Today's teaching in the live coverage by Bro Eli Soriano was really great. Certain practices i do wrongly unknowing i got to know exactly how it should be through this teaching.
Today's teaching was centered on prayers and how to pray.
Some of the things I learnt from the teachings are as follows;
- God does not take pleasure in vain repetition of words in one instant ,when we pray. It is forbidden by Christ in that manner. Infact, the bible make us understand that even before we ask, God already know what we want to ask of HIM.
- Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
- When praying, our hearts should not be in a haste and our words should be few. When we come before,we be calm before and then present our request to him. It is not by much words that our prayers are being heard, but the quality of the time we have with Him in His presence
- Ecclesiastes 5:2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
When we pray ,we should make relevant request to God. Bro Eli gave an illustration ; that in a situation when there is an earth quake attack and one praying saying " Our father, who is in heaven, hallow be your name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done ,as it is in heaven ,give us this day our daily bread. It is a good prayer but for the wrong situation. We can be asking for daily bread in time of earth quake. It is a wrong prayer. Or citing the catholic prayer,it would be wrong for this situation.
We should not pray just to show off. We don't to men, so our goal should not be for them to see or hear us . when we pray like this ,God would not answer our prayer because the motive is wrong,; this is way of the Hypocrites. They pray in open places for their voices to be heard.
*Matthew 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.We should learn to pray in our closet. God that sees in the secret said He would reward us openly. Meaning, He would answer us when we pray in this manner.
*Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.The early christains pray kneeling down. Kneeling down is an act of humility before God and it is very pleasant before God. Jesus, knelt down down to pray in Gethsemene, so we have to equally learn to emulate the early christain in this too. When we pray with the family,we should learn to kneel down before God and pray.
It is also not prohibited to stand and pray but it should not to show off as the hypocrites do
Mark 11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
Acts 20:36 And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all. 20:36
- To knee down and pray ,means to fold the knees and be in an horizontal posture with the head touching the ground and not being vertically as some do practice. Bible teaches us to fold our knees, be in horizontal position with our face reaching the ground.
*Matthew 26:39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
*Psalms 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
- It is also wrong for men to cover their hair while praying. Men ought not to cover their hair while praying, but the woman should.
- 1 Corinthians 11:4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
