Papaya planting

Hi everyone!

Abundance is definitely a word I would associate with papaya trees. So many kilos of large, delicious fruit every year, each fruit giving us back hundreds of easily germinated seed. It is truly marvellous!

Today I am planting baby papaya trees. Papayas can be male, female or asexual so it is important to plant in groups of at least four to make sure you get a female fruit producer amongst them.

The germination rate is always extremely good and literally hundreds of seeds are popping up in this tray I have planted. After I was through planting these biggest seedlings out I sprinkled a layer of earth over the many many seeds I disturbed just below the surface about to take root.

There will easily be enough again in a few weeks to do the same process as I have done here. Papayas are wonderful fruit producers and put out fruit in the first year of growing so a nice instant return for the work too. Also they can be eaten in the green un ripe state or ripe yellow state.

They are extremely nutritious and delicious and no garden should be without them! If you don't grow them already, next time you buy one scoop all those seeds into a bowl rather than throwing them and get germinating! They are a very satisfying and productive tree to grow and an absolute must for a permaculture food forest.

Thanks for reading.
