same thing happens in our modern era, where new godless leaders rise to power and destroy the previous cultural activities of their citizenry, abolishing overnight what was once a much loved and respected activity that was going on for hundreds or even thousands of years. In this way evil men destroy the pillars of society in the name of a cultural revolution, thus hollowing out the rich and inspiring culture of their entire population.

Assembling together to discuss this, the wise sages concluded, on observing the atrocities of the new wicked king, that a great danger was about to approach the people of the world, and out of compassion they wished to do something about it. The ancient Purana describes how when a log is burning on both ends, the ants in the middle are in great danger. Similarly the people were in great danger due to the irresponsible king on one side and thieves on the other.

In today’s far more degraded civilization we see that both the ruler and the thieves now inhabit the same ruling political party. The head of state will set the example by allowing the state to be captured by greedy businessmen. He will line his own pockets and fleece the public coffers for his own personal gain, thus encouraging his ministers, administrators and entire bureaucratic government of civil servants to loot and pillage in their own way from the top to the bottom of the civil service structures.

State owned enterprises that are meant to keep the lights on and power the economy and utilities will fall into disrepair as vast sums of wealth meant to maintain them are looted for years on end. As a result the masses of people, who are the most vulnerable in society and normally meant to be protected by the ruling party, will fall into severe difficulty and still worse poverty than ever before. I see this right here in my own country of South Africa today, as I write this, where the national power supplier has to have daily blackouts for two to five hours because the electricity grid can no longer be maintained.

The national airlines has gone totally bankrupt. The municipalities of multiple towns have been looted and gone bankrupt and need to be placed under “administration” by the national executive, who themselves are the biggest looters to begin with. Water, roads, schools, hospitals and sanitation services have collapsed into disrepair throughout my country where poverty and unemployment wreaks havoc among the entire citizenry, especially the youth.

This is all the result of a leadership that has sold out to some hidden hand behind the scenes, a globalist cabal that funds them and allows them to greedily loot and skim the public coffers, enriching their families and cronies, while millions of people are deprived of basic needs. This is truly a hellish existence right here and now for the vast majority of the human population on the face of the earth.

This heartless brutality, based on lack of political will or proper advisory, is not a new thing. King Vena was installed on the throne due to a political crisis millennia ago already, as our ancient tale describes. Unlike today, where it appears that we are too far gone, at least in those times something could be done about it, as we shall see in the coming chapters of our epic tale, so stay tuned for the next episode.
