Holidaying in the UK

HOLIDAY PHOTOGRAPHY

This post contains all my own photography, shot on my iPhoneX, in an artistic way to highlight our experiences

I’ve had a blast with my family, being away to a Butlins resort in the UK (Skegness!)

This is actually my old bucket set that we took to the beach. It much be 30 years old but it still has a smile. Glad I can pass it on to my kids to enjoy :)

We luckily picked THE best week of weather we have seen in a long while.

Beautiful sunshine - lots of outdoor attractions - perfect.

For those not familiar with Butlins; it’s a cheap and cheerful seaside holiday resort, with three (I think) locations in the UK.

This is a statue of Billy The Bear. Kids love him.

They provide everything you need in one place; that being accommodation, food, staged entertainment, seaside, funfair, arcades, outdoor and indoor activities - generally designed for families and to keep the kids busy and happy.

All started by Billy Butlin in 1936, an entrepreneur who changed the face of British seaside holidays.

Like I say, it’s a cheap holiday - no frills here, just good general standards and all that you need to have fun.

It’s our first holiday in 18 months, and they dealt with social distancing stuff really easily. Not much had changed to be honest, from our previous visits - just mask wearing, pre-booking some activities, limited space in venues and using the track/trace app upon entering buildings. The rest was brilliant!

These outdoor changing booths by the fountain as were really photogenic

It’s a law of nature that if you put a kid hear a fountain, they will dance around in

Queues for the ice cream we’re long

We did well in the arcades

The gulls were out in force, taking any scraps they could

I really like this shot, it reminds me of an album cover or something. Anyway, the kids loved the swing ride for obvious reasons

We had the best holiday and we’re so very lucky with the weather.

The morning we left was the only day it clouded over and rained. We left just in time. Until the next holiday, we got our fair share of sun, and we said a sad goodbye to a drizzly resort that out a smile back our faces.

Ah, memories! We went there in 2007 for our honeymoon combined with my youngest's 4th birthday. I don't know if she remembers much of it, though. Her big sister probably has more memories.

The room stank of cigarette smoke, because the adjoining room had smokers in it and it seeped under the door. Other than that we had a lovely time. I think smoking regulations have changed again since then.

Ah wow, what an occasion!
We were there last week over our 9th wedding anniversary - it was a total coincidence though 😆
(We forgot about the anniversary completely and just focussed
on family fun!)

Yes there are signs in the accommodation in every room staying NO SMOKING. Thankfully.
That sounds pretty awful to have to put up with that.
Also our accommodation smelt a bit off too, like bad drains from the bathroom. But same here, other than that it was a brilliant break away!

I guess, being the destination it is, the turnover and the price you pay, its going to be hard for them to keep things perfect in the accommodation, but they don't do bad considering. We went to lesser known one once and it was disgusting. We ended up getting the cleaner back in on arrival and half of the attraction things weren't running or were only half supplied. It wasn't the best weather either, so not lots to do offsite.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

First trip in 18 months and you got good weather the entire time - that's awesome! Luck was in your favor. Looks like a nice resort and a lot of fun. Great photos. I bet it felt pretty nostalgic bringing out your old sand bucket.

Yeah we couldn’t have planned it any better 😁
It was really sweet to see them playing with the set.

I'm sure I went to Skegness Butlins when I was a kid. I expect it's changed a bit since then. Definitely no big water slide back then. I wonder if these places will have a revival if more people decide to holiday in this country.

!BEER

I expect there will be a resurgence in UK holidays.
It’s a great package that we got - kind of amazing really. We paid £475 (that includes cash back we got over Covid for when the holiday was cancelled but they kept our money/booking so they rewarded us £50 back) for 4 nights on site with breakfast/dinner for 4 people. That includes shows, free funfair, animals etc etc too.

And when the weather was that good it’s even better.

Sounds great and not too far to travel. I think kids are happy as long as there is lots of fun stuff to do even if the weather is not scorching. My kids are grown up now and can do their own thing.

Hey @ashtv, here is a little bit of BEER from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!

Smile on a bucket from 30 years ago still there. Smile on a blank bucket from Amazon from 3 years ago.... wait, there used to be a smile on it?

Well put!

I went to the Filey one as a kid (next to Skegness). I heard it's gone now, or has it? Some Urbex perhaps... 😮

I thought you once did an Urbex of the old Butlins site?

(After Butlins it was called the Primrose Valley Holiday camp.. not sure if it’s still there.)

These sites are incredibly big. Can’t possibly imagine the value of the land!

Thanks @steevc! 🍻

Classic! Glad you got the weather!

100%! Classic holiday indeed 😀

We’ve been one year where it was torrential rain for 4 days. So we’ve paid our dues 😆

Glad to see you had the best holiday with your family 😊

Its fascinating how long the bucket set has lasted. I doubt if there are still such being made which much quality that will last that long.

They certainly built them to last!

We don’t like to throw away perfectly good items either. Greta to be able to see my own kids enjoy them
