"Good job, internet: You bullied NFTs out of mainstream games"

This is from an article on PC gamer, as this is something that has been echoing around for years, and I’ve always wanted to make a video about it.

I spent more time on this video than any other video I've done to date, I hope you'll watch it and find it interesting!

There are SO MANY articles out there lambasting the use of NFTs though, I feel like I'm gonna catch a lot of heat for this video.

What is an NFT?

MonkeyPics.png

NFTs are not a picture of a monkey. They are not JPEGS, and they aren’t just scams.

NFTs, just like the internet, are a technology, and they can be used for good and for some truly terrible things. The internet is still responsible for far more scams on a daily basis than anyone can imagine (Kitboga is my favorite streamer, I watch him religiously), but it also holds trillions of years worth of collective human knowledge.

An NFT is just the ability to prove you own a digital file. That’s it.

It could be art, it could be a game asset, it could be music, a game itself could be an NFT.

Remember back in the day when we bought physical games and then when we were done with them we could trade them for money? Or even sell them online?

That’s because we had OWNERSHIP of our purchases.

NFTs are KILLING THE WORLD!

The most interesting thing I researched while doing this video was the use of energy for gaming, both blockchain and otherwise.

It's interesting that it's a bit of a "whataboutism" to compare blockchain gaming to anything else, but if you don't, what does it even mean that it uses "a lot of energy"?

Honestly, if you're sitting around watching YouTube and playing games, I don't wanna hear about how ETH is using too much energy. Everything is a waste of energy to someone.

ETH now uses 99.98% less energy than PoW ETH, there's no more argument to be made here. Not sure if the mainstream will want to hear this though...

Conclusions

The use of decentralized technologies in the gaming industry has the potential to revolutionize the way we play and interact with games. On the other hand, web3 gaming is still in its infancy, and there are a lot of kinks to work out. The user experience is pretty much the worst thing imaginable right now, and it also has to overcome the stigma that so many scams and internet celebrities have given NFTs.

What do you guys think? Will the uninformed internet continue to bully mainstream games? Will NFTs overcome the major hurdles they have in front of them?

I look forward to a future where I actually own the things I buy.

My favorite quote from that article is the following one:

Do I want to make money by playing videogames? The thought makes me want to turn off my monitor forever, ...

It's funny because as a writer for PC Gamer he already gets paid to play games and write about them.

Anyway, probably it's not the worst thing that big gaming companies are putting their NFT plans on hold for now. As most of the novel things in gaming usually develop outside of AAA games.

LOL that is hilarious, he complains about not wanting to get paid for playing games while getting paid to play games 😂😂😂😂😂

Good catch!

Agreed, I think AAA putting things on hold while the space matures is probably for the best.

Although now would be a great time to build to be in a good position for the next bull run. But luckily there are other companies out there doing exactly that.

Thank you for this video! It boggles the mind how people can dump hundreds of dollars into cosmetics or gacha boxes, own nothing after that, and at the same time call NFTs "da debul!"

I am glad you acknowledged the myriad problems facing the tech. No one glossing over them could have any credibility, but growing pains are not a reason to throw it all away.

The strongest negative at the moment (and you mentioned it) is that NFTs are currently being used to turn gamers into investors. I can see why the majority of gamers are turned off by that (I don't even like pre-sales!). The space will mature and have full-featured games to play enhanced by NFTs. Then the investor role would be completely optional (and likely regulated in the US and other markets).

Companies will avoid the word 'NFT' due to its bad reputation but I think they are still going to make strides to implement them into a service. Regal cinema/theaters gives out 'Digital Collectibles' for ticket purchases on their app that can then be transferred on the polygon blockchain. Hot Wheels are selling NFTs of their vehicles on the WAX blockchain and will send a physical die cast toy to an address if an NFT holder redeems their asset.

It's all still early but once the general population realizes and understands, it will be more common as a reward structure. I think vIRL NFTs will be a solid foundation to garner trust and support in the 'NFT' System.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the matter. Anything can happen with this new system and hopefully its for the better!

I think exactly the same. NFT's will be rebranded by big industry just like the word "Crypto"

You're absolutely right and the MSM only cherry picks what benefits them. I know you've been around the crypto gaming space for years and I have as well... So we KNOW and have experienced the true benefits of blockchain gaming compared to non-crypto games. I cry inside when I see people waste so much time playing all of these games and even invest money into these games only to earn or own nothing in return! 🤦‍♂️

I think NFTs will eventually overcome the hurdle that the MSM has placed on them. It's just a heavy misconception that needs to be cleared out with solid use cases for NFTs that don't easily flicker away with a market downturn.

Great post. What do you think about blockchain integration into existing games? You said some games would benefit from including NFTs, just wondering which ones you had in mind?

Fortnite-like games with skins, Hearthstone-like games with cards. I think those are the obvious easy ones. I think any MMO or fantasy type games could use them too, like my example of earning a skin (cool sword) for winning a game like Dark Souls.
