The faith of the thief on the cross is commendable. He was able to understand the background of what we are about to study here today.

Isaiah 64:6 (NIV)

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

He understands that he was nothing but a sinner and Jesus was righteous. Man tries to equate their own righteousness to the righteousness of God and they are clearly not the same. Acknowledging our unrighteousness is the right step of faith for us to accept the righteousness of God.

Romans 10:3 (NIV)

Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.

Our response should be that of accountability. Knowing we are wrong in our ways and we are sinners. We should know our failing states and imbibe the true nature of God.

Romans 3:10-12

As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one;
there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.
All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

Seeking after God shows we are seeking after the righteousness of God and that was what the thief on the cross did. He knew he was responsible for his own fate and his act of faith in the righteousness of God in Jesus allowed him to reign with Jesus that same day in Paradise as Jesus promised.

Reference scripture:
Like 23:42-43 (NIV)
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
