I worked so hard, and then it was destroyed... not completely, but still. My efforts were thwarted, and the project was compromised. I'm not even completely sure how to move forward from here... Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

STOPWith the right kind of mortar, this shouldn't be much of a problem. If you lay tiles on a concrete floor, the surface is bald as well (on the tiles and the floor) and it sticks like hell.
What you probably should take in concideration is the weight of the whole thing. I was thinking that from the beginning, but I hope you planed for that issue. Your house is something like a large trailer, isn't it? So I hope it can support the weight if such a stove. Depending on what you have planned - a stone stove, a cast iron stove ect. - the whole job can get pretty heavy. Including the stone slabs perhaps a ton or more. In a very small area of the floor, so lets hope this doesn't bend or something.
You know, I have been thinking that before: you need a proper house. Preferably one made of stone or bricks or so, not the american cardboard box type. Something that that lasts for life, and for the life time of your children too, if they want.
Sure, it means to commit to stay there, but it gives you more security and options.
