πŸ’šπŸ’›β€οΈ Rastafari Craft Day 🎨 With The @KidSisters πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ¨

I sat down with the @KidSisters this morning to help them make their own Rastafari necklaces with Tewahedo pendants πŸ“ΏπŸ‘©β€πŸŽ¨.

β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ’š TEACH THE YOUTHS πŸ’šπŸ’›β€οΈ

Β  Β  Β @Sreypov and I have been together for nearly 5 years, and the whole family has learned a little about my personal Rastafari livity through the years, but I've never pushed any of it on them.

Β  Β  Β One of the lessons I've taught them is why I don't buy or wear gold/silver/precious stone jewelry. I feel if you truly love your Queen, the last thing you would do is adorn her with things that people kill each other for.

Β  Β  Β This has never been something in disagreement within our family, and there is honestly no place for gold or diamonds within our humble lives.

Β  Β  Β On the other hand, I can't say the family has ever showed much interest in my Rastafari jewelry, if that's what you can call it. The family has always considered wooden beads to not be an attractive form of jewelry, but recently there's been a change of heart.

Β  Β  Β I'm not sure if it comes from the general respect the public of Suriname shows the family and I when we are on the streets, but recently the @KidSisters have showed some interest in creating their own wooden bead necklaces complete with some Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo crosses.

πŸ–ŒοΈ CRAFT TIME βœ‚οΈ

Β  Β  Β I bought three identical pendants like the one below many years ago. They were handcrafted in Ethiopia, and although not expensive, they have a lot of personal value to me.

STEP 1

Β  Β  Β First I gathered up several wooden beads of various sizes that I've had for several years, paint, the pendants, a small paintbrush and some wooden skewers to hold the beads for painting.

STEP 2

Β  Β  Β Monkey-B and SreyYuu cut a piece of fishing line, put their pendants on, then began making a symmetrical design with the beads provided.

STEP 3

Β  Β  Β The girls kept testing and re-testing different styles, lengths, and bead combinations until discovering the perfect necklace.

STEP 4

Β  Β  Β After mapping out their necklaces, the @KidSisters then removed thee string from their necklaces and set aside certain bead for painting>

Β  Β  Β They sandwiched the beads between two skewers and began painting thin coats of red, yellow and green.

STEP 5

Β  Β  Β Monkey-B put the beads out in the sun to dry quickly.

Β  Β  Β When the beads were dry the girls took them back to apply more coats of paint.

STEP 6

Β  Β  Β Smart Dads remember to have their artisans suit up before painting so they don't ruin those brand new clothes.

Β  Β  Β The girls continued to paint and dry the beads, about 7 to 9 coats of paint in total.

STEP 7

Β  Β  Β With the beads painted, the @KidSisters reassembled their necklaces and tied off the clasps, project complete.

Β  Β  Β Monkey-B didn't hold up too well, so she was asleep before she could fully finish her necklace, but SreyYuu soldiered through.

Β  Β  Β Pretty awesome style for her first Ital artwork. I think SreyYuu really enjoys making all types of art, but at the moment we're financially limited, so we keep it simple.

Β  Β  Β I think we have a happy young Italist. SreyYuu is quickly becoming a skilled Ital chef too, and now she has the necklace of an Italist to boot.

Β  Β  Β When she wears her necklace in public, she may be surprised when she hears an occasional "blessed love" from passersby.

That's a very good looking necklace. She did a fine job, I would never say that was her first attempt. πŸ€—

It's nice your wife agrees with you on that. It means you're on the same page. πŸ˜‰

The girls have strung the beads several times, but always used to quit before finishing. This time they saw it through to the end.

I am indeed a lucky man to have such a wonderful family.

That is some fine father/daughter craft time :) MonkeyB couldn't fight off the afternoon sleep monster haha. Really a lovely necklace with deep meaning. Good to give the youth direction and skills. I could see them making necklaces and selling them as a business somewhere down the road as well. Multi-skilled... You two are doing a fantastic job raising those girls in a conscious manner!

Thanks @chrisinphuket.

SreyYuu will have to get over a certain amount of shyness, but she certainly has the skillset.

Yeh, sell for HIVE. ;) They know what the colors represent, so now up to the youths if they want to don those colors in public or not.

Amazing young artists! They designed and made their own necklaces!! Wonderful! They are incredible little girls. Impressive!

Thanks @kaminchan. Yes, let's say 90% independent. I simply made sure they didn't create a big mess, and also they necklaces weren't too long or short.

Great father , daughter team work and very impressive first necklace great job girls πŸ‘

Thanks for the support @kohsamui99. Luckily this project went smoothly and nobody made any death threats. Things can change quickly with young children, but this project was a success.
