We came across these fun guys in the woods in Seoul, South Korea. And I really don't know their names.
We have two choses:
Go to google image search through right click and search similar images.
Make up our own name.
Let's leave number one for later and make up our own name for now.
We can't just call it umbrella mushroom. Half the mushrooms look like umbrellas. Consider some questions before giving it a name:
What color is it?
What structure does it have?
What do you notice about its growth patterns?
Does it grow in circles or in rows?
What environment does it grow in?
What month does it grow in?
Do we want to make a latin name or not?
Now we are ready for one more fun guy and this one is a little easier. Consider the color and structure this fun guy.
What is it feeding off?
What does it resemble to you?
What do you see next to it?
I think this kind of forest mystery can be used in science taxonomy lessons as well as English language lessons. It gives students the opportunity to think instead of running to google first.
There is no reason science and writing skills should kill creativity. Every moment of our life should be questions and discovery.
