Blooming cactus - Mediolobivia atrovirens

Patience my dears... you will need tons of it when you decide to grow cacti from small cuttings or even worse - from seeds.
It is not a plant that you plant and will bloom in the same year and then every year, cause that what is expected of them. They can be fussy, will slow down if its too hot, too cold, they were moved to new place or new pot.

But it is worth it if you enjoy those prickly friends and their extremely colorful blooms.
(Plus you have a whole winter off as they just go dormant and don't do anything.)

I have this one since 2018. The very tiny green cutting spent the first year growing roots and adjusting to new place.
The next year wasn't much different. But it was alive and growing.

It only bloomed for me for the first time last year with two flowers if I remember correctly. It grew a bit again, but it is still a very small cactus and it will stay like that.

This year it has another little offshoot that maybe will bloom as well next year, and a total of 5 flowers.
We have progress :)

Mediolobivia atrovirens also called Rebutia atrovirens is native to Bolivia and Argentina and can be found on 3000-4000 m above the sea level. It grows on rocks often hiding between some gasses. And here is a good advise I actually took from fellow orchid growers - knowing where the plant comes from and what are it's natural habitat is the key to successful growing. Only the info above tells me that it like to have dappled sun (growing on grass) and very fast, rocky substrate to grow. It can also withstand lower temperatures and big temperature differences between day and night (the elevation it grows on).
Info from my last years post, where you can see the plant and compare

Those are the first two flowers that opened, there are 3 more buds to go.

The blooms are amazing! Huge comparing to the size of the cactus. When fully open they are almost flat. That, plus the rounded petals made me wanna have more of this type.
Big cacti are overrated. Get the small ones with ballsy blooms! :D

The camera tends to eat the colours on this one. The flowers are a bit darker and more red. The photo below is the closest to the real tone.
Absolutely stunning!
