When you are in Getaria, Guipuzcoa, there are three things you cannot miss: drink their Txacolí P.D.O. Getaria wine, eat its famous fresh fire-grilled fish and walk through the San Anton mountain, commonly known as "El Ratón" (the mouse).

On this mountain you can visit both the Getaria lighthouse and the San Anton watchtower and enjoy beautiful views always surrounded by beautiful nature.

This famous lighthouse dating from 1862 consists of a 21-meter tower located 93 meters above sea level. Attached to this tower is the pavilion that serves as the residence of the lighthouse keeper.

These two tourist buildings on Mount San Anton are located within a circular route of about 2 kilometers, suitable both for children and adults.

The paths of the route are well signposted and mostly paved.

The watchtower is only a 10-minute walk from the lighthouse and, just like from the lighthouse, you will enjoy wonderful views as well as a fresh sea breeze caressing your face.

This is one of the main watchtowers in the whole Basque Country, being able to see from here the entire Basque coast stretched out between capes Higer and Matxitxako.

Also the mouths of all the ports of Gipuzkoa are observed, as well as those located in the eastern third of Bizkaia.

Given that Getaria has been and is, fundamentally, a fishing town that was also famous for being a whaler, these watchtowers were used to scan the seas and spot the whales in order to hunt them.

It was also used to warn fishing boats of the arrival of pirates so they could take refuge in port and avoid boarding.

Without a doubt, the whole Getaria and this small tour cannot be missing from your list of "What to do and visit in the Basque Country".
