Another day in paradise - the south Cape coast of Africa

in TravelFeed3 years ago

A day in paradise has no time constraints. Every day is a holiday. Here on the south Cape coast of Africa you will find the crown gem called the Garden Route. Travelers from all over the world make their way here in season over December to March. The beaches are great for water sports like surfing. And then there's the wildlife.

Here's a photo I took of sunrise a little while back. The bay down below is a breeding ground for whales every year in winter.

If you want to see the big five, as they are called here, then this is a good place to start - the Garden Route along the south coast of Africa. Here you can see not only lions, elephant, and buffalo (wildebeest), but you can also see a sixth wonder of the animal world, namely the Southern Right whale. I have glimpsed them on occasion in the sea, playing or nursing their newly born calves.

It's a magnificent feeling to be so close to the biggest mammal in the world. Other than that, I regularly see schools of dolphins swimming by in such a long line, that it looks as if they are never ending. They either move in a very long thin line past the coast, or they circle back, or there are masses of them. I can sit for many minutes on end just watching them jump out of the water briefly as they pass by on their way east or west.

Here's another view of the same bay during the daylight hours, with the indigenous succulent plant life of the region.

I spend every other day hiking about the rugged cliffs that run along the wild coastline. It's possible to climb down to the rocky shore and bathe in some beautiful tranquil rock pools of crystal clear warm Indian Ocean water. You may even see a friendly looking seal playing nearby. I'm sure there are numerous coastal hotspots around the world. I have spent a month touring the coast of Thailand a few years ago, and it is beautiful. Here is different of course, but just as appealing to the intrepid traveler and adventurer.

When you get the chance, do make a point of coming to sunny South Africa to explore the stunning beaches and coastline. And look for the Garden Route specifically. The beaches are world class.

This is a photo of winter in South Africa on the south Cape coast, but it could be any day of the year, it is so pleasant and mild.

Having been born and raised at the coast in Cape Town, I am used to a high standard of beaches, and this Garden Route region really tops the list of blue flag beaches for sure. Surfing and whale watching are just the tip of the iceberg.

Nowadays we may have to wait a bit until travel opens up once more of course, but I would start making plans already to explore the exquisite southern coast of Africa. There are remote rocky parts of the shoreline that go on for miles, where you don't see anyone. You can hike along and maybe even cross a river if you need to, with the entire place to yourself. It really is a huge country with relatively few people.

As a result there is so much wide open space and fresh air, with small towns dotted along the coast. And the currency exchange rate is favorable for international travelers from anywhere in the world. Tourism is a big part of the economy of the Cape, and astute travelers have been coming here for years. I hope you get the chance to visit too.
